NEW DELHI: Indian fast bowler
Jasprit Bumrah
revealed he declined the Test captaincy role before
Shubman Gill
's appointment, citing workload management concerns for the upcoming five-match England series starting June 20 at Leeds. Despite being vice-captain and a frontrunner to replace
Rohit Sharma
, who stepped down in May, Bumrah chose to prioritise his bowling responsibilities over leadership duties.
The decision came after discussions with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) during the Indian Premier League regarding his availability for all Test matches.

"Before Rohit [Sharma] & Virat [Kohli] retired - During the IPL, I had spoken to BCCI, that I have discussed workload going forward in a five-match Test series, [and that] I have spoken to people who manage my back. We came to conclusion that we have to be little more smart, then I called the BCCI that I don't want to be looked at the leadership role because I won't be able to play all the Test matches," Bumrah told Sky Sports.
Bumrah further explained his decision to withdraw from consideration, emphasizing team interests.
"BCCI was looking at me as the leadership role, but I have to say no to them because it's not ideal when someone is leading for 3 Tests then some others have to lead rest of the tests so it's not fair for the team as I wanted to put team first," he said.

The decision aligns with the team's strategy to keep Bumrah, their primary fast bowler, in optimal condition for crucial matches in the England series and the World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle.
The five-match series will commence at Headingley, Leeds, marking India's first Test in the new World Test Championship cycle.

India's junior compound archers break U-21 world records, reach individual finals at Asia Cup Leg 2

Indian compound archers set two under-21 World records in the qualification round of the Asia Cup Leg-2 in Singapore on Tuesday. The women's team, comprising Shanmukhi Naga Sai, Tejal Salve and Tanishka Nilkumar, scored 2101 to better the previous mark of 2076 set by Indian archers two years ago. Shanmukhi and Kushal Dalal, who topped women's and men's individual rankings with 706 and 714 points respectively, totalled 1420 to help India rewrite the record (1419) held by the USA since last year. In the individual events, Indians made it to both the men's and women's finals. Top seed Kushal booked his place in the men's individual compound final after a solid 147-143 win over Himu Bachhar of Bangladesh in the semifinals, confirming at least a silver medal. Meanwhile, India's 10th seed Sachin Chechi lost his semifinal to Australia's Joshua Machon and will face Bachhar in the bronze medal match. In the women's individual compound section, India is assured of a gold and silver as top-seeded Shanmukhi and second seed Tejal Salve will clash in an all-Indian final. Shanmukhi defeated Indonesia's Yurike Nina Bonita Pereira 145-139 in the semifinals, while Tejal, who shot 700 in qualification, overcame Malaysia's Fatin Nurfatehah Mat Salleh 147-142 to set up the title clash. Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu sign up for US Open mixed doubles

Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu NEW YORK: Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu plan to team up in a star-studded and radically overhauled US Open mixed doubles competition set to include most of the top men's and women's singles players. Tournament organisers on Tuesday announced 16 pairings for the new-look format, with Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek all named on the entry list. US tennis chiefs announced sweeping changes to the mixed doubles earlier this year, unveiling plans to stage the competition as a standalone event in the week before the singles draws begin. — usopen (@usopen) The tournament will be made up of 16 teams, with eight teams earning direct entry based on their combined singles ranking playing alongside eight wild-card entrants. "Seeing the teams that have already put their names on the entry list makes us all incredibly excited," said Lew Sherr, the CEO and executive director of the United States Tennis Association. "It shows that the players are behind what we are trying to do, and we know that the fans will love it." Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka and Nick Kyrgios could also partner up, with Coco Gauff and Holger Rune the only two players missing from the top 10 in both the men's and women's singles rankings. The winning pair will share a prize of $1 million. But the decision to shake up the competition using an amended rulebook has attracted stinging criticism. Last year's US Open mixed doubles winners, Italian duo Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, initially lambasted the move, labelling it a "profound injustice". However, they were among the teams on the entry list.
