Mumbai: Nearly two-thirds families of those killed in the crash of Air India 's Dreamliner jet on June 12 have received their declared compensation so far, or the payment is in the final stages, Campbell Wilson , MD at the Tata Group-owned airline Friday told employees in a letter, reviewed by ET."Our teams have been helping families receive interim compensation . Every affected family is being directly assisted by an Air India representative, with nearly two-thirds having already received payment or are in the final stages," Wilson said. He added that the airline continues to have an on-ground presence in Ahmedabad, as required, where the Dreamliner crashed killing 241 people on board and 34 on the ground. Explaining the ongoing "safety pause" at Air India with a temporary scale-back of operations, Wilson said the "pause" is allowing voluntary additional aircraft checks and helping stabilise the flight schedule. He added that the extra aircraft ground time, with support from Boeing to check aircraft from the US manufacturer in Air India's fleet, is "allowing us to accelerate our aircraft reliability enhancement programs so that we emerge stronger than before."Elaborating on AI's commitment to investment and growth, Wilson said, "We will continue to invest in upgrading aircraft, products, service, systems, capabilities and, most of all, people." He added that delivering a "step change requires a similar uplifting of expectations, standards and mindsets."

JAL insolvency: Lenders reject Jaypee Infratech's request to accept its bid to acquire bankrupt firm
Lenders of Jaiprakash Associates Ltd (JAL) have turned down Jaypee Infratech 's request to accept its resolution plan to acquire the bankrupt diversified company. Five companies -- Adani Enterprises , Vedanta Group, Dalmia Bharat Cement, Jindal Power and PNC Infratech -- have submitted their resolution plans to acquire JAL. However, lenders of JAL, on June 25, had rejected the resolution plan of Suraksha Group-owned Jaypee Infratech Ltd as the bid was submitted late and without earnest money. According to sources, Jaypee Infratech requested the Committee of Creditors (CoC) of JAL to reconsider the decision to reject its bid. It sought permission to participate in the insolvency process. In a meeting on July 1, the members of the CoC unanimously agreed not to change its earlier decision to reject Jaypee Infratech's resolution plan, they added. Live Events In the meeting, the resolution professional also presented a brief summary of the five resolution plans, according to sources. A detailed summary of all five resolution plans would be prepared, based on which the highest bidder will be determined, they added. Some of the bids are conditional and linked to the outcome of the pending legal cases, they said. JAL, which has business interests spanning real estate, cement manufacturing, hospitality, and engineering & construction, was admitted into the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP) through the National Company Law Tribunal, Allahabad Bench, order dated June 3, 2024. JAL was taken to insolvency proceedings after the conglomerate defaulted on the payment of loans. Creditors are claiming a staggering Rs 57,185 crore. The National Asset Reconstruction Company Ltd (NARCL) leads the list of claimants after acquiring the stressed JAL loans from a consortium of lenders headed by the State Bank of India (SBI). JAL has major real estate projects like Jaypee Greens in Greater Noida, a part of Jaypee Greens Wishtown in Noida (both on the outskirts of the national capital), and the Jaypee International Sports City, strategically located near the upcoming Jewar International Airport. It also has three commercial/industrial office spaces in Delhi-NCR, while its hotel division has five properties in Delhi-NCR, Mussoorie, and Agra. JAL has four cement plants in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, and a few leased limestone mines in Madhya Pradesh. The cement plants, however, are non-operational. It also has investments in subsidiaries, including Jaiprakash Power Ventures Ltd, Yamuna Expressway Tolling Ltd, Jaypee Infrastructure Development Ltd and several other companies. Jaypee Group's Jaypee Infratech has already been acquired by Mumbai-based Suraksha Group through an insolvency process. Suraksha Group has to complete various stalled projects comprising around 20,000 apartments in Noida and Greater Noida. Economic Times WhatsApp channel )

Trump to begin talks with China over TikTok deal, says it's ‘good for China'
US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he plans to begin talks with China early next week about a potential deal involving the video app TikTok, the social media app with 170 million users in the US. 'I think we're gonna start Monday or Tuesday… talking to China, perhaps President Xi or one of his representatives, but we pretty much have a deal,' Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One. The president said the US will likely need China's approval for the deal. Asked how confident he was that Beijing would agree to a deal, 'I'm not confident, but I think so,' he said. 'President Xi and I have a great relationship, and I think it's good for them. I think the deal is good for China and it's good for us.' Trump also said he might visit Xi Jinping in China or the Chinese leader may visit the US. This comes after the two leaders last month invited each other to visit their respective countries. Last month, Trump extended a deadline to September 17 for TikTok's China-based parent company, ByteDance, to divest its US assets. A deal to spin off TikTok's US operations into a separate, majority US-owned company had been in progress earlier this year. But the plan was stalled after China signaled disapproval following Trump's announcement of new tariffs on Chinese goods. Trump's extension in June marked the third time he has delayed the ban or forced sale of TikTok, granting ByteDance another 90 days to find a US buyer or face a ban. Trump first intervened on his first day back in office, issuing an executive order just three days after the Supreme Court upheld the TikTok ban. A second order followed in April, setting a deadline of June 19. With the latest extension, TikTok now has until September to reach a deal. In a statement released the same day, TikTok expressed appreciation for the administration's approach. 'We are grateful for President Trump's leadership,' the company said, adding that it would 'continue to work with Vice President Vance's office' to reach an agreement. (With Inputs from Reuters)
