Shashi Tharoor May Keep 'Maunvrat' During Op Sindoor Debate. Rift With Cong or Strategic Silence?
Will Shashi Tharoor speak in Parliament during the Operation Sindoor, Pahalgam attack discussion? The Congress MP triggered more rumours by saying he will maintain 'maunvrat', or silence, in Parliament. As the Lok Sabha debates Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam terror attack, Tharoor, known for backing the Centre's muscular foreign policy, has chosen a vow of silence. Sources say the Congress high command reached out to him to speak, but he refused. Is it political defiance? Or a quiet protest against a party that's increasingly uncomfortable with his support for PM Modi's stand on Pakistan? Tharoor was earlier picked to lead an all-party delegation on Operation Sindoor and faced heat from within Congress ever since. His refusal to toe the party line, and praise for India's military, is adding to speculation about a growing rift.#shashitharoor #operationsindoor #maunvrat #congressrift #modiforeignpolicy #parliamentdebate #indiafirst #pahalgamattack #bjpvscongress #tharoorsilence #nationalsecurity #rahulgandhi #pmmodi #indianpolitics #toi #toibharat #bharat #trending #breakingnews #indianews

Ahead of Bihar polls, BPCC working president Ashok Kumar switches to JD(U)

PATNA: In a major setback to the Congress ahead of the state assembly election, six-time MLA and Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee (BPCC) working president Dr Ashok Kumar(Ram) resigned from the party and joined Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United) at a function held in Patna on Sunday. Ram, an influential Dalit leader from the Darbhanga region, was inducted into the JD(U) by the party's working president Sanjay Kumar Jha in the presence of senior leaders, including Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary and state president Umesh Kushwaha. Ashok's son Atirek, along with several supporters, also joined JD(U). Speaking on the occasion, Sanjay Jha said the JD(U) would welcome all leaders who wanted to strengthen the hands of Chief Minister and JD(U) national president Nitish Kumar in the upcoming assembly elections. 'Several other leaders of the opposition Grand Alliance are in touch with us,' he claimed. JD(U) state president Umesh Kushwaha also welcomed Ram into the party and expressed confidence that his joining would ensure the ruling alliance's victory in the upcoming assembly election, due in October-November this year. 'Ram decided to join JD(U) after being influenced by the party's policies and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's leadership,' he added.

ECI's neutrality questionable; Opposition wants discussion in Parliament: Gaurav Gogoi

Senior Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday (August 3, 2025) alleged that the neutrality of the Election Commission is questionable, which is why the Opposition parties want a discussion on the revision of the voter list in Parliament. Also Read | SIR exercise is 'an insult to migrant workers and gross interference in right of electorate in T.N.': Chidambaram Speaking to reporters before the start of the Extended Executive Meeting of the Assam unit of the Congress, Mr. Gogoi, who is also the deputy leader of the party in Lok Sabha, questioned the BJP-led central government's decision not to allow a discussion on the ECI even though the Chief Election Commissioner is appointed by it. "Today, there is a question mark in the minds of the people regarding the neutrality of the EC. That is why we want a discussion in Parliament. The government is trying to hide something. What is it? Is it their manipulation in the last assembly polls and Lok Sabha election?" the Assam Congress chief asked. 'The common people should know the status of their voting rights and details of polling stations. We want a discussion on this, but the government is saying they cannot discuss the matter.' said Mr. Gogoi "Their logic is that the Election Commission is not related to any department. This is an absurd logic because the Chief Election Commissioner is appointed by the PM and government," he added. Mr. Gogoi also claimed that there have been instances of electors visiting a polling station during voting, coming to know that their names are missing from the list. Speaking about Operation Sindoor, the Congress MP said, "The Union Home Minister did not even give minimum respect to the deceased of the Pahalgam terror attack. People died because of intelligence failure of the agencies under his ministry, but they did not apologise to the people. That's their nature." The Extended Executive Meeting of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee began here on Sunday morning. All party MPs, MLAs and senior leaders of the state unit participated in it. In the meeting, the strategy for the upcoming Assembly elections in the State will be discussed threadbare, an official said. Assembly elections in Assam for 126 seats are likely in March-April next year. "The meeting will adopt two resolutions. One will be political and the other will be economic. These will be prepared keeping in mind the upcoming assembly polls," the party official said.

BRS rift resurfaces as MLC Kavitha alleges internal conspiracy behind remarks against her

Telangana Jagruti president and MLC K Kavitha on Sunday alleged that a senior party leader was behind the "inappropriate remarks" made against her, bringing "internal rifts" within the BRS back into focus. While she did not specify the nature of the comments, Kavitha said the silence of her party colleagues over the issue was telling. "The whole of Telangana felt bad when inappropriate remarks were made against me, a daughter of this state. Many people reacted. But, for some reason, my brothers in the BRS remained silent. We need to question why," she told reporters here. Kavitha claimed she had specific information that a senior leader within the party was responsible for instigating the remarks. "These conspirators think they can plant people among my supporters and gather information about me. But they should know—I, too, know what's happening inside the party," she added. "I know whom you met, whom you encouraged to speak against me, and how low you stooped to target a woman. I'm watching it all," she claimed. The BRS leader, who is the daughter of party president K Chandrasekhar Rao, said she "believes in karma" and warned that those targeting her "would eventually face consequences." She also aimed at a "Lilliput leader" in the BRS, accusing him of damaging the party's prospects in Nalgonda district and of making "disparaging comments" about her. "What stature does any leader in BRS have without KCR? It was KCR who introduced all of us to the people," she claimed. Factionalism in the BRS came into public view earlier in May when Kavitha expressed dismay over the leak of a letter she had written to her father and party chief. At the time, she had said that conspiracies were at play within the party and likened "KCR to a god surrounded by devils." Her brother and BRS working president K T Rama Rao had then responded by stating that "internal party issues should be addressed within the party forum and not aired in public." Since then, Kavitha has continued political activities under Telangana Jagruti, a cultural outfit she heads. Meanwhile, on Sunday, she demanded that the Congress government in Telangana grant permission for a proposed 72-hour hunger strike from August 4. She said the protest is intended to pressure both the state government and the NDA-led Centre to approve the backward class reservation bills passed by the Telangana Assembly in March, which propose a 42 per cent quota for backward communities.
