Brake failure reignites Magoebaskloof safety concerns

TZANEEN – The truck carrying gas cylinders on the Magoebaskloof pass last Wednesday, July 16, suffered brake failure, renewing concerns over heavy vehicles illegally using the route.

Peter Pilusa, a Tzaneen-based diesel mechanic and brake system specialist, said such failures are often avoidable.
'Brake failure usually results from poor maintenance, overheating, or driver error,' he explained.
'Many drivers descend the pass relying only on service brakes, rather than using engine retarders or lower gears. This causes the brakes to overheat, a condition known as brake fade.'
Pilusa said that worn brake linings, air system issues, and leaking brake fluid also contribute to such incidents. He stressed the importance of thorough pre-trip inspections, especially before navigating steep routes like Magoebaskloof.
'Regular inspections, especially before tackling a pass like Magoebaskloof, are crucial,' he said.
Brake fade, particularly in trucks with air brake systems, occurs when overheated components can no longer produce the friction needed to stop the vehicle, leaving drivers with little control on downhill slopes.
Experts are calling on transport companies to improve driver training, especially for mountain pass navigation, and enforce strict vehicle maintenance. Authorities are also being urged to increase brake check enforcement at key points along major passes.
The incident adds to a growing list of similar cases on Magoebaskloof in recent months.
Pilusa said he hopes this latest event encourages transport operators and drivers to consider appropriate and lasting changes.
'The road has always been steep,' he said. 'What needs to change is how seriously we take safety and maintenance.'

'Fix the Georges Valley road properly. But even then it wont stop the trucks from making use of the R71. If companies don't take accountability for their fleet we will forever be fighting a losing battle.' – Magda Jacobs Koekemoer
'Company must bear code of conduct and road detector if someone pass the destination to report immediately.' – Janson Raptor
'Road has no problem, inexperienced, incompetent drivers, mechanical fault trucks is the problem.' – Bra Kaizer Kgops
'All trucks should use R81 which is much safer and any truck found on the R71 be fined or owner lose operating license.' – Gavin Monama
'As it is Magoebas is dangerous enough for any vehicle…. WHY would any company allow their truck to travel this route????? Mooketsi is only 10km longer BUT safe and a lot faster!' – Janine Windell
'Have traffic police actually do their duty at the turnoff and direct trucks onto the R81. Of course, that road is in SERIOUS need of repair! It's bad for tourism on that road to doom…' – Zu Groenewald

Subaru unveils new front-wheel-drive Toyota-based Uncharted EV

Subaru has whipped the wraps off the Uncharted, a Toyota-based all-electric crossover, which will initially be available in front-wheel drive. The Subaru Uncharted shares its e-TNGA platform with the new Toyota CH-R+, but receives Subaru-specific styling and chassis tuning to set it apart from the crossover/SUV it is based on. Significantly, the Uncharted debuts as Subaru's only front-wheel-drive model, with all-wheel-drive variants set to be introduced at a later stage. The FWD-equipped Premium model features a single electric motor that generates 164kW. The AWD GT and Sport variants will produce 544kW from a dual electric-motor setup. Subaru claims the more powerful variants are capable of completing the 0-100km/h sprint in less than five seconds. All trims utilise a 74.7kWh battery pack, which supports 150kW DC fast charging. Plugged into the latter facility, Subaru says the battery is capable of recharging from 10% to 80% in 30 minutes. An 11kW AC onboard charger that can be used to charge at home is also present. The single- and twin electric-motor models offer 480km and 466km of all-electric operating range, respectively, the company says. Inside, the Uncharted plays host to a 14-inch, touch-enabled infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto screen mirroring, dual wireless smartphone chargers, and dedicated USB-C ports for rear passengers. Standard safety features include the firm's EyeSight driver assistance technology, adaptive cruise control, collision avoidance alert, and a driver-monitoring system. Sport and GT trims receive X‑Mode, a panoramic sunroof, a heated steering wheel, a surround-view camera array, and distinct upholstery options. Weekend wrecks: at least 24 collisions on KZN roads

Weekend wrecks: at least 24 collisions on KZN roads KZN was rocked by a number of road accidents over the weekend, with one ambulance service alone treating 60 patients in 24 collisions across the province. 'The most significant incident occurred on Saturday along the R34 near Newcastle, where a passenger bus carrying 58 people lost control and veered off the roadway,' said Craig Botha, spokesperson for KwaZulu Private Ambulance. 'Emergency responders rushed to the scene to find 11 passengers had sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious. ALSO READ: One critical in single vehicle accident on N2 'All injured passengers were stabilised on-site before being transported to nearby hospitals for further medical care. 'The weekend's incidents weren't confined to a single area, with collisions reported across multiple regions of KZN. 'Near Empangeni on the N2, two separate accidents saw vehicles lose control and collide with road barriers, resulting in one patient sustaining serious injuries requiring immediate medical attention.' Reporting on accidents in other parts of KZN, Botha noted a two-vehicle pile-up on the R33/R34 near Vryheid, resulting in two patients requiring urgent care, while a Shelley Beach accident on the south coast resulted in minor injuries. 'Emergency services continue to urge motorists to exercise caution on KZN roads, particularly during busy weekend periods when traffic volumes increase significantly,' urged Botha. Gavin Hunt aims to restore Durban City FC's former glory

DURBAN City chairperson Farook Kadodia with club technical director Ernst Middendorp and head coach Gavin Hunt accepted a small fleet of BMWs as part of sponsorship from BMW Durban South facility. | Doctor Ngcobo/Independent Newspapers Image: Doctor Ngcobo/Independent Newspapers VETERAN Premier Soccer League (PSL) coach Gavin Hunt said he plans on bringing Durban City FC, formerly Maritzburg United, back to match-winning potential as the side returns to Premiership football this season. Hunt was speaking to the media at the BMW Durban South facility, where the Chatsworth-based team unveiled a new partnership with the luxury car brand. A small fleet of BMW cars was gifted to Durban City officials on Tuesday, among which were club chairperson Farook Kadodia and technical director Ernst Middendorp. Stability is one of Hunt's main focus points going into the PSL season, saying that he believes the club still has good bones and just needs to make a few signings to get the ball rolling again. "They must have had a very small squad last year which I like but obviously we need to add in a few numbers. 'The approach is to just concentrate on getting stability and concentrate on being proactive and winning football matches which is always going to be difficult with the market. It's a very difficult market and a very difficult league so a lot of games can go either way. Gavin Hunt, head coach of Durban City FC, says the teams former nucleus is in tact. Hunt's approach going into the season will focus in brining stability to the side. @IOLsport — Jehran Daniel (@JehranD) July 22, 2025 '(You have to) go in smaller steps and set smaller goals, and try to achieve those before you think of the end line or before people make statements about winning this or that. "Lets try and crawl a little before we walk. The time is short so we have to work very hard behind the scenes,' added Hunt. The 61-year-old said he's already got an idea of what the team has and needs in the two weeks he's been at the helm. 'We don't want square pegs in round holes. We want a certain type of player with a character that will fit a club like this. They need to have the right mentality and obviously the ability. We don't just want good players, but the players that we need," he said. 'We are obviously short in certain areas so it's a bit of having a look, trying to train, trying to get a system in place and trying to find a way of playing all at once. You are trying to do a million things and as I said, time is short. "We are going to Joburg next week which will help me a lot because we got a couple of games there. The game will tell you what you need. You can train all day but the game tells you what you need.
