CBS Sports names Ohio State duo as one of the top five in college football for 2025
A college football team is made up of 22 individual starters on both sides of the ball (not counting special teams), and all must play in concert, do their jobs, and work together for unity and success. But some players are superstars while others are more role players, trying to hold up their end of the bargain. When you can get a duo working together on the same side of the ball, it can be even more of a treat to watch as each feeds off of each other and creates issues for opposing defenses.
CBS Sports took a look at some of the best tandems in college football and tried to identify the top five heading into the 2025 college football season. Anytime we're talking about the best of the best in college football, there's a good chance Ohio State is a part of that equation, and that's the case as well with what Carter Bahns came up with.
It's no secret that the Buckeyes have had an embarrassment of riches at the wide receiver position over the past few years, and that looks to be the case again. In fact, that's exactly where Bahns went as one of the top five tandems in college football, highlighting Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate as a dynamic duo. He sees them as the third best duo in college football this season.
"Jeremiah Smith was arguably the best wide receiver in college football as a true freshman. Imagine what he can do with a full year of experience under his belt," Bahns wrote. "The Ohio State superstar enjoyed one of the most prolific freshman seasons the sport has seen in some time with his Big Ten-best 1,315 yards and 15 touchdowns, which more than delivered on the insane expectations he generated ahead of his Buckeyes debut. The only uncertainty around his 2025 ceiling stems from the quarterback spot, where a new starter will rise to the top of the depth chart, most likely in the form of Julian Sayin.
"The Ohio State receiving corps was far from a one-man show in last year's national championship run, though, and it will not be in 2025, either. Carnell Tate was a terrific third option in Year 2 with the program and looks poised to flirt with the 1,000-yard threshold himself as he picks up a greater share of the target load. After all, he managed to accumulate 733 yards in a room that featured high-volume weapons in Smith and Emeka Egbuka."
We couldn't agree more. There are ways to take one guy more or less away in a game plan at the receiver position by bracketing and shading coverage that way, but when you have another guy that's also a dangerous option, then he can often get the benefit of added attention. Look for Tate to benefit from all the traffic running Smith's way in 2025 and have a breakout campaign for the world to see.
So, who does Bahns have above Smith and Tate? No. 1 is the Penn State running back tandem of Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen, followed by linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. and defensive end Colin Simmons of Texas at No. 2. The other two tandems rounding out the top five are Clemson defensive linemen T.J. Parker and Peter Woods at No. 3, and quarterback Sam Leavitt and receiver Jordyn Tyson of Arizona State at No. 5.
We can't wait to see Ohio State unleash Tate alongside the proven commodity Smith brings this fall.

Texas OT recruiting target Felix Ojo issues statement after struggling at five-star camp
One of the Longhorns biggest (literally) recruiting targets is Mansfield, TX five-star offensive tackle Felix Ojo. The 6-foot-7, 279 pound lineman recently took an official visit to the 40 Acres, after cancelling an official visit to Oklahoma. Like many elite prospects, including recent Texas five-star DE commit Richard Wesley, Ojo is in Indianapolis this week for the Rivals Five-Star Challenge. The camp pits 100 of the best prospects in the nation against each other. During Monday's media day, Ojo spoke to Rivals about his tough commitment decision, which he says is between Ohio State and Texas. But a day later at the camp inside the Colts practice facility, Ojo struggled. Clip after clip were blasted all over social media of the Lake Ridge High School prospect floundering against the top defensive talent in the country, including Wesley. The negative buzz got so deafening, Ojo released a statement on social media. A player can have a bad day at a camp like this for many reasons. Ojo could have just needed a mechanical adjustment. But events like the Rivals all-star camp can also expose a prospect that has dominated in his high school district, but not against five-stars. Remember, if you're recruiting a five-star tackle, you expect him to be an anchor on your offensive line for at least two to three years. We'll have to wait and see if his performance in Indy was a side note on a good career or something more lasting. Follow us on X (formerly Twitter) at @LonghornsWire.

Incoming USC Edge Rusher Explains Why Trojans Won Over Ohio State, Penn State
Incoming USC Edge Rusher Explains Why Trojans Won Over Ohio State, Penn State originally appeared on Athlon Sports. USC rises to 30 verbal commitments thanks to Luke Wafle. Except the towering four-star turns down not one, but two Big Ten powers for the Trojans. Advertisement The 6-foot-6, 250-pound edge rusher chose USC over Ohio State and Penn State. Wafle looked prime to land at Ohio State per multiple recruiting outlets. However, USC managed to sway him 24 hours after he got projected to join the Buckeyes. The Nittany Lions were another contender earlier in June. Mainly due to older brother Owen Wafle landing there via the college football transfer portal. So why and how did USC win out in the very end? Wafle detailed his reasons with Tom Loy of 247Sports after choosing the Trojans. Former USC Trojans defensive lineman Bear Alexander (90).Darren Yamashita-Imagn Images "USC is poised for greatness, and I'm excited for the opportunity to join their journey for a national championship," Wafle told Loy. "Over the past several months, I've built a strong connection with the coaching staff and believe in them and their vision. I can't wait to get started and help bring home a title." Advertisement Wafle heads to the West Coast as the state of New Jersey's top-ranked prospect for the '26 class. He's fresh off delivering 53 tackles -- 18 coming behind the line of scrimmage. He also produced eight sacks. He's a rare east coast recruiting win for head coach Lincoln Riley and the Trojans coaching staff. Assistant defensive line coach Shaun Nua led the charge to land Wafle. Wafle becomes the eighth incoming defensive lineman prospect for USC. But he's USC's 20th recruit with a four-star rating. Advertisement Now he's teasing the possibility of joining a Big Ten rival of the Spartans -- while becoming the possible first 2027 commit for this powerhouse. Terry got captured by Rivals' Adam Gorney decked out in USC gear Saturday. Gorney shared a photo of Terry in the attire at the Thomas Graham 7-on-7 held at Rancho Cucamonga High. Terry is wearing USC sleeves, gloves and has a USC towel behind him. The Tustin High star already holds 32 different scholarship offers. The Trojans are among the schools making a run at him. There are already fans hoping he'd commit to USC after the photo got leaked out. Greg Biggins of 247Sports is one who likes his game already. Advertisement "Terry is hybrid safety who can cover and plays a physical game. He's a smart, instinctive defensive back and is always around the ball. He's a high football IQ player and looks to be 2-3 steps ahead of everyone else on the field," Biggins wrote in his evaluation of Terry. The national recruiting analyst adds that Terry got timed at 20.3 mph on the Catapult GPS during one game. He's fresh off delivering 52 total tackles, five behind the line of scrimmage, six pass breakups and four interceptions. USC still faces competition to land the Orange County talent Terry. Alabama is on his list of early offers. Defending national champion Ohio State also offered. Even Bill Belichick and North Carolina is making a run at Terry through their scholarship offer. Terry is already the state of California's 19th-ranked talent by 247Sports. The Trojans have rolled through the 2026 recruiting class in impressive fashion. USC just landed four-star defensive end Luke Wafle on Friday after spurning Ohio State and Penn State. USC sits at 30 total verbal commits for the 2026 class. But Terry can help set off the '27 group if the Trojans manage to win him over early.
