Michigan State football opener vs. Western Michigan moved to Friday, Aug. 29
EAST LANSING – It will be another Friday night, Labor Day weekend opener for Michigan State football.
Coach Jonathan Smith will kick off his second season at 7 p.m. on Aug. 29 against Western Michigan, the Big Ten announced Thursday, May 29. It will be broadcast on FS1, one of a number of early season games which the league released start times and broadcast information for heading into the fall.

The Spartans get a second straight night game at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, when they host Boston College (NBC), a return game for a road loss to the Eagles last season. MSU closes its three-game nonconference schedule at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 13 against Youngstown State of the Football Championship Subdivision (BTN).
Homecoming at MSU will be a noon kickoff Oct. 11 against UCLA, with TV to be determined. The Spartans also have the framework without broadcast information for two other games, with Oct. 4 at Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska, and the Oct. 18 trip to Indiana starting either at noon, 3:30 p.m. or 4 p.m. They will close the regular season Nov. 29 at Ford Field against Maryland, time and TV still to be determined.
The WMU game marks the 11th time in the last 15 seasons MSU has opened at home on the Friday of Labor Day weekend. Here is a look at the Spartans' 2025 schedule.

In his playing days, Provenzano was a standout at Simon Fraser University before spending a few years overseas playing professional basketball. Prior to joining Michigan State, where he obtained his masters degree, Provenzano spent two years with the London Basketball Academy and two seasons as the associate head coach with the London Lightning of the National Basketball League of Canada. Provenzano will now embark on his collegiate coaching journey, parlaying his graduate assistantship at MSU into an assistant coaching position with UTRGV, a division one mid major that is a member of the Southland Conference. Former Michigan State basketball star Malik Hall signs with professional team in Israel After a solid season in the NBA G League this past year, it appears Malik Hall is heading overseas to continue his professional basketball career. The former Michigan State Spartans has signed with a team from Israel's top division, according to a post shared by 247Sports' beat reporter Stephen Brooks. Hall played this past season with the Greensboro Swarm and Motor City Cruise of the NBA G League, where he had an impressive rookie season. Hall appeared in 22 games during the season, averaging 8.8 points and 4.3 rebounds across 22.9 minutes per game. Hall starred for the Spartans for five seasons from 2019 to 2025. During his time at Michigan State, he appeared in 153 games (64 starts) and averaged 8.2 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. He was one of the Spartans top players during his senior season, helping lead Michigan State to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Mississippi State Football sets standard with record GPA
Mississippi State's 2024 football season didn't go quite as planned. After a 2-10 record and going winless in SEC play, there is room for improvement. However, the Bulldogs pulled off a major win off the field. Jeff Lebby's program has enjoyed success with a record 3.05 GPA to end 2024. It was the second straight semester they've accomplished that feat after setting the record of 3.02 in Spring 2024. Not bad for a newcomer in his first year. Advertisement What might seem like a minor accomplishment to some is turning heads Starkville. Overall, Mississippi State's student-athletes achieved another record semester for Fall 2024. The Bulldogs posted the highest departmental GPA on record with a 3.34. It marked MSU's 15th consecutive semester with a 3.0 or higher, according to MSU athletics. What is expected for this year? Much the same for Lebby and the Bulldogs. Related: Chris Lemonis breaks silence after Mississippi State firing Ten Mississippi State football players from last year's team were named to the 2025 NFF Hampshire Honor Society last month. Nick Barr-Mira, Stone Blanton, Hayes Hammond, Zach Haynes, Grant Jackson, Jacoby Jackson, Kade Kolka, Ethan Miner, Blake Shapen and Seydou Traore all maintained a GPA of 3.2 or better. If the trend with Lebby continues, the Bulldogs could set another record in the classroom. They'll be looking to improve on the field as well, which starts with a difficult four-game non-conference schedule in the fall. MSU opens the 2025 season on the road against Southern Miss on Saturday, Aug. 30.
