Al Sadd beat Al Duhail on 3-2 on penalties after 2-2 draw to lift Qatar Cup
DOHA: Al Sadd claimed their fourth Qatar Cup title, their second trophy of the season following the Qatar Stars League triumph, as they beat arch-rivals Al Duhail 3-2 in a nervy penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw in regulation time at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium on Saturday.
President of Qatar Olympic Committee HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani awarded Al Sadd captain Hassan Al Haydos the trophy.
Sheikh Joaan also honoured the winners and runners-up in presence of President of Qatar Football Association Jassim bin Rashid Al Buainain, and CEO of Qatar Stars LeagueHani Ballan.
Goalkeeper Meshaal Barsham was the hero for Al Sadd as he saved two successive penalty kicks diving first to his left and then to his right.
While Hassan Al Haydos, Akram Afif, Rafa Mujica, and Claudinho scored for Al Sadd, Pedro Miguel missed. For Al Duhail, Almoez Ali, Edmilson Jr., and Benjamin Bourigeaud were on target but Michael Olunga and Karim Boudiaf erred.
Al Duhail made an aggressive start to the match but Al Sadd held fort despite some anxious moments in the opening half. Barsham was instrumental in making a good save here as well.
The Red Knights fetched lead in the 49th minute when Olunga headed home a corner kick.
Al Sadd hit back in the 63rd minute after Miguel brought down during a corner kick and the referee ruled a penalty. The spot kick was converted by Claudinho 1-1.
Al Duhail, however, regained lead three minutes later - opening the attack from the right flank and Benjamin Bourigeaud connected a Bassem Al Rawi cross from in front of the goal while being in line of the defence (2-1).
Al Sadd pulled level again (in the 86th minute) as Rafa Mujica leapt high to make a fine header off a Claudinho lob from the left. 2-2.
The two extra-time halves failed to break the deadlock and The Wolves eventually prevailed in the shootout on their home turf.
The victory left both the Al Sadd players and fans elated and they celebrated before and after the prize presentation.
This is Al Sadd's fourth Qatar Cup triumph after winning it in 2017, 2020 and 2021.

Tribune News Network Doha The Qatar national 3x3 basketball team achieved a significant milestone in the FIBA world rankings rising to 18th place with a total of 1,131,976 points, moving up from 23rd and surpassing teams such as Poland, New Zealand, Canada, the Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, the Philippines, and Australia. Meanwhile, the QatarU-23 3x3 national team has made a remarkable leap of 19 places to secure the fifth position in the world with 832,921 points, outpacing established teams like China, Japan, Latvia, Algeria, the Netherlands, and Italy, thus achieving its highest ranking to date, previously being ranked 24th. The impressive progress is indicative of the extensive efforts being made by the Qatari sports system, particularly by the Qatar Basketball Federation. This advancement is a direct result of the strong performances exhibited by both teams in various international tournaments, which have played a crucial role in elevating their global standings and solidifying their status among the elite teams worldwide. Al Annabi arrive in Tashkent for next Asian Qualifiers clash vs Uzbekistan
The Qatar national football team arrived in Tashkent for their next FIFA World Cup 2026 AFC Asian Qualifiers Group A match against Uzbekistan, to be played on Tuesday. Al Annabi's Spanish coach Luiz Lopetegui has called up Nabil Erfan of Al Wakrah and Mohammed Ayash of Al Duhail to the squad that will face Uzbekistan. Qatar have already qualified for the playoff stage having defeated Iran 1-0 in their last match at home. Qatar have 13 points with four wins. Iran top the group with 20 points, followed by Uzbekistan (18), the UAE (14), Qatar (13), Kyrgyzstan (7), and North Korea (3). Iran and Uzbekistan have both secured automatic qualification to FIFA World Cup 2026. As many as 18 teams have qualified for the current stage that was divided into three groups, each containing six teams competing in a split league system of two home and away stages. The first and second-placed teams from each group qualify directly for the World Cup. The third and fourth-placed teams in each group advance to the fourth round, which will see the teams divided into two groups of three. The top team in each group will qualify for the World Cup, while the second-placed teams will play a continental play-off to qualify for FIFA World Cup 2026 to be stage in the US, Canada and Mexico.
