Northeast has tremendous capabilities, launch pad for global South: Scindia
India's northeastern states -- growing at between 11-12 per cent -- present "tremendous opportunity" as launch pad for all of global South, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has said underlining its historic and "fundamental" significance in the economies and trade networks of the entire South-East Asian region.
Scindia, who is Minister for Development of the North Eastern Region (MDoNER) and of Communications, has been actively driving initiatives to enhance connectivity, infrastructure and ecosystems across the northeast, positioning the region as India's next economic powerhouse, integrating all the eight states into a unified growth vision.
Earlier this week, the minister met top honchos of India Inc., including Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani, Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla as well as Tata Sons' Chairman N Chandrasekaran in Mumbai, ahead of the Rising Northeast Investment Summit 2025 scheduled to be held in New Delhi this month.
Discussions focused on region-specific growth sectors including agro-based industries, textiles, and tourism.
In a recent interview to PTI, Scindia noted that the northeast has historically been a very fundamental part of economies and trade for the whole of South-East Asia.
"It is important to keep in mind the history of the North East...It is through the North-East that goods and services used to travel all the way up to Europe. I believe that the North-East has...under Prime Minister's leadership, the concept of what used to be the last state has become today the first state," Scindia said.
Scindia noted that the northeast, endowed with rich natural and human resources, is experiencing growth rates exceeding the national average by over 300 basis points, with each of the eight states growing at around 11-12 per cent. He emphasised that this positions the region as a strong launch pad for the entire 'Global South'.
"I believe that today, as they grow, and their growth rates are in excess of 300 basis points of the national average... that each one of our eight states are growing at between 11-12 per cent. They present a tremendous opportunity for a launch pad for all of the global south. And that has been the Prime Minister's vision, which is what we are actualising on by the tremendous amount of investment into infrastructure, be it railways, highways, airports, waterways across-the-board...Ten per cent of Gross Budget Support (GBS), which is close to one lakh crore, going into the North-East every single year," Scindia said.
The northeast is undergoing a transformation, he said outlining the tremendous capabilities the region has.
"So I think the capability of the northeast today is paramount. And we need to be able to actualise and make sure that we give them that launch pad, if you will, to be able to contribute to the nation's progress," he said.

Karnataka Police Had Issued Pre-Event Warning Before Fatal Bengaluru Stampede
New revelations show that senior police officials had explicitly warned the Karnataka government about potential security lapses and overcrowding risks before the Royal Challengers Bengaluru victory celebration that resulted in a tragic stampede claiming 11 lives on June 4. An official letter written on the morning of the incident by Deputy Commissioner of Police MN Karibasavana Gowda has exposed that authorities were forewarned about the dangers of hosting the felicitation event at Vidhana Soudha. The communication, sent to top government officials, outlined specific concerns about crowd management and inadequate security arrangements. Gowda, who oversaw legislature security, addressed his warning to G Sathyavathi, Secretary of the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms. His letter explicitly stated that "lakhs of cricket fans are likely to come to Vidhana Soudha" and emphasized that insufficient security personnel would create significant challenges for crowd control and safety management. The police official's correspondence highlighted critical infrastructure deficiencies, particularly noting the absence of proper CCTV surveillance coverage in the sensitive government zone. He stressed that the combination of massive expected attendance and security shortfalls would create a potentially dangerous situation during the RCB celebration event. Despite these advance warnings, the event received official approval from authorities. The letter was reportedly shared with then-Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda, who further escalated the concerns to Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh. However, the celebration proceeded as planned, ultimately resulting in the deadly crowd surge. Hours before the tragic incident occurred, senior IAS officer G Sathyavathi, who was responsible for managing the Vidhana Soudha event, publicly urged fans to relocate to the nearby stadium instead. The RCB team was initially honored at the legislature building before celebrations continued at the stadium, but the crowd management issues had already reached critical levels. The aftermath of the stampede led to immediate administrative action, with B Dayananda being suspended by Karnataka's home department just one day after the incident. Officials cited serious planning and coordination failures during the RCB victory celebrations as the reason for his removal from the position. The tragedy has sparked intense political controversy, with the Bharatiya Janata Party launching sharp criticism against the Congress-led state government. Union Minister G Kishan Reddy condemned what he termed "complete failure in crowd management," arguing that authorities should have anticipated the massive turnout following RCB's historic IPL victory. Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy directly blamed Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar for the incident, characterizing it as the result of "impatience, immaturity, and irresponsibility." He questioned whether such a hastily organized felicitation ceremony was necessary given the obvious risks involved. Union Minister and BJP leader Shobha Karandlaje criticized the decision to use Vidhana Soudha's grand staircase for a private team's celebration, noting that the iconic venue had traditionally been reserved for official state functions and swearing-in ceremonies. She accused Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar of having "blood on their hands" while attempting to shift blame onto police officers. Karandlaje also defended the suspended police commissioner, describing B Dayananda as "a good and honest officer" who was being unfairly scapegoated for the administrative failures of political leadership. In response to the mounting criticism, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar issued a public apology while accusing the BJP of politicizing the tragedy. He acknowledged the government's responsibility and promised to implement better safety protocols for future events to prevent similar incidents. Legal action has been initiated in connection with the stampede, with police filing a First Information Report against multiple parties. The FIR names Royal Challengers Bengaluru, DNA Entertainment (the event organizer), and the Karnataka State Cricket Association, which manages the stadium. Authorities have stated that no formal permission was granted for the stadium portion of the celebrations. The investigation has already resulted in arrests, with Bengaluru Police confirming the detention of RCB's marketing and revenue head, Nikhil Sosale, on Friday. This development suggests that accountability measures are being pursued against both organizational and administrative parties involved in the event planning and execution.

About 2,500 acres of land will be required for 271-km circular railway network in Bengaluru
A 271-km circular railway network is being planned as a long-term, sustainable solution to Bengaluru's growing traffic congestion and mobility challenges, for which about 2,500 acres of land will be required, said Union Minister of State for Railways V. Mr. Somanna, chaired a high-level meeting on Saturday (June 7, 2025) at Kumara Krupa Guest House in Bengaluru to review the preliminary plans for the project. Mr. Somanna said that the network will span approximately 271 km and is designed to cater to the region's infrastructure needs for the next 50 years. The proposed network comprises three major stretches: Nidavanda–Doddaballapura–Devanahalli–Malur, Malur–Anekal–Hejjala, and Hejjala–Soluru–Nidavanda. About 2,500 acres of land will be required, and the entire cost will be borne by the Central Government. Chintan Shivir 2.0: Chhattisgarh Ministers to learn, reflect and share experiences
Raipur ( Chhattisgarh) [India], June 8 (ANI): A unique initiative, Chintan Shivir 2.0, commenced on Sunday at the IIM Raipur campus. This marks a significant step in Chhattisgarh's journey towards contributing to the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. According to a press statement, this is no ordinary government meeting. It is a thoughtful platform where all state ministers come together to share their experiences, lessons learned, and stories from the field. The two-day retreat, held under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, is exclusively designed for ministers to reflect on their journey of the past one and a half years and to chart out a collective path for the future. The primary objective of this shivir is not just to review past work but to define Chhattisgarh's clear and impactful role in making a developed India by 2047. Each minister will present the innovations undertaken in their department, lessons learned through public service, and their roadmap ahead. Special sessions focusing on the core themes of Seva (Service), Sankalp (Resolve), and Seekh (Learning) are also part of the program. Renowned experts from across the country are delivering lectures on key topics such as good governance, transparency, digital administration, public service ethos, cultural consciousness, and nation-building. The Shivir is structured like a learning workshop where each minister is actively engaged in upgrading their vision and capacity. As per the statement, one of the key highlights is a dedicated session on the theme 'From Good Governance to Elections,' which will focus on policy transparency, accountability, and decisions made in the public interest. Additionally, the Chief Minister will share insights and guidance received during his recent meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi, to ensure greater alignment between the central and state government strategies. Another important focus area in the Shivir is the ongoing transformation in regions like Bastar, which were once considered backward. In recent times, Bastar has seen rapid progress in tourism, self-employment opportunities, and infrastructure development. These initiatives are opening new doors for youth and reshaping the region's image. Ministers will present ground-level insights from their visits and project implementations, showcasing how development must reach every corner of the state, not just the capital. This Shivir is also an opportunity for introspection, where ministers will evaluate their past decisions and plan how to make governance more people-centric and impactful in the coming years. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has made it clear -- every minister is not just a departmental head, but a partner in development, an inspirer of change, and a responsible public servant. (ANI)
