Missing after boats collide

By: Azmie Lim Text Size: Fire and Rescue dept carriying out SAR. SEMPORNA: A man in his 40s has been reported missing while fishing off water near Balimbang jetty, Pulau Bum Bum, here, on Saturday. The man, identified as Balsiti Utumani disappeared when the wooden boat he boarded in with his friend was hit by another boat. According to the witness, the crash knocked them off into the water and during the incident, he could not see Balsiti. He also failed to recognized the boat that crashed into their boat due to darkness. The man was discovered by a passing boat and sent home to Kampung Halo, Semporna. He then received treatment at Semporna Hospital and was allowed to return home at 8am. The Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson said the department received a distress call from the Police following the incident at 6.15am and deployed a team of Fire and Rescue personnel to the scene. The team was informed that a man was feared missing after he went fishing at about 4am on Saturday. 'A Search and Rescue (SAR) operation was launched with the other agencies within a three-kilometre radius. Police to review nearby CCTV footage in break-in at Dr Mahathir's grandson's home

Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said the CCTV system at the residence itself was of limited use as it only retains footage for 24 hours, making it difficult to aid in the ongoing investigation. 'The CCTV system at the house was installed in the 1990s and has limited storage capacity,' he told a press conference today. "The incident is believed to have occurred more than 24 hours after the police report was made by the owner of the house, which meant the footage had already been overwritten,' he told a press conference here today. According to Mohamed Usuf, the house is an old house that is rarely visited by Dr Mahathir's grandchildren. "So far, the police have recorded statements from three individuals, namely Dr Mahathir's grandson, a security guard and a maid. The police are also analysing the evidence received, including fingerprints, and this may take some time," he said. According to reports, the residence belonging to the former Prime Minister's grandson was broken into, resulting in the victim losing RM1.8 million worth of jewellery. It is understood that the incident was discovered by the maid at 3 pm last Wednesday after she found the gate at the back of the house had been cut and her employer's room was ransacked. Bank officer loses RM241,700 to online vehicle scam
KUALA TERENGGANU: A bank officer lost RM241,700 after falling victim to an online vehicle scam while attempting to purchase a four-wheel drive. Kuala Terengganu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor said the 52-year-old victim lodged a report at the district police station at 9.37am yesterday. He said on July 4, at 12.30pm, the victim came across a used car advertisement on Facebook by a company allegedly based in West Port, Port Klang, Selangor. "The victim was interested in buying a 2017 Toyota Hilux 2.4. He clicked on the link, which redirected him to WhatsApp, supposedly for the next step in the purchase," he said. The man was then contacted by an individual who requested a copy of his identity card and several payments to proceed with the transaction. Between July 9 and 21, the victim made 40 transactions to 18 different bank accounts, amounting to RM241,700. Azli said the scammer later demanded an additional RM31,000, claiming it was for customs fingerprint verification. "This led the victim to suspect he had been duped, and he stopped further payments," he said. The four-wheel drive was never delivered. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Russia's night attack on Kyiv leaves eight injured, including child, Ukraine says
KYIV (Reuters) -A Russian overnight air attack on Kyiv wounded eight residents of an apartment building, including a three-year-old child, authorities in the Ukrainian capital said on Monday. Four of those injured in the attack, which took place soon after midnight on Monday, have been hospitalised, with one person in serious condition, the head of Kyiv's military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, said on the Telegram messaging app. Kyiv's Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that all of the people were residents of a multi-storey apartment building in the city's Darnytskyi district on the left bank of the Dnipro River. "The blast wave damaged windows from the 6th to the 11th floor," Klitschko said in a post on Telegram. The capital and most of Ukraine were under air raid alerts for several hours overnight following Ukrainian Air Force warnings of Russian missile and drone attacks. With the threat of missile strikes on western parts of Ukraine that border Poland - a NATO member - Polish armed forces scrambled aircraft to ensure the safety of Polish airspace. The central Ukrainian city of Kropyvnytskyi came under an attack, regional Governor Andriy Raikovych said, adding that emergency services were working on the site and information about potential damage will be released later on Monday. The full scale of the Russian attack on Ukraine was not immediately known. Reuters' witnesses heard loud blasts shaking the city of Kyiv overnight in what sounded like air defence units in operation. There was no comment from Russia on the attack. Both sides deny targeting civilians in their strikes in the war that Russia started in February 2022.
