Kuwait handball team begins preparations for 10th Arab Cup
KUWAIT CITY, April 22: The Kuwait national handball team will begin its training at 6:00 pm at the Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Sports Complex in the Sabah Al-Salem suburb, as part of preparations for the 10th Arab Cup, which Kuwait will host from May 4 to 12, coinciding with International Handball Federation Week.
The team is now under the leadership of newly appointed Icelandic head coach Aron Kristjansson, supported by Danish assistant coach Ansen. Kristjansson has finalized a 24-player squad for the upcoming tournament.
Kuwait entered an internal training camp at the Radisson Blu Hotel, which will run through the duration of the tournament. The camp includes daily double training sessions—morning and evening—focusing on improving player fitness and refining both offensive and defensive tactics. Additionally, the program will include theoretical sessions to enhance players' tactical understanding.
As part of his preparation, Coach Kristjansson has attended several Premier League and First Division matches to evaluate player performance and finalize his squad selection.
The Arab Cup draw will take place on April 26, with nine teams set to participate: Kuwait (host), Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Iraq, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
The teams will be split into three groups, with matches played in a single round-robin format. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the quarterfinals.

Sancho reportedly set to leave Chelsea after loan spell LONDON: Bruno Fernandes has reportedly rejected a huge offer to leave Manchester United for the Saudi Pro League, opting to be part of Ruben Amorim's rebuild at Old Trafford. Reports said Al Hilal were willing to pay United up to £100 million ($135 million) for the 30-year-old Portugal international but had not made an official approach. United endured their worst finish of the Premier League era, finishing 15th. They also lost the Europa League final to Tottenham. United captain Fernandes was one of the few players to emerge with credit from a disastrous season, scoring 19 goals and making 19 assists across all competitions. The Athletic reported that the club and Sancho had failed to agree a deal and Chelsea must now pay a £5 million penalty charge to United. Chelsea finished fourth in the Premier League and won the UEFA Conference League, with Sancho scoring the third goal in last week's 4-1 win against Real Betis. But the England international has had an inconsistent season, scoring just five times and making 10 assists in 41 appearances for Chelsea. He scored just one Premier League goal after early December. LAFC qualify for Club World Cup with win over Club America
LOS ANGELES: Denis Bouanga grabbed a dramatic extra-time winner to send Los Angeles FC into the Club World Cup with a 2-1 (aet) win over Mexico's Club America on Saturday. The team from Mexico City looked to have booked their place - and the guaranteed $9.5 million participation reward - after a penalty from former LAFC player Brian Rodriguez in the 64th minute. But Brazilian Igor Jesus's 89th minute header for LAFC took the game into extra-time and five minutes from the end of the second period Bouanga drilled home the dramatic winner. It was a game with high stakes played in front of a boisterous crowd divided between the two teams and the tension was palpable from the outset. But it was the Californian club, who only began life in MLS seven years ago, who triumphed and earned a spot in the first edition of the expanded 32-team FIFA tournament. LAFC will line up in Group D of the Club World Cup, where they will face Premier League side Chelsea, Brazil's Flamengo and Esperance Tunis of Tunisia in the tournament which gets under way on June 14. The one-off 'play-in' match came about following FIFA's decision to ban Mexican club Leon from the tournament. Leon were barred because the club is owned by Grupo Pachuca, which also controls Liga MX side Pachuca, who are also taking part in the tournament. LAFC were given the chance on the basis of finishing as runners-up to Leon in the 2023 CONCACAF Champions League. America, founded 108 years ago, were handed the opportunity due to their status as the "top-ranked team" in confederation rankings. While LAFC had the nominal home field advantage, at their BMO Stadium, California is home to many Club America fans and the result was a de facto neutral venue. The atmosphere was electric but chances were rare in the opening half with the Mexican team enjoying the better possession but causing few problems for LA's former France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. But when Mark Delgado's challenge on Erick Sanchez in the box was ruled a foul, after a VAR review, substitute Rodriguez kept his cool and sent Lloris the wrong way to put America ahead. Rodriguez had a chance to secure the outcome 10 minutes later but he floated his shot wide. The introduction of former France and Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud in the 74th minute proved to be decisive, however, with the 38-year-old's presence causing plenty of problems for the America back line. Thundering header Giroud's improvised shot with the outside of his foot forced Luis Malagon into a save and moments later the Club America keeper kept out a header from the Frenchman. With just a minute of normal time remaining, LAFC grabbed a lifeline when a Bouanga corner was met with a thundering header from Jesus. LAFC almost won the game in regulation but Malagon did brilliantly to keep out a cross/shot from Timothy Tillman that was heading towards the top corner. Then it was extra-time and with penalties looming, Frankie Amaya fed a ball in to Giroud on the edge of the box who laid off to the on-rushing Bouanga whose fierce shot took a wicked deflection and flashed past the helpless Malagon. The France-born Gabon international has scored 80 goals for LA, in all competitions, since joining the club from Saint Etienne in 2022 but none more valuable than this one. The win ensures that the tournament host nation will have three competing teams from Major League Soccer with the Seattle Sounders and Inter Miami already in the competition. The tournament concludes with a final in MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 13 with the winner taking home over $100 million. – AFP

Whitecaps look to make history in CONCACAF final
MIAMI: The Vancouver Whitecaps are aiming to become the first Canadian club to win an international trophy when they face Mexican giants Cruz Azul in the final of the CONCACAF Champions Cup on Sunday. But if the team, which is enjoying an outstanding season under Danish coach Jesper Sorensen, is to make history they will have to defy the odds yet again. The two teams will clash at Cruz Azul's home venue, the Estadio Olímpico Universitario in Mexico City but it is not only home advantage that favors 'La Maquina'. Cruz Azul have a rich pedigree and can equal Mexican rivals Club America's record of seven CONCACAF titles with a victory on Sunday. They are part of an elite group of Mexican clubs who have dominated the tournament -- in both the Champions Cup and Champions League formats -- with 39 titles. Costa Rican clubs have six titles while MLS clubs from the USA have just three. The Whitecaps are just the third Canadian team to reach the final, following Toronto in 2018 and Montreal in 2015 and are now hoping to go one better. But they have earned their place after an impressive run in the competition which saw them beat Costa Rica's top club Saprissa, upset Mexico's Monterrey and Pumas and then outclassed Lionel Messi's Inter Miami to earn a 5-1 aggregate win. Victory would be the first major trophy for the Whitecaps since they entered Major League Soccer in 2011 although the original Whitecaps won the old North American Soccer League in 1979. The club has gradually built a formidable squad however which Sorensen has been able to capitalize on this season. 'Step by Step' 'We had to build this step by step,' Whitecaps CEO and Sporting Director, Axel Schuster, told website onesoccer. 'It takes time to build, because in MLS, you cannot change things quickly because of the roster rules that you have,' he added. 'Building in MLS takes a little bit longer, but we are feeling good about where we are right now, and I can tell you already, we are already thinking about the next step,' he added. Striker Brian White is enjoying an excellent campaign and was called into the USA national team by coach Mauricio Pochettino having scored 15 goals in 21 games this season. But while MLS presents its challenges, it is rare for a team to face the kind of raucous atmosphere that Vancouver can expect to be up against in Mexico City. Canadian international defender Sam Adekugbe is confident the team can cope, however. 'Mexico is a very difficult place to play, I've experienced that with the national team, but it'll be an intense game with a lot of quality, and obviously, the altitude is a big factor, as well, but all we can do is just focus on what got us there and take control of that,' he said. That task is made harder by the absence of influential midfielder Sebastian Berhalter who is suspended after picking up a yellow card against Miami, although the exciting Ecuadorian international Pedro Vite provides quality in midfield. Cruz Azul will be putting their faith in striker Angel Sepulveda who is the tournament's top scorer with seven goals and is ably supported by Poland's Mateusz Bogusz, who joined from Los Angeles FC in January.
