CM Stalin to unveil TN's own education policy for schools today
The state government, which has consistently opposed the National Education Policy (NEP), had constituted a committee headed by retired Justice D Murugesan in April 2022 to draft SEP within a year. However, the deadline was later extended and the final policy was submitted to the government in July 2024.
School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi had earlier said that the SEP would be unveiled in two parts - one covering school education and the other higher education. However, the policy submitted to the government covers Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD), school education, and higher education.
Key recommendations of the committee include a curriculum to inculcate social equity and justice, strengthening of government schools over providing RTE funds to private institutions, retaining the existing school structure instead of adopting the NEP model, and continuing the two-language policy with a strong emphasis on Tamil.
The report also suggested reforms to the existing assessment system, stating that the open book tests should become the norm and recommended the appointment of physical education teachers from primary classes.
'The policy to be released on Friday is also expected to include provisions to introduce emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the school level and give importance to it,' said a senior official.

Bengaluru: The Kannada Development Authority has welcomed the State Education Policy recently submitted to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, describing it as a landmark framework that could reshape school and higher education over the next decade. The policy, chaired by former UGC chairman Prof. Sukhadeo Thorat, was prepared by a commission of eminent scholars and educationists over two years, holding 132 meetings and conducting extensive data-based studies of Karnataka's education landscape. 'This is the first time Karnataka has such a comprehensive and forward-looking State Education Policy. If fully implemented, it will radically transform our schools and universities and prepare our younger generation for the challenges of a modern society,' said Prof. Purushottama Bilimale, Chairperson of the Kannada Development Authority. Key recommendations include improving the quality of teaching and learning, ensuring equal opportunities and participation, revising curricula, textbooks and evaluation methods, addressing inequities caused by privatisation, filling teacher vacancies within three years, tackling funding shortages in higher education, and promoting constitutional, civic and human values from the school level. The policy also addresses the medium of instruction debate, long contentious in multilingual India. It recommends a bilingual approach with Kannada and English, while allowing communities to study their mother tongues as first languages. 'What makes this policy significant is its balance — it ensures Kannada remains central to education while respecting linguistic diversity. It is not exclusionary, and could serve as a model for the country,' Prof. Bilimale explained. Special measures have been proposed to set up language training centres, translation hubs, and strengthen Kannada under the 2015 Kannada Learning Act. The framework also acknowledges the rights of Urdu and other linguistic minorities to retain their languages while mandating Kannada as either a first or second language. Calling it 'a game-changer for Karnataka,' Prof. Bilimale urged the government to implement the recommendations fully rather than selectively. 'The comprehensive nature of this policy is its greatest strength. If the government acts decisively, Karnataka's education sector can emerge as a national model,' he said.

DHARMAPURI: Chief Minister M K Stalin on Sunday mounted a scathing attack on Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi, accusing him of doing "cheap politics" than the opposition and charged him with spreading canards against the ruling DMK and the party-led government. Listing out the various pro-people welfare initiatives of his government, he said Tamil Nadu has become a pioneer for the country in such schemes. The Dravidian model government is the one which shows direction to the country. "Some mischief mongers are unable to stand this and are making baseless allegations," he said. In his address at a government event here to mark the launch of social welfare initiatives, the CM said he was not concerned about what the opposition parties say, since "that is their politics." "There is someone doing cheaper politics than them, you know who it is. It is Governor R N Ravi, appointed by the Union BJP government. You know what he does from the Raj Bhavan--spread canards against the DMK government, against DMK. He will insult Dravidam, won't approve legislations (bills), will disrespect Tamil Thaai Vazhthu (Tamil anthem) and maligns TN students," the CM said. He charged Ravi with making unfounded allegations about TN education, law and order and women's safety, and "creating panic."

55cr allotted for VETRI schools
Chennai: Tamil Nadu govt has sanctioned 54.73 crore in the first phase to establish Vibrant Education Targeting Reputed Institutions (VETRI) schools to provide intensive coaching and career guidance counselling to students, helping them gain admissions to premier higher education institutes in the country. Designed like the model schools in the state, VETRI initiative would be implemented in 236 govt higher secondary schools. The initiative finds mention in the State Education Policy, wherein a high-performing govt higher secondary school would be identified per block and be provided with facilities akin to model schools. Model schools in each district will lend a helping hand to these VETRI schools by providing academic material and career guidance to students. Under the initiative, weekend support classes will be held for volunteering students of Classes XII and XII for competitive exams such as JEE, NEET, and CLAT, among others. Around 240 students across Classes XI and XII in every block would benefit, and the impact would reach around 1 lakh students. Why does the govt have to pick and choose schools for upgradation? The govt must uniformly raise the standard of education in all its schools," said L Jawahar Nesan, a former member of the high-level committee formed to frame the SEP. SPCSS-TN general secretary and educationist P B Prince Gajendra Babu echoed similar views. "The discrimination is grounded on the belief that the govt will not be able to provide all facilities for all students and only selected students will be able to achieve what they desire. Such branding of schools is also against Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution." However, school education secretary B Chandramohan said, "Though they will be named VETRI schools, they will be functioning as a hub in the particular block. Any student can enrol for the weekend coaching classes at these VETRI schools. This addresses the concerns of critics that the govt is providing facilities to only a section of schools."
