GRS likely to maintain electoral pact with Sabah Pakatan in upcoming state election
Chief Minister and GRS chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor confirmed discussions with stakeholders, including Prime Minister and Pakatan Harapan chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, emphasizing continued cooperation with both state and federal governments.
"We will make the best decision for Sabah because, for us, political stability is key," Hajiji said at a scholarship presentation in Kota Kinabalu on Monday (July 21).
Hajiji, also Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah president, prioritizes stability over electoral victory and indicated GRS's intent to contest the majority of the 73 state seats. Seat negotiations are ongoing, but Hajiji insists GRS must lead by contesting most constituencies.
While Hajiji supports continued collaboration with Sabah Pakatan, grassroots pressure for GRS to go solo has intensified, particularly after a joint convention by Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) and Sabah STAR, where chants of "solo" highlighted support for state-based governance without national coalition reliance.
This sentiment reflects long-standing frustrations among Sabahans towards federal leaders and peninsula-based parties, who are accused of sidelining local concerns. Tensions are further fueled by Sabah Umno's involvement in the federal government.
Accusations against them attempting to unseat Hajiji's administration last year led to a significant rift between parties.
Gagasan Rakyat is set to hold a three-day convention this weekend, seen as pivotal for mobilising the party's machinery in anticipation of a potential snap election. "This convention is important as we will be facing the state election any time," Hajiji noted.

Sabah CM, Sarawak Premier To Join July 29 Sulawesi Sea Talks
KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Bernama) -- Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg are expected to join the national delegation for the Malaysia-Indonesia annual consultation in Jakarta on July 29, where discussions will include matters related to the Sulawesi Sea. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the presence of the two leaders was crucial as any agreement related to the country's borders must receive approval from these two state governments, while also allowing their views to be conveyed directly to Indonesia. 'This matter must be agreed to by the Sabah government. Therefore, on July 29, we will continue discussions in Jakarta, and the Sabah Chief Minister will be part of the delegation, as Sabah's consent is required whenever there are discussions regarding the border,' he said.

Tanjung Aru PGRS confident of winning three seats
Published on: Tuesday, July 22, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 22, 2025 By: Iskandar Dzulkifli Text Size: PGRS Tanjung Aru Division Chief Datuk Awang Ahmad Sah Sahari said this confidence is based on the current situation of strong support for local parties. Kota Kinabalu: Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (PGRS) will ensure Tanjung Aru, Tanjung Keramat and Petagas are won by Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the coming 17th state election (PRN17). PGRS Tanjung Aru Division Chief Datuk Awang Ahmad Sah Sahari said this confidence is based on the current situation of strong support for local parties. According to him, the situation also reflects the instability within Sabah Umno, particularly the Putatan Division, which had previously been confident in its ability to reclaim all three seats in the coming 17th state election (PRN17). 'This sentiment is also a clear message of the Sabah people's rejection of external parties, particularly Umno, while expressing their support for GRS as a coalition of local parties. 'This situation is evident from the survey we conducted, particularly in Petagas, Tanjung Aru and Tanjung Keramat, which showed that the majority of the people reject national parties and instead support GRS.' 'Support from the youth, particularly new and undecided voters, largely favours GRS and local leadership to continue leading Sabah after the 17th state election (PRN17).' 'For the people, only local parties like GRS truly understand the heartbeat of Sabah's citizens,' he said when met at the Tanjung Aru Open Fut8 Football Championship organised by the PGRS Tanjung Aru Division here on July 20. He was commenting on remarks by Umno Putatan Division Chief, Jeffrey Nor Mohamad, who had earlier expressed confidence in capturing all three seats in PRN17. He said that such confidence was understandable, as the three seats previously belonged to Umno, particularly Petagas, which was once a stronghold of Barisan Nasional (BN). Awang, who is also Petagas Assemblyman, said the focus on safeguarding the interests and welfare of the people through the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) agenda had also contributed to this public support. He said under the leadership of the Chief Minister and GRS Chairman, Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor, various assistance programmes had been provided in education, social welfare and development. 'Under the SMJ agenda, the GRS government has provided substantial assistance and incentives to the people. 'In education alone, there are numerous free initiatives for Sabah's children that have never been implemented by previous governments, including the SMJ housing aid, Syukur programme and many others.' 'All these factors contribute to the public's support for GRS, particularly in Petagas, Tanjung Aru and Tanjung Keramat, thereby securing the seats for GRS in the coming 17th state election,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? ‘Development plans often fail to reflect needs of the people'
Published on: Tuesday, July 22, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 22, 2025 By: Sisca Humphrey Text Size: Sa'adilah also emphasised on the persistent gap between planning and execution in national development, which he said remains a major issue. Kota Kinabalu: National development plans, though well-formulated, often fail because they do not reflect the realities of local communities. Former Director of the Centre for Value Creation and Human Well-Being Studies (Insan) Datuk Dr Sa'adilah Abdillah, said that development must begin from within communities, taking into account the rich civilisation and cultural heritage of Sabah. 'If we want to develop the people of Sabah, we must begin with the community itself. 'We once had a high level of civilisation, but as bureaucracy took over, that heritage and capacity began to erode,' he said after a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13) held here on Monday. He said many Sabahans today no longer recognise their own heritage and called for grassroots-level community education to be revived. 'There are progressive elements within our society, but we don't highlight them. 'Sometimes we prioritise outside influences and impose an urban image onto rural communities. That's inaccurate, because their context is different,' he said. According to him, facilitators are much needed, including financial and technical experts but more importantly, members of the community and those working with them, including policymakers and political leaders, must be trained. 'Leaders must understand the community. If they don't, and if they lack capability, that's where weak implementation stems from,' he said. He acknowledged that leadership ability is not solely determined by educational background. Sa'adilah also emphasised on the persistent gap between planning and execution in national development, which he said remains a major issue. 'We have good plans. But when it comes to implementation, that's where the problem lies. 'Those tasked with carrying them out may not understand what is to be achieved or how to achieve it,' he said. He highlighted that development plans often fail to reflect the true needs of the local population. In fact, the community itself may not fully understand what is being offered to them. 'Previously, before bureaucracy took over, every layer of society had a role. Everyone worked together toward a common goal. We need to revive that spirit,' he said. He said while development blueprints such as RMK13 are important, all parties from top leaders and policymakers to grassroots leaders must play their roles seriously in ensuring their success. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
