World Bicycle Day 2025: Your guide to a thrilling cycle ride in the rains

On June 3, Trichy-based ultra-marathoner and triathlete C S Siddharth has a special cycling activity planned. 'We are organising a city-wide Bicycle Treasure Hunt that blends adventure, fitness and the cause of sustainable transportation ," he says. Why June 3? To celebrate World Bicycle Day. While weather conditions, especially the early monsoon in Maharashtra, have made it difficult for regular riders to continue with their routine cycling, it hasn't entirely stopped them from doing what they love. Safety and preparedness, over speed and competition To celebrate the special day, numerous cycling groups and individuals plan to go pedalling on routes they love. Charvi Khurana, a Mumbai-based cyclist who loves midnight rides, plans to ride her bike on her usual Andheri to Colaba route. Citing the weather and road conditions, she says, 'Safety comes first whether it's monsoon or not. It's all about keeping dry and using the roads wisely, while wearing your safety gear of course.' Riding your bike in the monsoon is tricky. Siddharth shares, 'During the monsoons, balance your training between indoor and outdoor cycling. On a very heavy rain day, train indoors and when skies clear up, hit the wet roads with wider threaded tires on fender-equipped frames, and grippy shoes. I think these are most important for safety.' Charvi adds, 'Avoid roads that are slippery. Control and comfort are more important than speed in the rain.' image by Abhishek Tarfe of Velocrush India by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villa For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas in Dubai | Search ads Learn More Undo Of nostalgia and learning new things During cycling events in the monsoon, organisers prioritise preparedness and safety. These events are about having fun, remembering your childhood days and making memories,' says Abhishek Tarfe, Founder of Velocrush India. While childhood memories drive some, for others, cycling is a new learning experience. Vinod Pukhraj Choudhary, a Pune-based marathon runner and cycling enthusiast, often rides from Pune to Lonavala. He tells us, 'I started cycling just to try something new, but I quickly fell in love with it. There's something about being out on the road that feels incredibly freeing. It's not just about fitness anymore. It's a way of life. It helps me stay consistent with my routine and connects me with a like-minded community. It has become a part of who I am.' Rail users seek diversion of express trains on the new Karaikal-Peralam BG section

With the 23.5-km Karaikal -Peralam new broadgauge electrified section cleared for operation of passenger services, the Nagore Nagapattinam Rail Users' Association has requested the Southern Railway to operate the Karaikal-Tambaram-Karaikal express; Karaikal-Bengaluru-Karaikal and and Karaikal-Mumbai LTT-Karaikal express trains from Velankanni and run them via Nagapattinam, Nagore, Karaikal, Thirunallar and Peralam. The diversion of the three trains via Karaikal and Peralam by operating from Velankanni will connect Mayiladuthurai Junction directly and there would be no need for loco reversal either at Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur, association president S. Mohan said. The diversion of the three trains on the Karaikal-Peralam section would also reduce journey time. At present, the three trains are operated from Karaikal via Nagore, Nagapattinam. and Tiruvarur. In a representation to Chief Passenger Transportation Manager, Southern Railway, the association secretary M.M.A.A. Sithiq said the diversion of the three trains would provide a shorter route and urged the railway administration to introduce a daily day time inter-city express between Velankanni and Tambaram via Nagapattinam, Nagore, Karaikal, and Thirunallar. While thanking the railways for laying the broadgauge line with electrification from Karaikal to Peralam, the association expressed hope that the line would be opened for passenger services soon. Mr. Sithiq said Velankanni, Nagore and Thirunallar attract devotees in large numbers daily and have great potential for operation of train services. Introduction of Velankanni-Salem Express in the afternoon, introduction of a daily morning express train from Puducherry to Velankanni; extension of the Villupuram-Mayiladuthurai-Villupuram train up to Velankanni were among the other demands of the association.

Partial cancellation of train catches passengers off guard

1 2 Karur: Angry passengers on Tuesday got into an argument with staff at Karur railway station after the Erode-Trichy passenger train was partially cancelled and halted halfway due to track maintenance work near Pettavaithalai. Sources said the passengers, who alleged they were not notified in advance, confronted staff after the train did not proceed beyond Karur at 11am, an hour later than the estimated time of arrival (ETA). A railway official said a prior notification was issued.. "Around 8.30 pm on Monday, a notification was issued from Trichy, and another followed late at night from Salem," he said. Another train travelling in the opposite direction from Trichy to Palakkad was also partially cancelled, and instead started from Karur, he added. However, passengers blamed the authorities for issuing the notifications too late and accused station staff of inaction. They argued that they could have made alternate arrangements had they been informed at least by the time they boarded the train at Erode around 8 am. The passengers subsequently agreed to take the next available train, the Palakkad-Trichy train, at noon.
