Android 16 is bringing Advanced Protection mode, here is what it is and how it will work

The Advanced Protection mode is designed to provide a comprehensive shield against common threats. For example, it will block unsafe network connections by disabling 2G support and preventing the use of outdated WEP Wi-Fi networks. These types of connections are easier for hackers to exploit, so turning them off helps reduce the risk of snooping or attacks. However, 2G may still be accessible in emergencies, like when you need to make a distress call.advertisement
Advanced Protection mode will also prevent the installation of apps from outside the Google Play Store — commonly known as sideloading — a move that should stop users from accidentally installing harmful apps. In addition, it activates something called Memory Tagging Extension (MTE), which helps catch bugs and memory-related issues in apps, further improving overall device security. The mode even adds extra protection to common apps. Google Messages and Phone by Google are already set up to work with Advanced Protection, offering features to detect spam and scams. The Theft Detection Lock and Offline Device Lock will help keep your phone secure even if it's lost or stolen by locking it down and blocking unauthorised access. Thanks to a new AdvancedProtectionManager API introduced in earlier beta versions of Android 16, app developers will also be able to detect when this mode is enabled. That means apps — especially banking or secure communication tools — can adapt and offer extra safety features for users who've turned it on.Another useful feature is related to web browsing. If you land on a non-HTTPS page, which could be insecure, the system will issue a warning. Android Safe Browsing, which alerts you about suspicious or harmful websites, is also part of the package.Google first began working on this feature in October 2024, and it has gradually appeared in a couple of Android 16 beta updates. A wider release is expected once Android 16 rolls out in its stable form, likely in the coming weeks. Google is also expected to showcase more details during its next episode of The Android Show on May 13, followed by further announcements at the company's annual I/O developer conference.

Google's Find Hub Feature Will Soon Work Without Wi-Fi Or Mobile Network: Here's How
Google's location tracking for Android devices could soon work beyond the network regions and help people avoid getting stranded. Google is going to make its Find device network work better with a new upgrade coming in the next few months. The company rebranded the tool to Find Hub earlier this year and soon it will work even without any Wi-Fi or network in the region. Yes, Google is highly expected to offer satellite support for its device location tracking feature and it should be rolling out for everyone in the near future. But the details about the upgraded tool have been spotted recently and highlighted in a report as well. Satellite tracking makes these features extremely useful, especially when people head over to no-network areas. Find Hub is essentially the same Find my device network in a rebranded fashion from Google. The satellite upgrade has been mentioned by Android Authority that has found some clues about its usability and purpose. It does seem like Google could have it available for everyone soon. Find Hub via satellite is going to help you in remote places and allow others to know your position, especially if you get stranded somewhere without a mobile network. Google had recently made Find My work offline and this will also be equally useful for many users. The report says the satellite feature will not give you immediate position but ping the point of the device every 15 minutes. It also is going to work when the user enables it from the settings and the feature will work in the background, so that others don't know how the tracking is still active to keep their location private. Satellite-based services are not cheap. We are keen to see if Google plans to limit its support to the premium devices (or just Pixels for now) and eventually make it a paid feature. The Pixel 10 series is launching next week and it does seem quite premature to assume Google could share something about the new updates at the event, but going by the tests being done at the code level on the Find Hub app, its public availability might be not far away now. view comments First Published: August 15, 2025, 15:23 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. WhatsApp will now tell you how to write…
Meta-owned instant messaging platform, WhatsApp, is testing a new AI-powered feature that is said to provide users with writing suggestions. This feature is rolled out to a limited number of users in beta, allowing users to test and provide feedback before its official release. A WABetaInfo report highlighted that the new feature will likely be known as the Writing Help assistant feature. This feature could utilise AI Private Processing to help users refine and customise messages and choose from multiple suggestions, while keeping their chats and messages private. Here's how the new WhatsApp AI-powered messaging feature could work. WhatsApp's new Writing Help assistant feature A new WhatsApp feature has been spotted in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.23.7 update on the Google Play Store. This new feature is called the Writing Help assistant, which enables users to refine texts before sending them using Meta's Private Processing technology. What does this mean exactly? Well, several AI-related tasks or queries within the app are processed via encrypted connections and anonymous routing, allowing user messages and chats to remain private. Now, with the help of private AI processing, WhatsApp's Writing Help assistant feature will provide users with different tones for the messages, such as professional, funny, and others. It will also allow users to rephrase or have AI proofread the text before sending. After selecting the tone, users will be provided with three AI-generated suggestions from which they can select the desired text. Additionally, the recipient will not be notified of the AI's contribution to refining the text. Once it rolls out to all the users, the Writing Help assistant icon will appear between the emoji and the GIF icon. Then, users will curate a text to later refine and change the tone using AI. However, the feature may not compose texts from scratch. It was also highlighted that WhatsApp will not automatically change or send a message without the user's approval, and the changes will only be made to selected text and not the entire chat thread. Currently, WhatsApp's new Writing Help assistant feature is in beta version, and it is expected to make a stable release in the upcoming app updates.

FASTag annual pass at ₹3,000 starts from August 15: Step-by-step guide to buy
FASTag is introducing an annual pass starting August 15, upgrading highway commute in the country by offering users the option of unlimited travel for a flat fee of ₹3,000 per year. The annual pass is also accompanied by a distance-based pricing model for those who do not travel long distances regularly.(PTI File Photo for representation) Unlike the normal FASTag recharge system, where citizens need to recharge once the balance is exhausted, the annual pass comes with a prepaid model offering up to 200 toll crossings or one year of validity, whichever is earlier. A boon for frequent highway and expressway commuters in India, the annual pass ensures unlimited access to national highways, expressways, and state expressways without the need for any additional recharges throughout the year. The annual pass is also accompanied by a distance-based pricing model for those who do not travel long distances regularly. Under this framework, users can opt to pay ₹50 for every 100 kilometers, replacing the current variable toll rates and ensure flexibility and affordability during their occasional travel. Steps to purchase FASTag annual pass before August 15 Follow these steps to purchase your FASTag annual pass before the August 15 deadline. 1. Access the official platform: Download the Rajmarg Yatra application from Google Play Store or App Store or log in to the official NHAI/MoRTH portal using your registered mobile number or directly enter your vehicle's registration number and FASTag ID if not logged in.. These platforms will provide secure access to FASTag services. 2. Verify eligibility: The app or portal would run backend checks to determine whether the FASTag is active, appropriately attached, and linked to the correct vehicle registration. It also conducts a thorough check to ensure that the registered FASTag is not blacklisted. 3. Make payment: After the backend checks are completed, users would be provided with multiple FASTag recharge plans, from which they have to choose the annual pass option of ₹3,000. Users would be then redirected to payment options like UPI, debit/credit cards, or net banking from which they can opt for one according to their convenience. FASTag wallet balance cannot be used for paying the annual pass fee. 4. Linking of annual pass: Once the payment is successfully completed, the Annual Pass would be linked to the existing FASTag account and vehicle registration. 5. SMS confirmation: Users will finally be receiving a confirmation on SMS, that will notify them regarding their FASTag activation on August 15. Things to keep in mind regarding new FASTag annual pass: 1. According to Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), the annual pass is applicable only for private non-commercial Car/Jeep/Van and that its use in any commercial vehicle will result in immediate deactivation without a notice. 2. The annual pass is valid at all national highways and national expressways. At fee plazas on expressways, state highways etc, that is managed by state governments or local bodies, the FASTag will operate as a regular FASTag, and applicable user fee charges may apply. 3. IHMCL also says that the annual pass cannot be issued on FASTags registered only with a chassis number. The Vehicle Registration Number must be updated to activate the annual pass. 4. Users must note that the annual pass is not mandatory, and that they can choose to continue operating their FASTag in the regular manner, i.e. in regular transactions as per applicable user fee rates at fee plazas. 5. IHMCL denies the payment of ₹3,000 for the annual pass through the FASTag wallet balance. Users must pay the annual pass fee only through the payment options available in the Rajmargyatra App or the NHAI/MoRTH portal. The existing wallet balance can be used for State Highway tolls, parking, etc.
