Nutritionist says Dirtea 'elevates energy' without caffeine crash

Daily Mirror18-05-2025
We spoke to a nutritionist about the effects of mushroom coffees like Dirtea to understand how the blends of organic arabica coffee with functional mushrooms, adaptogens and essential nutrients work
Coffee is one of the greatest discoveries ever. Even the dullest of days is somewhat manageable with a cup of hot coffee dragging us by the collar over the 5pm finish line. Then, when it's sunny, what's better than picking up an iced coffee? Nothing, I tell you, nothing.
But while multiple studies indicate the health benefits of cup of joe, it does come with one major downside: the caffeine crash. Normally hitting mid-afternoon, the only thing that normally gets us out of it is another coffee, which can lead to tossing and turning in bed for hours at night, creating a caffeine-induced sleep deprivation loop.
This is where mushroom coffees like Dirtea come in. Unlike regular coffee, they promise the boost without the caffeine crash - as well as a host of other benefits. Their blend is made with 100% arabica beans, with 1,000mg of Lion's Mane and B Vitamins (B6, B12, Patothenic Acid and Folic Acid).
Those are certainly a lot nutrients, but do they work? And if so, how? We reached out to nutritionist Clarissa Bell to explain what stands out about DIRTEA coffee.
She told The Mirror: "What sets DIRTEA's Coffee Superblend apart is the powerful combination of organic arabica coffee with functional mushrooms, adaptogens and essential nutrients, all carefully chosen to elevate energy, focus and resilience.
DIRTEA Mushroom Coffee
Product Description
"At its core is Lion's Mane, a functional mushroom known for its cognitive benefits. It can support mental clarity, memory and concentration, making it a powerful addition to your morning routine. Like caffeine, Lion's Mane is classed as a nootropic, which means that it enhances cognitive function. Taking them together compounds their benefits."
Outside of Lion's Mane, the other ingredients also pack a punch, according to Clarissa. She continues: "The blend also includes two well-known adaptogens, ashwagandha and maca. Adaptogens help the body manage stress more effectively, and in this case, they balance out the stimulating effects of coffee.
"Ashwagandha promotes steady energy levels and can soften the post-caffeine energy crash, while Maca supports cognition, mood and stamina. On top of all this, DIRTEA coffee is enriched with organic B vitamins that support natural energy metabolism, providing your body with resources to keep you energised all day long."
Of course, they aren't the only adaptogenic coffee on the market. London Nootropics is another popular option, containing Hifas da Terra lion's mane, cordyceps, and chaga mushroom extracts. They offer a five-star rated starter bundle for £40.
Otherwise, Amazon sells Javasu mushroom coffee, which contains lion's mane, chaga, cordyceps and L-Theanine. It has been rated 4.2 out of five by shoppers so far. Amazon sell a 150g box for £36.
Clarissa also elaborated on some of the other benefits DIRTEA can offer shoppers: "Many people find that switching to DIRTEA coffee delivers a noticeable shift in how they feel, starting with more sustained, balanced energy levels and sharper mental clarity. Many people report feeling more alert and productive, without the common side effects of caffeine like jitters, crashes or anxious energy.
"Beyond coffee, DIRTEA's functional mushroom range offers targeted support for a range of health goals. Chaga is exceptionally rich in antioxidants and supports immunity, digestion and skin health.
"Reishi is known for its calming effects, helping to regulate the stress response and promote deeper sleep while strengthening immune defences. Tremella is known for enhancing skin hydration and elasticity, making it a go-to for those interested in skin health from within. Cordyceps supports cellular energy, stamina and recovery, ideal for active lifestyles or anyone in need of a natural, caffeine-free energy lift."
DIRTEA's blend currently boasts a 4.8 from 19,848 reviews, with over 18,000 of those five star. One happy reviewer wrote: "I go to bed looking forward to my Dirtea coffee every morning. It is a real treat & I feel the benefits. I also love a Dirtea on the go!"
Another added: "I didn't think I'd like this as much as I do. I was looking for something to help with my concentration and focus. I'm going through peri menopause and my brain feels very scattered a lot of the time. I also knew caffeine wasn't my friend... but I LOVE COFFEE.
"So having already jumped on the DIRTEA Cacao bandwagon I thought I'd give the Coffee a go and see if a) it would help with my reduction of caffeine intake and b) would help with my focus and energy levels. Pleased to say it is doing both and I actually really look forward to my morning coffee now, it tastes great! Well done DIRTEA."
The affects of the coffee didn't work for everyone, with a reviewer noting: "I can't say I noticed much difference after finishing one jar.... Maybe I need more."
Another reviewer wrote: "Love the stuff. Started to feel positive affects after a couple of days, and only need one coffee now to get through the day." DIRTEA offer a pouch for £38 (63p per serving) or a subscription - including a free mug, jar and spoon - for £30 (50p per serving) on their website.

Health tech companies commit to Trump's plan to share YOUR medical records with hundreds of systems

Major health tech companies have agreed to work with the Trump administration to make their clients' medical records available across multiple healthcare systems. The administration announced that tech and insurance companies including Google, Amazon, OpenAI, UnitedHealth Group and CVS will roll out new apps powered by AI where users can upload their health records to access whenever they need them, making them more accessible and shareable among patients and their doctors. While supporters say the move will help make the fragmented health record system more accessible to patients, privacy experts have raised concerns about the potential risks. Officials announced the effort Wednesday, which will involve collaboration between the federal government and 60 tech and health companies. Electronic health records often don't transfer smoothly between providers, forcing patients to fill out redundant paperwork at every appointment. This can lead to delays in care, repeated tests, missing or incomplete information, and even missed or incorrect diagnoses. Patients will be able to upload their consolidated health records onto their apps of choice, such as Oura, Anthropic, and ZocDoc, which officials say will allow people to meld their medical care with lifestyle tracking and tips. However, insurance exchange experts warn that the plan raises serious privacy concerns. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services must comply with HIPAA, the federal health privacy law that prohibits unauthorized sharing of a person's medical information, but third-party tech companies are generally not bound by HIPAA unless they're acting as a provider's business associate — meaning health data shared directly with an app, rather than through a doctor or hospital, often isn't protected under the same rules. HHS Secretary Robert F Kennedy, Jr said Wednesday: 'For decades, bureaucrats and entrenched interests buried health data and blocked patients from taking control of their health. That ends today. 'We're tearing down digital walls, returning power to patients, and rebuilding a health system that serves the people. This is how we begin to Make America Healthy Again.' The new system, to be overseen by CMS, will require people to opt in. But this leaves room for inconsistent privacy protections, potential data commercialization hidden in the fine print, and little recourse if a tech company misuses personal health data outside HIPAA's purview. Once a patient's records are in the system, they will be able to transfer those records to wellness apps that track steps, exercise, and calories, a move that is designed for weight management and to help prevent or track diabetes. The weight-loss company Noom, for example, will be able to pull medical records, labs, or other tests of its users into its AI-driven analysis of what might help them lose weight, CEO Geoff Cook told the Associated Press. CMS said it plans to build an app 'library' on its site that will point people to trustworthy digital health tools. 'We have the tools and information available now to empower patients to improve their outcomes and their healthcare experience,' CMS Administrator Dr Mehmet Oz said. 'With the commitments made by these entrepreneurial companies today, we stand ready for a paradigm shift in the US healthcare system for the benefit of patients and providers.' But ethicists, patient advocates, and privacy experts fear the new initiative will be a minefield of data misuse, weak oversight, and uneven accountability. It remains unclear what privacy guardrails tech companies will erect for this nonbinding agreement with the administration and how it will hold those companies accountable for errors. Lawrence Gostin, a Georgetown University law professor who specializes in public health, told the AP: 'Patients across America should be very worried that their medical records are going to be used in ways that harm them and their families.' Even if apps use data that originated from a HIPAA-covered source, such as CMS, once in the hands of a non-covered third party, federal privacy protections on that data may weaken, depending on contracts and oversight. While the goal of the new CMS Interoperability Framework, which could go into effect as soon as next year, is to streamline health data sharing across a multitude of platforms, improved access to records enlarges targets for would-be hackers. It also increases the likelihood of sensitive data being shared with other parties without the person's consent. Jeffrey Chester, Executive Director of the Center for Digital Democracy, told the AP: 'This scheme is an open door for the further use and monetization of sensitive and personal health information.' This is President Trump's second attempt at devising a system that gives patients better access to their healthcare records. He made a similar proposal during his first term in 2018. It would have enabled people to easily transfer electronic health records from provider to provider, but it lacked the involvement of AI and some of the voluntary standards. The initiative did not have the impact the administration had hoped. Most providers did not switch to compatible systems and resisted sharing data for fear of a breach, while public awareness was low, so demand never reached expected levels.

Workout crazy Gen Z ditch alcohol as they 'prefer a cold plunge' to clubbing

Members of Gen Z are shunning nights out for the chance to wake up feeling fresh and healthy at the weekend. Young Brits are also indulging in new wellness trends like cold plunges Gen Z members are swapping late nights out for cosy nights in and cold plunges, according to new research. A poll of 18 to 28-year-olds revealed 39 percent of Gen Z prefer a night in instead of taking to the town. ‌ As for lazy weekend mornings, 27 percent of 18 to 28-year-olds prefer to be up doing some kind of fitness session on a Saturday morning instead of sleeping in, while a fifth of young adults admitted they still like to welcome the weekend with a doze. ‌ Nearly a quarter have indulged in a new wellness trends like a cold plunge, while exercise is key for young Brits, with just under three-quarters saying they had skipped a night out to get to a workout the next day, according to the study commissioned by Samsung. It comes after a woman claimed 'I regret marrying an older man, one part of our history has given me the ick'. ‌ Around 30 percent say they go to a juice bar or smoothie cafe at least once a week. Just over a third also said they consume wellness drinks like ginger shots, kombucha or matcha regularly. Annika Bizon, Mobile Experience VP of Product and Marketing, at Samsung UK & Ireland, said: 'With almost three-quarters of young people in the UK skipping a night out to be fresh for a morning workout, it's clear that the late-night party culture is giving way to a new kind of social life built around wellness and feeling your best." ‌ 'That shift is exactly why wearable tech is becoming so ingrained in our daily lives. Our new Galaxy Watch8 gives us the insights we need to make healthier choices, with tools like the Antioxidant Index, Running Coach and Bedtime Guidance helping to support a more balanced lifestyle that today's generation is actively embracing.' The research was commissioned to coincide with the launch of new health features on Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 Series & Galaxy Ring. These include AI-powered sleep tracking, personalised training plans and Energy Score – a daily measurement of your physical and mental energy readiness. ‌ Gen Z have also been found to be struggling with money compared to previous generations. As previously reported by The Mirror, six in ten young adults are struggling to make ends meet, causing them to become "anxious, frustrated, confused and sad." A study for First Direct bank revealed that financial difficulties are the top cause of the quarter-life crisis. As a result, the idea of having a home, a car and a steady job by the age of 25 has become something of a distant dream and instead, young people are focused on pursuing professional goals and earning as much money as possible while climbing the career ladder. Nonetheless, the struggle to make ends meet persists. Dr Emma Palmer-Cooper, a research psychologist, told The Mirror that the journey into adulthood has shifted significantly due to the cost of living. She said: "Where previous generations may have been married, settled in full-time work, and starting a family by their mid-20s, today these milestones often occur much later — sometimes nearly a decade on.'
