Three children locked inside 'house of horrors' for years are rescued by Spanish police
Officers said they arrested a 53-year-old German man and a 48-year-old American woman in Oviedo, northeast Spain, on Monday.
The three children - two eight-year-old twins and a 10-year-old - have been taken for medical evaluation and are now in government custody at a juvenile centre, according to Spanish outlet El Comercio.
Another Spanish outlet, ABC, reported that the parents had been charged with domestic violence, habitual psychological abuse, and child abandonment.
It added that the parents were being held in pretrial detention without bail.
El Comercio reported that an investigation was launched after a neighbour complained on 14 April about children who lived in the home not attending school.
Spanish outlet El Mundo added that other locals told police they had not seen anyone enter or leave the property since December 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
It reported that when officers went to the property during the power outages in Spain and Portugal, the mother told officers to "be careful" since her children were "very sick".
Officers told the outlet that the home was filled with rubbish and a large number of medications and masks, and that the children did not appear to have any illnesses.
The three children were also reported to be sleeping in cribs, which officers said were defaced with drawings of monsters and dolls.
One agent told El Mundo: "The children were in terrible shape. It was absolutely outrageous. Not malnourished, because they were fed.
"But they were also dirty… [and] completely cut off from reality, and not just because they didn't go to school. When we took them out of the house, into the garden, where they wouldn't even go outside, they saw a snail and went crazy, freaked out."
"We have given three children back their lives," he said, according to El Comercio.

Richardson, a naturalised US citizen, was arrested in Texas last month. 'There's a good reason that there's a $5 million reward for information leading to Cherizier's arrest,' US Attorney Jeanine Pirro said. 'He's a gang leader responsible for heinous human rights abuses, including violence against American citizens in Haiti.' Cherizier, who leads the G9 Family and Allies alliance of heavily armed gangs, is accused of running a reign of terror across the Haitian capital. His street name is said to stem from his alleged penchant for setting fire to rivals' homes while the occupants are still inside. He maintains it comes from his mother's grilled chicken stand. In one of the most notorious incidents linked to his rule, 70 people were killed in 2018 when he allegedly torched 400 houses in La Saline, a densely populated neighbourhood in Port-au-Prince. The US Treasury Department placed him under sanctions in 2020, with the United Nations following suit in 2022. The gangs under his command are accused of murder, robbery, extortion, rape, targeted assassinations, drug trafficking, and kidnappings. According to US prosecutors, Cherizier and Richardson raised funds from Haitians living in America, funnelling the money through intermediaries in Haiti to pay gang members' wages and buy firearms. The G9 alliance played a key role in an organised assault last year that ultimately forced Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry from office, prompting the creation of a transitional council to take his place. 'Cherizier and (Richardson) sought to raise funds in the United States to bankroll Cherizier's violent criminal enterprise, which is driving a security crisis in Haiti,' said Assistant Attorney General John Eisenberg. 'The National Security Division does not tolerate criminal gang fundraising in the United States, and will continue to pursue those who enable Haiti's violence and instability.' Haiti remains the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. The United Nations estimates that at least 3,141 people were killed in the first half of this year alone, despite the arrival of a Kenyan-led multinational security force to support the country's police. Much of the capital remains under the control of armed gangs, leaving ordinary Haitians trapped in a cycle of violence, fear, and lawlessness.

Ex-Ibiza worker claims British tourists are overcharged by simple yet common scam
The former fast food worker reveals a shocking tale of deceit and mistreatment of UK tourists. An ex-staff member at an Ibiza fast food restaurant has claimed British tourists are conned out of money using an easy and widespread scam. The woman, who asked to remain anonymous, said she was ordered to charge tourists more than locals when she worked at the fast food franchise in Ibiza's party resort San Antonio. The female has reportedly lodged a formal complaint alleging malpractice by the Spanish eaterie, which has not yet been named. The Daily Mail reports the restaurant is on the resort's Doctor Fleming Avenue. and the claims come just days after a UK tourist was left fighting for his life after being knocked down in San Antonio. The former employee claims that senior staff members mistreated or threatened employees who refused to follow bosses' orders to charge travellers more or upgrade their meals to larger sizes, reports the Express. Speaking to Ibiza newspaper Periodico de Ibiza, she said: "Workers were instructed to charge for more expensive products. "For example, if a customer, generally British tourists staying in the area, asked for a hamburger with cheese, employees were told to serve them an XL hamburger with cheese and add several extras, like extra hamburgers, extra cheese, XL chips or other products they hadn't asked for. "We had to do it without them realising." She went on to say: "I didn't want to form part of that. I didn't want customers getting annoyed with me over that." The former employee at the fast food eatery said she was sacked halfway through her shift for refusing to overcharge customers. She said: 'They made me sign papers that said I hadn't passed my trial period. She also alleged the franchise owner had refused to accept a work uniform when she went to return it, saying one of them had grease stains on it. Defending her decision to speak out and alleging staff were mistreated in other ways, like being made to mop the floor with their bare hands by abusive bosses, she said: 'The most important thing for me is to make the situation public, for former colleagues who have to carry on enduring this inhumane treatment.' Dundee-born ice hockey star Gary Kelly, 19, became the fourth holidaymaker to die at four-star Ibiza Rocks Hotel since April 27 when he fell from a third-floor balcony on July 21 in an incident which the Civil Guard has described as an accident. On July 7 Ewan Thomson, 26, from Aberdeen, fell to his death at the same hotel, with his sister Teila claiming afterwards: 'Once it did happen, the hotel's response was just completely heartbreaking; almost as if it never happened.' A 19-year-old Italian tourist of Turkish origin plunged to her death on April 27 from a fourth-floor at the hotel, owned by the Ibiza Rocks Group which is led by the British founders of island super club Manumission. In the early hours of yesterday morning a British holidaymaker was left fighting for his life after being run over in Doctor Fleming Avenue. Ibiza and its neighbouring island, Majorca, have been the centre of anti-mass tourism protests over the past couple of summers.

Thomas Partey: Villarreal chief speaks out after ex-Arsenal star booed amid rape charges
Villarreal's president has leapt to the defence of Thomas Partey after the ex-Arsenal star was booed - claiming the midfielder deserves the right to a trial before any judgement is passed Villarreal president Fernando Roig has leapt to the defence of Thomas Partey and urged people to "not judge prematurely" after he was booed during the club's pre-season friendly against Aston Villa. The ex- Arsenal midfielder made the move to the Spanish side earlier this month and the game at the weekend was his first for his new club. Partey arrives in La Liga as he stands accused of five counts of rape against two women and one count of sexual assault against a third woman - charges which came just days after his contract at the Emirates expired. Partey has previously denied all the charges against him. He appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court last week to face the charges before being granted conditional bail. His bail conditions meant he cannot contact the three women involved and must notify police of any permanent changes of address or international travel. After his appearance in court the Ghanaian was able to complete his move to Villarreal, but it has courted controversy ever since and jeers rang out at the weekend, but Roig claims that was not from the home fans, only the away following. He said after their 2-0 loss to Villa: "The player is currently undergoing legal proceedings. He maintains his innocence and denies the charges against him. "The club upholds the presumption of innocence, and it will be the responsibility of the English courts to clarify the facts. We have spent years demonstrating our values with all kinds of activities. We respect the presumption of innocence and, of course, condemn any type of violence, whether inside or outside of football. At this moment, Partey is as innocent as the rest of us here. A fundamental right like this must be respected.' Roig was pressed on the boos that were directed at his players but added: "The English [Aston Villa fans] whistled Partey. Not the Villarreal fans. "I wouldn't like our own fans to whistle at players on our team. We must stand with the team and respect the presumption of innocence. He is not a convicted player. We must be cautious and wait for justice. Let's not judge prematurely. Thomas has the right to do his job until there is a conviction." Partey will defend himself in court in London next month, Arsenal have come under fire in the wake of his rape charges. However Mikel Arteta has come out and maintained the club acted appropriately. He said he was "100 percent" confident the club followed all the right processes.
