Communications Ministry reviewing user identity verification measures to protect children
Its Minister, Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said these measures are important to protect children from becoming victims of online sexual predators.
He also expressed concern over the incident of a social media influencer who allegedly sent lewd pictures to a 14-year-old girl.
'I am concerned with what happened recently, where an influencer had contacted a 14-year-old with obscene messages and this is something that is happening in our society.
'I am very worried because young children may not know and do not understand the use of social media. They look up to influencers but it seems that some of these influencers are allegedly taking advantage of them... this is something I'm disappointed with,' he said after the ministry's monthly gathering here today.
It was previously reported that police are carrying out further investigations regarding the case involving the social media influencer who allegedly sent obscene messages to several individuals, including minors.
Meanwhile, Fahmi advised the ministry's staff to deactivate the social media accounts of their children aged below 13 to avoid any untoward incidents, besides controlling their children's use of the WhatsApp application.
Fahmi also said that the ministry had played a crucial role in the ongoing 46th ASEAN Summit, particularly in ensuring good internet access and coverage.
'I have seen firsthand our efforts to ensure that internet access, including 5G, at the International Media Centre is in excellent condition, although some media outlets have said there are wifi problems and that it is not under our control, but after hearing this we will continue to help.
'We assist by asking the relevant parties to increase the number of access points to facilitate the media personnel,' he said.
At the event, Fahmi also officiated the new name of the Ministry of Communications building from Kompleks Kementerian Komunikasi to Menara Komunikasi as a symbol of connectivity, technological strength, and the nation's aspiration towards progress in the field of communications.
Also present were Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching, ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa and Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin.

All Malaysians urged to proudly fly the Jalur Gemilang
MUAR: The month-long National Day and flag-flying tradition is not just for symbolic purposes but showcases the strong spirit of unity among Malaysians, says the Communications Minister. Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said for the past 68 years since independence, this togetherness formed through the Federal Constitution has ensured the nation's peace and stability. As such, he urged everyone to proudly fly the Jalur Gemilang be it at their homes, vehicles, offices or schools. Fahmi, who is the National Day and Malaysia Day main committee chairman, urged the people to also join in the 1 Rumah 1 Jalur Gemilang campaign to boost their spirit of patriotism. He was speaking at the launch of the 2025 National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign at Dataran Tanjung Emas here yesterday, marking the beginning of the nationwide celebration of patriotism and unity. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim later flagged off the 2025 Jalur Gemilang Merdeka Expedition Convoy, which will travel across the country carrying the message of unity and patriotism. Fahmi said each year, different ways were used to instil patriotism among the people, adding that Muar was chosen for the launch due to its historic significance dating back to the Portuguese invasion of Melaka in 1511. 'This place was also known as Fortaleza de Muar or Bentayan Fort which protected Muar from the enemy due to its strategic location,' he added. Anwar said that the national day should not be limited to gaining independence from colonial powers but must also include the liberation of the people's minds and understanding. 'Merdeka is not just about breaking free from the British, but also liberating our way of thinking. 'We must rekindle the spirit of liberation and uplift the dignity of our people and our nation,' he said.

Dismissive attitude towards Borneo Bloc led to political shift: Hajiji
Published on: Monday, July 28, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 28, 2025 By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor ( pic ) said the lack of respect shown towards the Borneo Bloc by the previous federal leadership prompted him to reconsider his political alignment. He recalled a meeting in Kuala Lumpur with Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun and Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan where a senior federal leader dismissed the idea of a united Sabah and Sarawak voice. According to Hajiji, the leader's comment, declaring himself as 'the Master,' signalled a clear disregard for the Borneo Bloc's aspirations and Sabah's role in shaping its future. Speaking during the Gagasan Rakyat AGM on Sunday, Hajiji, who is also Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Chairman and Gagasan Rakyat President, said the incident led to deep reflection and eventually convinced him that change was needed for the sake of Sabah. He said the Unity Government under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had taken Sabah's longstanding concerns seriously, particularly those related to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). Hajiji stressed that GRS backs the current government because it respects Sabah's dignity and has begun to deliver on long-overdue commitments such as the devolution of powers. He confirmed he would join Anwar during his visit to Sabah today, with cross-border cooperation and regional concerns in the Sulawesi Sea expected to be among the key matters discussed. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
