'In 2002, we were handling about 700,000 tons of cargo through these facilities a year. And now, we're up to 9 million tons a year in handling, and what that has basically equated to: more jobs, more activities, more sub-contractors, more vendors and more support with the community,' said Associated Terminals and Turn Services Chairman Gary Poirrier.

Beto O'Rourke PAC donated more than $1 million to Democrats during redistricting battle

Former U.S. Rep. Beto O'Rourke announced on Saturday that his political group, Powered by People, donated more than $1 million to Texas Democrats during a special session in which they walked out to deny Republicans the quorum they needed to pass new congressional maps. In the announcement, O'Rourke said that 'more than 55,000 donations' poured in from people across the country since the start of the first special session called by Gov. Greg Abbott. The money from his political group benefited the Texas Legislative Black Caucus, the Texas House Democratic Caucus, and the Mexican American Legislative Caucus. Abbott's first special session, which ended Friday, didn't have a quorum for the past two weeks because most of the House's 62 Democrats left the state to prevent proposed redistricting aimed at securing more GOP seats in Congress. He immediately called a second special session. Last week, a Tarrant County District Judge Megan Fahey sided with Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, temporarily blocking Powered by People from fundraising for Democrats or financially supporting the quorum break. Paxton on Tuesday argued in a motion that O'Rourke had violated the temporary injunction. He asked the judge to imprison O'Rourke for the duration of the lawsuit, and to fine the Democrat $500 for each alleged violation of the injunction. O'Rourke filed his own lawsuit against Paxton earlier this month after being sued by the attorney general. He's asking a judge to block Paxton's investigation into Powered by People and alleges that he engaged in a 'fishing expedition, constitutional rights be damned.' In 2021, when Democrats broke quorum and left the state to prevent a bill that sought to tighten voting rules, which eventually became law, Powered by People donated around $600,000 to help pay for their expenses, including lodging, travel, and meals. That was before the House passed new rules in 2023 imposing a $500-per-day fine on lawmakers who leave the state during sessions and said they aren't allowed to use campaign funds to pay the penalties. El Paso judge blocks Ken Paxton from taking legal action against Beto O'Rourke's political group

An El Paso judge this week temporarily stopped Attorney General Ken Paxton from prosecuting former U.S. Rep. Beto O'Rourke's political group, Powered by People, after Paxton moved to block the organization from financially supporting Texas Democrats who left the state. Judge Annabell Perez of the 41st Judicial District Court issued a temporary restraining order Tuesday barring Paxton from prosecuting O'Rourke's nonprofit or otherwise initiating or filing legal proceedings aimed at revoking Powered by People's charter. The group has been fundraising for Texas Democrats who decamped to Illinois and other states in protest of a proposed GOP congressional map that would net Republicans up to five more seats in the U.S. House. Powered by People already donated $1 million to the Democrats, whose two-week absence denied the Texas House the minimum number of present members needed to conduct business. Many of those Democrats have since returned to the state, and Gov. Greg Abbott called a subsequent overtime legislative session after the first one ended last week. Paxton previously secured a temporary injunction blocking O'Rourke from fundraising for the Democrats or spending money to cover their expenses. He then sought to jail O'Rourke, arguing that the El Paso Democrat had violated the court order, which O'Rourke's attorneys have disputed. O'Rourke responded by filing his own lawsuit alleging that Paxton was engaging in a 'fishing expedition, constitutional rights be damned,' by targeting Powered by People. The group was a top funder covering the costs of Democrats' travel out of the state. The absconding members were on the hook for lodging, meals, travel and the $500-per-day fines accrued each day of the session they missed. The lower chamber is scheduled to take up the proposed map, ordered by President Donald Trump, on Wednesday. Democrats who have protested the maps say they are an attack on the voters of color who live in those districts. Meanwhile, Republicans say they are entitled to redraw the maps whenever they choose for partisan gain. In her order, Perez said it was imperative to 'prevent imminent, irreparable injury' but that it was not a ruling on the merits of the case. The order expires in two weeks. Texas Democrat seeks to force Epstein vote ahead of expected passage of new map

Texas Democrats are looking to put Republicans on defense ahead of the expected passage of a GOP-friendly map by putting an amendment to a vote concerning the Jeffrey Epstein files. Texas House Minority Leader Gene Wu (D) is introducing an amendment that would allow a new House map to take effect only after Attorney General Pam Bondi publicly releases files related to the disgraced financier. Wu's amendment says the maps won't be adopted until Bondi 'makes publicly available in a searchable and downloadable format all unclassified records, documents, communications, and investigative materials in the possession of the Department of Justice, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and United States Attorneys' Offices, that relate to Jeffrey Epstein.' The Texas House is convening at 11 am E.T., where the lower chamber is expected to pass a new House map that would allow Republicans to net five seats ahead of 2026. The Epstein files have been a thorn in President Trump's side, with both Republicans and Democrats calling for the release of more documents around Epstein, who pled guilty to several state charges in Florida pertaining to solicitation of prostitution. He also faced sex trafficking and conspiracy charges before he died in jail in 2019. Officials have determined Epstein died by suicide though there's been skepticism among the public regarding the actual cause of his death. Trump said on the campaign trail he would declassify documents around Epstein — a figure who the president has sought to distance himself from — though some, including among Trump's most loyal supporters have been upset over the administration's handling of the Epstein case. The Wall Street Journal reported that Bondi told Trump his name appeared in the Epstein documents, among other notable names, though that does not mean the president is guilty of any wrongdoing. But that hasn't stopped Democrats from putting pressure on Republicans over the issue. 'Trump is in those files, and that's why he's fighting to keep them hidden,' Wu alleged in a statement. 'At the same time he's demanding Abbott ram through racist maps, he's making sure Congressional Republicans block the release of files that could expose his decades-long relationship with a child sex trafficker,' he added. 'This amendment forces Republicans to choose between their loyalty to Trump and their obligation to expose sexual predators.'
