Centre vows no let-up in K-P terror fight
Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry on Thursday ruled out the possibility of launching any fresh military operation in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) amid rumours of a fresh full-scale offensive triggered by the worsening law and order situation in the volatile tribal districts of the province.
Chaudhry, however, said that the ongoing counterterrorism actions under the National Action Plan (NAP) would continue unabated. "Let me be clear — NAP operations will not be stopped by anyone, no matter who they are," he said while speaking on the floor of the National Assembly in response to concerns raised by MNAs Asad Qaiser and Shazia Marri.
Chaudhry's statement came on a day the PTI government in K-P strongly opposed the launch of a new military operation in the province, warning that kinetic actions would only worsen the already fragile security situation in the province. The provincial government called for a non-kinetic strategy to eliminate terrorism and restore peace.
Taking a swipe at the PTI, the minister questioned, "Who brought the TTP [Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan] back? Which chief minister said, 'We won't fight or we'll end up like the PPP or the ANP?'"
Commenting on PTI's protest on Youm-e-Istehsal-e-Kashmir, Chaudhry defended the closure of Parliament House's entry gates, citing security concerns due to Section 144 being in force and the presence of a sizeable rally near D-Chowk. He clarified that the gates were closed to restrict the incoming crowd and not the lawmakers. "No MNA was barred from exiting the premises," he added.
The minister played down the scale of PTI demonstrations on August 5. "In Islamabad, fewer than 100 people turned up and even those were briefly detained. No lawmakers were arrested," he claimed. "In Punjab, out of a population of 130 million, only 94 people were taken into custody. Most protests were symbolic and dispersed within minutes."
He also rejected the PTI's defence of the May 9 riots, saying popularity does not grant immunity from the law. "Those who attacked state properties were not acting in public interest - they did so in pursuit of future election tickets," he alleged. "Now they are facing the consequences. Courts in Punjab and Peshawar are announcing decisions. What more fairness do they want?"
On the issue of the suspension of overland travel for Shia pilgrims via Iran, Chaudhry said that the measure had been taken due to heightened regional tensions in the aftermath of the Israel-Iran conflict. He said the Ministry of Interior was engaged in talks with the protesters and the Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) leadership.
"A delegation of pilgrims met ministry officials last Thursday, and further discussions were held recently with MWM leader Raja Nasir Abbas," the minister said, adding that he was willing to visit Karachi to continue negotiations. He added that the Sindh and Balochistan governments were fully on board, while the Sindh governor remained in close contact with the protesters.
The minister further told the lawmakers in the House that the prime minister had instructed the defence minister to ensure facilitation of pilgrims via air travel. "We've increased the number of flights and engaged foreign airlines, including Iranian and Iraqi carriers, to enhance capacity. Talks are also under way to reduce fares," he added.

"Pakistan will truly attain the place in the world that it so desires after achieving fiscal stability," he noted, adding that the PML-N's performance and the economy would be the party's narrative for the upcoming elections. He said this was the third party meeting presided over by Nawaz Sharif that mainly focused on national issues. In response to a question about discussion on the 27th Amendment, Abbasi said nothing to this effect was discussed in this or any other meeting of the party.

"Attempts to dominate maritime spaces or marginalize coastal States must be rejected; they are counterproductive", Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, permanent representative of Pakistan, said in the high-level debate convened by Panama, which holds the Council's presidency for the month of August. "In some quarters," he added, "the seas are seen not as a shared domain, but as a stage for asserting primacy." Although the Pakistani envoy did not name any country, his comments about naval build-ups and attempts to dominate waterways were seen here as mainly directed at India. "The oceans connect us all," Ambassador Asim Iftikhar told delegates. "As a coastal State at the confluence of major sea lanes in the northern Arabian Sea, Pakistan accords the highest importance to a secure, rules-based maritime domaincritical to our national security, economic resilience, regional connectivity, and food and energy security."

Sadiq again offers to mediate govt-opp talks
National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq once again invited the opposition to sit across the table with the ruling alliance, assuring the opposition of his full cooperation in holding negotiations with the government and reaffirming his role as the "Custodian of the House." The NA speaker reiterated his offer months after the government-opposition talks failed, saying dialogue was the only way to resolve political differences. The speaker said that he would act as a bridge between the two sides to achieve this objective. Sadiq extended the invitation during a session of the National Assembly when opposition member and former speaker Asad Qaiser raised a matter regarding the opposition's privileges. He stated that the Constitution, the law, parliamentary traditions and rules were equal for all and their adherence was essential for strengthening democracy. An official statement from the NA secretariat, however, said that despite his offer, the opposition staged a walkout and left the house. Referring to the arrest of Indian Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi, Sadiq noted that even in that case, no "production orders" were issued. He emphasized that no forum was greater than the National Assembly and the Senate as a "Grand Jirga," and urged all political forces to come forward to strengthen Parliament. Previously, the negotiations between the two sides, which began on December 23, 2024, aimed to address political and economic challenges, had collapsed after just three sittings. PTI's demands were presented in the third round as a prerequisite for broader talks. However, PTI had called off negotiations within a week, claiming the government failed to meet its conditions of constituting judicial commissions within seven days. The government, on the other hand, had accused PTI of prematurely walking away from the process without awaiting a formal response "within seven working days". Later on, the PML-N-led ruling coalition had formally ended its negotiations with the opposition PTI after the opposition party had rejected Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's offer for resuming talks to settle long-standing issues between the two sides. The government had officially closed the door on negotiations with PTI following the opposition party's abrupt withdrawal from the dialogue process and linking further sittings with the formation of judicial commissions to probe May 9, 2023, and November 26, 2024, incidents. The confirmation had come from Senator Irfan Siddiqui, the spokesperson for the government's negotiation committee, expressing regret over PTI's decision and emphasizing that talks could have provided an opportunity for settling thorny issues had PTI continued the process. Senator Siddiqui had said that PTI specifically took names of PTI founder Imran Khan and other leaders, including Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Omar Cheema, Ijaz Chaudhry, Yasmin Rashid and Mahmood Rashid, and demanded their release, saying PTI did not write these names in its charter of demands but said that the government should facilitate their release.
