Rozaid posthumously honoured at Hawana 2025
KUALA LUMPUR: The late Rozaid Abdul Rahman was posthumously honoured at the National Journalists Day (Hawana) 2025.
Rozaid, who served as the media and strategic communications director for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, was the recipient of the Hawana 2025 Special Award.
His eldest son, Roz Ariffin, 34, accepted the award from Anwar at the Hawana 2025 gathering in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
Rozaid, who previously held the position of group consulting editor at The Star, passed away from a heart attack on Aug 18 last year.
During his illustrious career, Rozaid also served as the group editor of Sinar Harian.
Born on Oct 1, 1964, in Nibong Tebal, Penang, Rozaid began his career as a cadet journalist at Utusan Melayu in 1984 and became the youngest news editor of the Utusan Group at 27.
Malaysian Press Institute president Datuk Yong Soo Heong received the Hawana 2025 Award. He previously served as Bernama's editor-in-chief.
With over five decades of experience in the media industry, Yong began his journalism career at The Star and The Straits Echo.

Shafee files police report on behalf of Najib over 'royal addendum'
KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah has filed a police report, on behalf of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, against former attorney general Tan Sri Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh concerning the issue of the Royal Addendum, Sinar Harian reports. Muhammad Shafee, who is Najib's lead counsel, told the Malay language daily that he was instructed by Najib to file the report at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters on Monday (June 16). "Previously, Najib had sought permission to file a police report either from within prison or with the assistance of prison authorities to make a report at the Kajang district police headquarters. "However, the request did not receive a positive response. Therefore, he instructed me to file the report," he said on Monday. Shafee said that the report was filed against Ahmad Terrirudin under Sections 204 and 209 of the Penal Code. "The offences alleged in the report are related to the Royal Addendum. I will not comment further as this report is an investigation document," he told Sinar Harian. Earlier, on May 29, Shafee revealed that Najib had not received any response despite seven letters being sent to confirm the existence of the Royal Addendum. At a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex, Shafee explained that the letters were sent to the then Attorney General, Ahmad Terrirudin, the Home Affairs Ministry, and the director-general of Prisons. However, he said that there was no response or confirmation that the letters had been received by any of the relevant parties.

Malaysia Media Council to boost inclusive media growth
KUALA LUMPUR: The establishment of the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) is expected to support and develop the media industry across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak, ensuring inclusive and equitable growth for all regions. Kuching Division Journalists Association president and MMC founding board member, Ronnie Teo Teck Wei, expressed this hope, emphasising the need for a robust support system to empower local media agencies and practitioners. 'It is an honour to be part of this founding board for the Malaysia Media Council, representing Sarawak. 'It is my hope that, with the MMC, we can support and develop the media industry across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak, ensuring inclusive and equitable growth for all regions,' he told Bernama, today. He highlighted the importance of strengthening local media, particularly in Sarawak, amid rapid technological advancements. 'We need to act as a key support system for local media agencies and practitioners, especially in Sarawak, to help the industry thrive amid rapid technological advancements. 'It is also crucial for caring for the welfare of media workers, and holding media owners accountable for fair labour practices and ethical reporting,' he said. Meanwhile, Gerakan Media Merdeka (GERAMM) representative to the board, Mohd Radzi Abdul Razak, expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him to serve as a board member of the MMC. He said that the establishment of the council marked a significant milestone in the long-term effort to strengthen Malaysia's media ecosystem, to be more independent, accountable, and professional. 'For over a decade, GERAMM, alongside fellow media practitioners, has championed the creation of a self-regulatory body, which is truly free from political interference and vested interests,' he said. 'My appointment to the founding board is a responsibility to uphold the original spirit of the struggle, and to carry it forward in shaping the policies, guidelines and frameworks of the MMC,' he said. Mohd Radzi reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that the council operates independently, fairly and transparently, in regulating the media industry. 'I welcome input and suggestions from all stakeholders, so that MMC can truly function as a respected, independent and trusted body,' he added. The list of the founding board members of the MMC was announced by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil during the HAWANA 2025 main celebration, officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL), today. Besides Teo and Mohd Radzi, other board members include Borneo Post and Utusan Borneo general manager Wong Yang Yong; Daily Express editor-in-chief Datuk Sardahthisa James; Malaysiakini chief executive officer Premesh Chandran Jeyachandran; and Astro Awani editor-in-chief Ashwad Ismail. Also appointed to the board are National Union of Journalists Peninsular Malaysia (NUJ) secretary-general Teh Athira Mohamed Yusof; Tamil Media Association of Malaysia president S. Malaysia Launches Media Council After 50-Year Vision Realised
KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysian Media Council (MMC) marks a historic milestone, fulfilling a 50-year vision first proposed by Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, which stakeholders have hailed as a turning point for media self-regulation. MMC founding board member Datuk Sardahthisa James said the establishment represented a paradigm shift in media governance, enabling industry players to set their ethical standards and best practices while fostering constructive collaboration with the government. 'It does not mean that the government is abdicating its role in regulating the media, as it will always be needed to navigate an environment that considers certain matters sensitive. 'What the MMC does is provide an opportunity for the media to be constructive and work with the government on what these good practices should constitute,' the Daily Express editor-in-chief told Bernama today. The MMC Act took effect yesterday, with Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil announcing the council's 12-member founding board at the HAWANA 2025 celebration main event, which Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officiated at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre. James noted that while the late Tun Abdul Razak's original vision for the MMC focused on guiding media operations, he could not have anticipated the way digital media and Generative AI would revolutionise information, helping people make informed decisions. 'Therefore, the MMC must now develop strategies to navigate these challenges and propose solutions that serve Malaysian media while meeting public expectations,' he said. He added that the MMC's immediate challenge lies in addressing the impact of emerging technologies, including digital media and Generative AI, on information dissemination while developing acceptable guidelines for Malaysian media practitioners. James, who is also a member of the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Board of Governors, highlighted the council's inclusive nature, noting significant representation from East Malaysian media, particularly from Sabah, in line with the spirit of equal partnership enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement, which determines journalistic standards. Meanwhile, Utusan Borneo Sabah editor-in-chief Datuk Lichong Angkui lauded the MADANI Government and Anwar for finally establishing MMC after decades of advocacy from industry stakeholders. 'Certainly, the HAWANA 2025 stage has become a historic moment for us, the media fraternity, to celebrate with smiles of joy as the dream of seeing this council formed has finally become a reality,' he said. Lichong expressed hope that the MMC would not only serve as a regulatory body but, more importantly, as a strong, independent, and inclusive protector in preserving the integrity and freedom of the media in this country. Tawau Journalists and Media Practitioners Association (Pewarta) deputy chairman Tamrin Jamil said the MMC's establishment is timely to safeguard the local media industry amid rapid technological advancements. 'MMC not only functions as a regulatory body but also as a crucial support system for local media agencies and practitioners,' he said, adding that the establishment reflects the MADANI Government's commitment to implementing institutional reform. 'It also serves as a mechanism to rebuild public trust in the media by promoting media literacy and ethical journalism,' he added. Veteran journalist Lagatah Toyos of the Daily Express said the MMC could further consolidate Malaysia's media industry, particularly local outlets in Sabah, allowing them to remain resilient, relevant, and credible despite the challenges of the modern era. 'MMC is also expected to help restore public trust in the journalism profession while prioritising the welfare and safety of media practitioners, regardless of whether they are from government or private media,' she added.
