Sheryl Swoopes shows allegiances as Paige Bueckers joins Caitlin Clark in WNBA

Basketball icon Sheryl Swoopes has gained a title of
'Caitlin Clark
hater' among fans since the Iowa standout entered the professional scene, drawing ire again for her comments on a recent podcast.
Critics jumped on Swoopes for incorrectly stating on air that Clark played five seasons with Iowa before becoming the top pick by Indiana Fever in the 2024
WNBA
Draft and saying she wasn't exactly "dominating" in the league. Notably, Clark bagged the WNBA Rookie of the Year award,
leading to a backtrack from Swoopes
who eventually offered an apology and
even pegged the Fever as possible champs in 2025.
Yet, Swoopes stirred the pot again, this time with Clark's followers, for sporting a
Paige Bueckers
tee on the 'Gils Arena' podcast.

Bueckers heads to the Dallas Wings fresh from nabbing a national championship in college.
And with Swoopes showcasing support for the UConn prodigy, echoes of last year's omitted accolades for Clark have resurfaced amongst her supporters.
"Sheryl Swoopes is a Generational Hater. Like she really hates Caitlin Clark," vented one fan online. "This is just hilarious, it just feels petty now. She needs to move on, we have," chimed in another.
"We should just turn it around and start talking about how Paige is gonna be better than Swoopes ever was," quipped one enthusiastic fan. While some of Clark's supporters reckon Swoopes harbors a biased view against the Fever ace, the iconic WNBA figure sought to dispel such notions in the previous season.
After making an error with Clark's stats before the 2024 WNBA Draft, Swoopes reached out with an apology, and the top draft pick responded by calling her "inspiring" to everyone in the league. "Hey Caitlin! I wanted to personally reach out to you and say I made a mistake on what year this is for you," Swoopes conveyed in a heartfelt message to Clark.

"I also have nothing but respect for you and your game and appreciate your skill. Congrats on everything you have accomplished thus far. Be blessed."
On the 'Unapologetically Angel' podcast hosted by Angel Reese, Swoopes poured more accolades on Clark. 'I'm going to give Caitlin Clark her flowers,' declared Swoopes.
"Yes, I said that... I'm going to give Caitlin her flowers because I think what she has done coming into this league absolutely has brought more eyes, whether you like them or not. But has brought more eyes, more marketing. Like people just want to watch the game, and they want to talk about it."
In her conversation with ESPN before the 2025 WNBA season kicked off, Swoopes again praised Indiana as a championship threat after lauding the front office's strategy of building the team around Clark.

"The team that I feel made the biggest moves, maybe the best moves, that would be the Indiana Fever," declared basketball icon Sheryl Swoopes. "I think the Indiana Fever went from just being in the playoffs last season to potentially winning a championship."
Swoopes highlighted the team's top-notch additions: "You add the OG DeWanna Bonner, who plays both ends of the floor and is a competitor, and Natasha Howard, who is another OG, who is going to bring the defensive presence. And then you're bringing back Aliyah
Boston
, who continues to get better every single year."
She couldn't hide her enthusiasm for Kelsey Mitchell's scoring prowess and Caitlin Clark's off-season progress: "Can we talk about Kelsey Mitchell, who is just a walking bucket? How much stronger Caitlin got in the offseason, you know she was in the gym working on her game. This Indiana Fever team, they have put the pieces together in this offseason, and I'm excited to see what they're going to do."

Angel Reese deeply touched by Karen Lacy mother's performance at late LSU star's funeral

WNBA star Angel Reese labeled Kyren Lacy's mother's rendition of 'I will always love you' at his funeral as 'beautiful'. Lacy died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after crashing his car while attempting to evade local police in Houston, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office. This had come just weeks after he had been involved in a fatal crash in December, which he was arrested weeks later for after reportedly fleeing the scene at the time of the incident. Lacy was just 24 years old when he passed, which hit home for a lot of athletes heading to the NFL Draft with many of his LSU teammates paying tribute. The incident also clearly touched Reese - who is set to reunite with former LSU teammate Hailey Van Lith in the WNBA - as she reacted to his mother's rendition of a Whitney Houston classic. Reese, who played college basketball for LSU and delivered the program a national championship in 2023, shared the video along with the caption: 'This is so beautiful.' Lacy had declared for the 2025 NFL Draft on Dec. 19, two days after the crash he was involved in. On Jan. 12, he turned himself in to authorities, was jailed, and then released on $151,000 bail, according to police records. Lacy was initially invited to the Scouting Combine, before being uninvited. But the wideout participated at LSU's pro day last month and was ranked as high as the No. 6 receiver prospect in the draft by ESPN. He wrote: 'As stated by his attorney, there was a high probability that the felony charge of negligent homicide would have been declined by a Grand Jury this past Monday. 'Kyren was heartbroken by the tragic loss of Mr. Hall. He was willing to adhere to any civil matters, regardless of the Grand Jury's decision. That aside, the system failed us, and now we are mourning the loss of two lives.' In the 2024 season where LSU went 8-4 before winning the Texas Bowl against Baylor, Lacy led the Tigers in receiving touchdowns (9) and was second on the team in catches (58) and receiving yards (866). Across his five-year collegiate career at the University of Louisiana and LSU, he caught 162 passes for 2,360 yards and tallied 26 touchdowns.

WNBA star who threw elbow at Caitlin Clark quits league to join new team

Former Chicago Sky guard Chennedy Carter, who shot to fame during Caitlin Clark's standout Rookie of the Year season, has inked a deal with Adelitas De Chihuahua in Mexico's premier women's basketball league. Carter's departure from the WNBA marks another chapter in the league's history of second chances and redemption stories. Carter hit free agency without restrictions after the Sky opted not to extend her a qualifying offer. Her name had already been mired in controversy last season following a notorious flagrant foul on Clark that went viral in a 14-second video clip, amassing millions of views and arguably tarnishing her reputation more than her on-court performance ever did. "It's one of those things that just happens in basketball," Carter said in defense of the incident. "It was just like a little tap, like 'I'm here.' Not to like harm [her] or anything. So in basketball, a little bit, there are things called talking smack, that's a part of basketball," she added. "I think a play before, maybe I was elbowed, okay, that happens." Just one year after being selected fourth overall in the 2020 WNBA Draft by the Atlanta Dream and receiving All-Rookie Team accolades, she faced an indefinite suspension by the team due to "conduct detrimental to the team." Reports later emerged that she nearly came to blows with her former teammate, Courtney Williams, who reportedly asked her to adjust her attitude. After being traded to the Los Angeles Sparks, the problems didn't vanish. Carter was benched for poor conduct and ultimately waived after just 24 games, finding herself out of the league by 2023. When no WNBA team rang, she took her skills to Turkey, playing for Elazig Il Ozel İdarespor and Bursa. Her attempt to return to the WNBA with the Sky under first-year head coach Teresa Weatherspoon followed. Despite scoring a career-high 17.5 points per game and shooting 49 percent from the field, when Weatherspoon was sacked and the Sky changed course after missing the playoffs, Carter once again found herself on the outside looking in. She won the Women's Chinese Basketball Association's league MVP while leading the league in scoring with 31.4 points per game. She scored 50 points in back-to-back games for Wuhan against Xiamen and Shanxi and made league history with two triple-doubles, including a game with 33 points, 17 rebounds, 10 assists, five steals, and a block against Hefei. Carter's skills, often likened to those of Allen Iverson, have never been doubted. Although she didn't receive an invitation to Unrivaled's domestic 3x3 offseason league, the opportunity to play in Chihuahua will allow Carter to perform without any interference from Caitlin Clark or previous WNBA issues.

WNBA star Rickea Jackson celebrates boyfriend's selection in first round of NFL Draft

WNBA star Rickea Jackson produced a heartwarming moment on Thursday as she celebrated her boyfriend becoming a first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft . Former Tennessee Volunteers linebacker James Pearce Jr. was made up after being selected as the No. 26 pick by the Atlanta Falcons to officially confirm the end of his college football career. The move, which cost a 2026 first-round pick for the Falcons after they traded back into the first round for Pearce, sparked a lot of excitement. Atlanta's decision appears to be worth it, however, having paired Pearce with No. 15 pick Jalon Walker, who starred for the Georgia Bulldogs last term as they reached the College Football Playoff quarter-finals . The two new additions significantly improve the NFC South franchise's defense, which has become a bit of a problem area at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in recent years. In a clip shared by ESPN from its broadcast of Thursday's first round, Pearce is seen hugging and celebrating with his friends and family following the announcement. To his right, however, his girlfriend - WNBA superstar Jackson - is seen rubbing and tapping his leg in celebration as she smiles, before the former Tennessee star puts his arm around her. Pearce's selection officially sees him wave goodbye to his three-year college career with Tennessee, where some of his highlights included playing in all 13 games as a freshman in 2022, producing five tackles and two sacks, before ranking third in the SEC for sacks and fifth in the SEC regarding tackles for loss after returning for his sophomore year in 2023. As for Jackson, she is preparing to enter her second season in the WNBA with the Los Angeles Sparks after being selected as the fourth overall pick in the 2024 draft. During her debut campaign, the former Tennessee star played in all 40 regular-season games, starting 35, and averaged 13.4 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.5 assists. She was also named to the 2024 WNBA All-Rookie Team, but her efforts were not enough to prevent Los Angeles falling to an 8–32 overall record, seeing them finish rock bottom of the league standings. Following the end of the campaign, Jackson played in the inaugural season of Unrivaled , a new women's 3-on-3 basketball league founded by Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart. As for the 24-year-old's romance with Pearce, neither of them are yet to confirm anything officially, although Thursday's clip of the two of them sat together during the NFL Draft was enough to convince fans that they must be an item. After the clip went viral, Jackson hilariously posted on X (formerly Twitter): 'Soooo I have a doppelganger. Wow." Her post was met with some skepticism, although the majority took notice of the apparent humor in her message. Nonetheless, it appears that the rumors about a romance between them, which have swirled for more than a year now, are true, and would make perfect sense given both athletes attended the University of Tennessee.
