MP Demands Action Following Death of Moroccan Man by Policeman's Chokehold in Spain

Morocco World6 days ago
Rabat — Moroccan Member of Parliament Naima El Fethaoui has submitted a formal question to Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita regarding the death of the 35-year-old Moroccan man, Abderrahim Akkouh, in Spain.
The case dates back to June 17, when an off-duty Spanish police officer restrained Akkouh using a controversial chokehold in Torrejón de Ardoz, near Madrid.
The Moroccan Parliament member described the case as 'dramatic' and called on the Moroccan government to ensure legal and moral support for Abderrahim's family.
El Fethaoui also urged the ministry to take strong diplomatic steps to protect Moroccan citizens living in Spain from racist police abuse.
The incident's background
According to witnesses, the officer chased Abderrahim, forced him to the ground, and applied the 'mataleón' chokehold — a rear-naked strangle move criticized for its risk of asphyxiation.
Ignoring pleas from onlookers to stop, the officer reportedly maintained pressure on Abderrahim's neck while shouting for someone to call the police. Emergency services found Abderrahim unconscious upon arrival and were unable to revive him.
The footage of the incident went viral, leading to a protest on June 21 in Plaza de España, where dozens of Moroccans and Spaniards gathered. Holding photos of the victim, demonstrators chanted for justice.
Abderrahim's family, devastated and tearful, demanded accountability. His father, Mimoun Akkouh, expressed sorrow in Spanish media: 'If he stole a phone, arrest him, try him — but don't kill him.'
The officer, identified as Juan José, 58, was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter but later released on conditional bail.
The decision has drawn sharp criticism from civil society groups and anti-racism organizations, who say the act was not accidental but a clear case of excessive force.
The incident, witnessed and filmed by bystanders, has sparked outrage among the Moroccan community in Spain and prompted calls for justice from rights groups and lawmakers.
Human rights groups, including SOS Racismo and Corridor en Lucha, have demanded a transparent investigation and the formation of a support committee to honor Abderrahim's memory and defend others affected by institutional violence.
The tragedy has reignited concerns about systemic racism within Spanish police forces, especially toward migrants and ethnic minorities. Activists and lawmakers alike are calling for deep reforms and greater accountability. Tags: Moroccan man death in spainMorocco spainNasser Bourita

Moroccan authorities intercept 4 tons of cannabis at Tanger Med port

In the early hours of Sunday, officers from the National Security and Customs at the Tanger Med port successfully intercepted an attempt to smuggle 4.374 tons of cannabis resin hidden aboard an international freight truck. The coordinated efforts of the National Security and Customs services resulted in the confiscation of this large drug haul. The cannabis resin was cleverly concealed within a shipment of fruits carried by a trailer attached to a Moroccan-registered truck, en route to a European port, as reported by a security source from MAP. The truck driver, a 51-year-old Moroccan national, is now under judicial investigation as ordered by the competent prosecutor. The investigation aims to uncover the details surrounding this operation and to trace both the national and international networks involved in this criminal enterprise.

Moroccan MP urges protection for journalist Mohamed El Bakkali detained by Israeli authorities

Last night, Fatima Tamni, a member of the Federation of the Democratic Left (FDG), issued a written appeal to Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita, urging him to take action to «protect Moroccan citizen Mohamed El-Bakkali, who is currently detained by Israeli occupation forces». The parliamentarian highlighted the interception of the ship «Handala» by Israeli forces in international Mediterranean waters, describing it as a «dangerous and unprecedented incident». Yesterday evening, a Moroccan journalist working for Al Jazeera sounded the alarm about an impending Israeli assault on the humanitarian vessel «Handala». Back in June, the Israeli military had already intercepted a humanitarian ship destined for Gaza in international waters, which included French MEP Rima Hassan among its passengers. Yesterday, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) called for the protection of Mohamed El Bakkali and American cameraman Waad Mohamed Salim Al Taii, both onboard the «Handala».

Over 80 Irregular Immigrants Swim to Ceuta in Summer's Largest Irregular Migration Wave

Rabat — More than 80 people swam to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on Saturday in the largest irregular immigration wave of the summer. The group included at least 50 Moroccan and Palestinian minors who braved dangerous sea conditions marked by strong swells and thick coastal fog. Spanish media outlet El Faro de Ceuta reported that rescue operations stretched from Friday afternoon through Saturday night. Spanish maritime units and divers from the Civil Guard's Special Underwater Activities Group (GEAS) worked intensively to save lives in the treacherous waters. The news outlet indicated that official reports confirm that rescuers saved 54 minors and around 30 adults. Most swimmers are reportedly Moroccan, with several Palestinians among them. Children scatter through city streets Despite increased security measures, several minors managed to slip away into different neighborhoods of Ceuta. This suggests the actual number of arrivals may exceed official figures released by authorities. Local authorities immediately transferred the rescued children to temporary reception centers. They also called on the central government to provide emergency assistance to handle the influx. August brings annual migration surge August typically sees a spike in migration attempts to the Ceuta enclave each year, with structural and situational factors driving this pattern, including poverty and unemployment in the region. This time, migrants took advantage of the dense fog that affects Morocco's northern coasts during this period, reducing the effectiveness of maritime radars and making irregular crossings easier to attempt undetected. Morocco's efforts to counter irregular immigration In response to the pressuring irregular immigration challenges across its borders, Morocco succeeded in preventing a total of 78,685 attempts in 2024. The North African country has shown firm response to the growing number of irregular immigration and related practices. Moroccan authorities dismantled 332 human trafficking networks during the same year, defying these groups' collaborative criminal operations. Most intercepted migrants came from West Africa, accounting for 58% of the total, while migrants from the Maghreb represented 12%, and 9% came from East and Central African countries.
