The man was taken by ambulance to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley where staff describe his condition as serious but stable.
Detectives are now appealing for information.

Detective Constable Andrew Baldacci said: "Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident, how he came about his injuries and if any crime has taken place.
"I would urge anyone who was in this area on Saturday morning who witnessed anything important to our enquiry to please contact us. I would also ask any drivers with dash-cam or anyone with personal footage, to review it and please contact us if it holds anything relevant.
"Information can be passed to 101 quoting reference number 0329 of August 2."

Irvine man savagely beat partner of one month in Dumbarton
John McCulloch appeared from custody having previously admitted to repeatedly punching the woman to the head at her home in Dumbarton. Listed in court documents as living in Irvine but a prisoner in Greenock, the 42-year-old drove the woman to scream for help and thrash her feet to alert neighbours. The couple started a relationship on March 5 that ended with his attack, the court heard. On the evening of April 19, both were at the woman's home consuming alcohol into the early hours of the 20th. McCulloch began to accuse the woman of having sexual relations with a previous partner. When she left the room, he followed and punched her repeatedly to the face. The woman raised her hands to protect herself. She fell to the floor and he got on top of her, repeatedly punching her again. Her face was bruised significantly. The woman kicked at the floor to alert a downstairs neighbour while also shouting for help. A witness saw McCulloch holding her jumper with his left hand with his right raised in a fist. His partner's face was covered in blood. The witness asked the woman if she was okay and the attacker walked towards him, telling him to get out. She used the opportunity to escape and run downstairs. Police soon arrived and arrested McCulloch. When he was charged, he said: "I never done it." He was released on an undertaking to appear at court, and his now ex was taken by ambulance to the Royal Alexandra Hospital and then the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. She had tenderness to the neck and bruising. Days later, he called his ex on WhatsApp. They spoke for nearly an hour. She showed him the injuries he caused her, heard the court. The fiscal depute said McCulloch claimed it would never happen again. This angered his ex and she hung up. He tried to call back several times. Then he messaged that he was nearby her house. She knew he lived in Irvine so must have taken the train. The woman phoned police. He called her asking "where are you?" While officers where there, he messaged, "why phone the cops?" Police found him hiding under a tree in a park nearby. He told them: "I was not going to hurt her. I just wanted to come up and apologise. She called me. She invited me." McCulloch pleaded guilty to assaulting the woman to her injury. He further admitted breaking an undertaking not to contact the woman and repeatedly doing so between April 26 and 28. Both charges were aggravated by being against a partner or ex. His defence solicitor said her client had "remorse and shame" for his actions. There was a "significant alcohol misuse problem that he has experienced in the past". "He knows that doesn't excuse his behaviour but it's somewhat of an explanation," she said. "He has a record that does him no favours. "He had a brother and sister, both deceased, and he said grief has played a role in his decline and dependency on alcohol." McCulloch can't be put on the Caledonian Men's Programme to curb his domestic abuse. He has to tackle his alcohol use first. Sheriff Frances McCartney, noting there was a "powerful" victim impact statement, said: "This is an appalling example of domestic violence." She jailed him for a total of three years, backdated to April 28. When released, he will be supervised for a further 12 months. He must never contact the woman again, make any comments about her online, or enter her street in Dumbarton.
