Leonardo DiCaprio faces backlash over Israel hotel project amid Gaza conflict

Express Tribune01-08-2025
Leonardo DiCaprio is facing backlash after reports linked him to the co-financing of a luxury eco-hotel in Israel.
The project, planned near Tel Aviv in Herzliya Pituach, is being developed by Israeli hotel chain Brown Hotels and is expected to focus on sustainability and high-end tourism.
DiCaprio's involvement reportedly comes through Regeneration.VC, the environmental-focused investment firm he co-founded. Brown Hotels' website names Regeneration.VC as a strategic partner in the development.
The timing of the announcement has drawn scrutiny, coming during the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza. Online critics have questioned the optics of investing in an Israeli luxury venture as violence and humanitarian concerns persist in Gaza.

Leonardo DiCaprio calls himself an environmentalist and yet he's building a hotel for israel who not only has been murdering and forced starving palestinians during this genocide israel also has dropped so many bombs on gaza that the environmental damage can take up to 40 years… https://t.co/qM6tJ2GRYt — jason 🦥🪐 (@spongebobsloth) July 29, 2025
The news seems simple: @LeoDiCaprio is building a hotel in #Israel. But when you hold a UN Peace Ambassador title and stay silent on #Gaza for 2 years, this move defines peak shamelessness, greed & inhumanity. pic.twitter.com/OO6pRpKxTM — سعید الهی🇮🇷 (@Saeidelahi1351) August 1, 2025
Brown Hotels continues to promote the project as part of a broader push for eco-conscious hospitality in the region.
As of now, neither DiCaprio nor Regeneration.VC has issued a statement in response to the backlash or to address concerns around the broader political context.
DiCaprio, known for his environmental activism and philanthropy, has previously championed sustainability through both personal initiatives and public-facing projects.
His link to a commercial venture in Israel during an active conflict has raised complex questions about the intersection of celebrity investments and geopolitical awareness.

Gilbert Arenas denies role in illegal gambling ring after arrest

Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas has broken his silence following his arrest on charges related to an alleged illegal gambling operation in Encino, California. Arenas, 43, was arrested on July 30 and later released on a $50,000 bond. In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter), Arenas danced down a staircase, saying, 'They can't hold me,' and captioned the clip, 'I'm back on the streets 🗣️ This ain't got shyt to do with me. Just rented the house. Wasn't apart.' Im Back on the Streets 🗣️This aint got shyt to do with me ' just rented the house' Wasnt apart — Gilbert Arenas (@NoChillGilZero) July 31, 2025 According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for Central California, Arenas and five others are accused of running a high-stakes illegal poker ring out of a rented mansion. The charges include one count of conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling business, one count of operating such a business, and one count of making false statements to federal investigators. Arenas pleaded not guilty, and his trial is set for September 23. The indictment also names Yevgeni 'Giora' Gershman, an alleged Israeli organized crime member, who is accused of recruiting young women to serve drinks, offer massages, and provide companionship during the poker games. Organizers reportedly took a cut from the women's tips and the game pots. Arenas' attorney, Jerome Friedberg, urged the public to respect Arenas' presumption of innocence, saying, 'He has the same right as any other citizen.' This isn't Arenas' first controversy involving card games. In 2009, he was suspended from the NBA after a locker room incident involving guns and a gambling dispute with teammate Javaris Crittenton. The case has once again put the former All-Star under legal scrutiny as federal prosecutors prepare for trial.

Katy Perry, Leonardo DiCaprio, and other celebrities caught in coastal tsunami scare

Tsunami waves flood an area after a powerful magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off Russia's far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, in Severo-Kurilsk, Sakhalin Region, Russia, July 30, 2025, in this still image taken from video. Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Survey of the Russian Academy of Sciences/Handout - REUTERS Katy Perry, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Aniston, and Oprah Winfrey are among the A-list celebrities whose coastal residences were swept into concern after a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia's coast triggered a tsunami advisory across the Pacific. The alert covers large sections of the US West Coast, Hawaii, and Alaska, regions known for their beachfront estates and celebrity hideaways. Leonardo DiCaprio's Malibu compound, estimated at over $13.8 million, and Jennifer Aniston's $21 million Montecito mansion fall within the zones under caution. Katy Perry owns a Santa Barbara, area estate reportedly worth $15 million, while Oprah Winfrey's sprawling $100 million Maui property has also been flagged due to its proximity to coastal areas impacted by wave activity. While no mandatory evacuations have been issued, residents have been strongly urged to avoid beaches and remain alert for several hours due to the risk of unpredictable wave activity. In Hawaii, waves measuring several feet reached shorelines on multiple islands, prompting local officials to open emergency routes and issue safety notices. On the mainland, California counties like Santa Barbara and Los Angeles, where many stars own property, also remain under advisory. So far, there have been no reports of injuries or structural damage. However, the situation has stirred concern among emergency services and locals, especially in areas where previous wildfires and flooding have already strained disaster response systems. Authorities continue to monitor for aftershocks and secondary wave surges, warning that unstable coastal conditions may persist.
