BEL share price: Defence stock edges lower after Q1 results 2025. Opportunity to buy?

Mint4 days ago
Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) share price fell as much as 2 per cent to ₹ 381.35 apiece in Tuesday's trading session despite posting strong quarterly results on Monday, July 28.
BEL shares opened at ₹ 389.95 on Tuesday, as compared to previous close of ₹ 389.25. At 9:20 am, the PSU stock touched an intraday low to ₹ 380.30 per share on July 29.
The PSU stock has declined over 9 per cent in a month, however, has gained nearly 42 per cent in six months. The defence stock has also given multibagger returns to its long-term investors by soaring over 1,092.64 per cent in five years.
Navratna defence PSU company reported a net profit of ₹ 970 crore for the first quarter (April–June) of FY26, reflecting a 22.6 per cent year-on-year increase from ₹ 791 crore in the same period last year.
However, on a sequential basis, net profit dropped sharply by over 54 per cent from ₹ 2,127 crore reported in the preceding quarter (January–March).
BEL's revenue from operations grew 5 per cent year-on-year to ₹ 4,439.74 crore in Q1 FY26, up from ₹ 4,243.57 crore in Q1 FY25. Sequentially, revenue fell more than 51 per cent from ₹ 9,149.59 crore in Q4 FY25 and came in below the market consensus estimate of ₹ 4,708 crore.
As of July 1, 2025, the company's order book stood at ₹ 74,859 crore. Earnings per share (EPS) rose year-on-year to ₹ 1.33 in Q1 FY26 but declined from ₹ 2.91 recorded in the previous quarter.
The EBITDA margin rose by almost 6 percentage points, reaching 28.1 per cent compared to 22.3 per cent in the previous year. This also exceeded the anticipated margin of 24.5 per cent.
According to Seema Srivastava, Senior Research Analyst at SMC Global Securities, BEL has delivered a solid performance in Q1 FY26, reinforcing its credentials as a leading defence electronics company in India. Despite a modest 5.2 per cent revenue growth, BEL's operating profit margin surged by 560 bps to 27.9 per cent, reflecting better cost management and favourable execution mix.
Srivasatava further explained that the healthy 24.3% rise in PBT and robust PAT growth indicate consistent profitability and strategic discipline. However, a key monitorable is the slight dip in the order book to ₹ 74,859 crore, down 2.4% YoY. While this is not alarming, future order inflows from defence modernization, Make in India initiatives, and export opportunities will be crucial to sustain long-term growth momentum.
'BEL's debt-free status, strong cash flows, leadership in radar, missile systems, and EW segments, and growing focus on non-defence verticals like smart cities and cybersecurity further bolster its investment case. With strong government support for indigenisation in defence and BEL's proven execution capability, the long-term outlook remains positive. Investors with a 3–5 year horizon can consider BEL as a core portfolio holding for stable compounding and sectoral tailwinds,' she said.

Tata Power vs Adani Power: Which stock to buy after Q1 results 2025? EXPLAINED

Tata Power vs Adani Power: Indian power majors, Tata Power and Adani Power, declared their Q1 results 2025 on Friday. Both companies reported a strong set of numbers. Adani Power boasts a strong PAT 9Profit After Tax) and EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortisation), while Tata Power reported its 23rd consecutive quarter of PAT growth, with a strong focus on clean energy, manufacturing, and distribution expansion. This is expected to put Adani Power and Tata Power shares under the bulls' radar on Monday, as these companies have reported strong Q1 results despite weak power demand. Speaking on the Q1 results 2025 reported by these Indian power majors, Seema Srivastava, Senior Research Analyst at SMC Global Securities, said, "During Q1FY26, Adani Power boasts a strong Profit After Tax of ₹ 3,305 crore and Continuing EBITDA of ₹ 5,744 crore, showcasing its resilience. Its strategic focus on swift project execution, strategic acquisitions, and sustainability positions it for future growth towards its 30 GW target by 2030. On the other hand, Tata Power has a 6% YoY growth in Profit After Tax, marking its 23rd consecutive quarter of PAT growth, with a strong focus on clean energy, manufacturing, and distribution expansion." Speaking on Adani Power Q1 results, Gaurav Goel, Founder & Director at Fynocrat Technologies, said, "Adani Power has reported a strong profit of ₹ 3,305 crore, which is slightly lower than last year's ₹ 3,912 crore but still solid, especially considering weaker power demand due to early monsoons and lower merchant tariffs. Revenue also dipped a bit to ₹ 14,167 crore. But despite that, their operating margins stayed healthy, and EBITDA came in at ₹ 5,744 crore, which is a good recovery from last quarter." "What stands out is their focus on scale and efficiency. Even in a low-demand quarter, they remained stable, mainly because of their strong base of long-term PPAs and good cost control. Of course, recent acquisitions have added to depreciation, which is putting some pressure on profits," Goel said, adding, "Tata Power reported higher revenue at ₹ 17,464 crore, but a much lower profit of ₹ 1,262 crore. It looks like underperformance compared to Adani POWER, but there's more to the story." "Tata Power is clearly in a transition phase, shifting focus to clean and green energy. Around 44% of their current capacity is now renewable, and they're aiming for 70% by 2030. That kind of shift requires a lot of investment, and that's showing up in the short-term earnings. But they're building long-term value. They're also growing in areas like EV charging and rooftop solar, which could become strong drivers in the future," Gaurav Goel of Fynocrat Technologies said. On which stock to buy after the announcement of Q1 results 2025, Seema Srivastava of SMC Global said, "For a long-term perspective, Adani Power appears more attractive due to its higher growth potential and lower P/E ratio of around 10-15, compared to Tata Power's P/E ratio of around 32-40. Adani Power's aggressive expansion plans and strategic partnerships, like regular payments from Bangladesh, underscore its core strengths and competitive edge. However, Tata Power's diversified portfolio and strong brand reputation make it a stable choice." India's research renaissance in the age of predatory disruption

In the past few decades, India has made concerted efforts to bolster its research credibility. Targeted governmental focus on fostering innovation through budgetary support and policy frameworks has helped India rise in its Global Innovation Index ranking to 39th in 2024, up from 81st in 2015. Despite persistent challenges such as the fragmented nature of the research ecosystem, a lower-than-global-average investment in research and development (R&D), and issues of quality, India is publicly demonstrating a commitment to improving research capabilities and infrastructure. Since 2019, India has recorded a 10% annual growth in research publications and a 2% improvement in research quality—a testament to the increasing focus on both quantity and excellence. Research(Pexels) The 2025 Union Budget allocated around ₹20,000 crore to spur private sector-driven R&D, alongside a one lakh crore fund for commercial-scale innovation. The establishment of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) is a promising step towards improving research infrastructure throughout the nation, fostering a culture of innovation across higher education, and promoting stronger linkages between industry and academia. Advanced research capabilities are no longer a luxury, but essential for nations to innovate, strengthen their economy, and gain global competitiveness. Investment in research capacity is a commitment to a Viksit Bharat– India must become self-reliant in the development and adoption of advanced technologies. This is why research credibility has become a national strategic imperative, supporting not only domestic researchers and academic institutions but also the whole nation to reach its full potential. India has established itself as the third-largest producer of research worldwide, reflecting its significant and growing scientific contributions. As the country continues to develop its research ecosystem, efforts are ongoing to enhance the overall quality and global impact of its scholarly output. Challenges such as ensuring adequate funding, expanding access to structured mentorship, strengthening infrastructural support, and streamlining administrative processes are being actively addressed through various policy initiatives. These efforts are part of a broader vision to position India as a leading knowledge-driven economy. Continued collaboration among academic institutions, industry leaders, funding agencies, and policymakers will be essential in translating this vision into sustained research excellence. The Make in India initiative has attracted considerable foreign investment that supports domestic R&D, particularly for industries. To improve the quality of research output across the nation, universities and institutions must adopt a comprehensive approach to building a culture of academic integrity. Higher education enrolments are expected to double in the next decade, signalling a massive scale-up in our academic capacity. Nurturing the next generation of researchers requires strict adherence to internationally recognised standards as well as implementation of stringent measures and policies that combat academic piracy and fraudulent publishing practices. With the second-largest number of universities and colleges globally, such moves can help India leverage its massive higher education ecosystem to become a significant lever for sustainable development. This transformation depends on how effectively we can address ethical challenges, create a conducive and strong research ecosystem, and build global trust in the quality of its research. Initiatives like the One Nation, One Subscription (ONOS) aim to ensure seamless access to digital resources and knowledge, thereby democratising information and fuelling innovation at all levels. This strengthens the higher education infrastructure to nurture talent and research excellence, which must be complemented by capacity-building and skill development to empower researchers. Deeper links between industry and academia can unlock significant resources and relevance for research, helping the private sector strengthen India's innovation engines towards economic growth. Industry-academia collaboration is concentrated in top-tier institutions, leaving others behind. Adoption of advanced research tools and interdisciplinary databases by local and national universities can help researchers innovate at a global scale and elevate research credibility steadily. Emerging technologies, particularly AI, agritech, biotechnology and digital infrastructure, are poised to accelerate India's research revival. These technologies hold massive potential to solve for specific challenges in the Indian context, particularly towards inclusive and sustainable development. When AI is adopted thoughtfully, with transparency, integrity, and alignment to academic ethics, it can broaden equitable access to trusted scholarly information. Increased funding means that these sectors are set for rapid growth. To ensure that Indian research is high-impact and internationally relevant, systemic reforms are essential. Streamlining of administrative processes, upgraded research infrastructure, and stronger collaborations with global and private sector bodies can revitalise India's research ecosystem. Rigorous peer review, compliance with international standards of academic integrity, and robust institutional research support through cutting-edge tools can help build the necessary culture of trust required for driving quality research and innovation. India's diverse research landscape and its vast talent pool have much to contribute to the global pool of knowledge. As a leader of the Global South, India is well-positioned to drive solutions for climate resilience, green technologies, and medical breakthroughs. Unlocking this potential starts with getting the foundations right: Equipping India's researchers with the right tools, support, and environment to create knowledge that is backed by credibility and confidence.
