Northeast has tremendous capabilities, launch pad for global South: Scindia
India's northeastern states -- growing at between 11-12 per cent -- present "tremendous opportunity" as launch pad for all of global South, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has said underlining its historic and "fundamental" significance in the economies and trade networks of the entire South-East Asian region.
Scindia, who is Minister for Development of the North Eastern Region (MDoNER) and of Communications, has been actively driving initiatives to enhance connectivity, infrastructure and ecosystems across the northeast, positioning the region as India's next economic powerhouse, integrating all the eight states into a unified growth vision.
Earlier this week, the minister met top honchos of India Inc., including Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani, Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla as well as Tata Sons' Chairman N Chandrasekaran in Mumbai, ahead of the Rising Northeast Investment Summit 2025 scheduled to be held in New Delhi this month.
Discussions focused on region-specific growth sectors including agro-based industries, textiles, and tourism.
In a recent interview to PTI, Scindia noted that the northeast has historically been a very fundamental part of economies and trade for the whole of South-East Asia.
"It is important to keep in mind the history of the North East...It is through the North-East that goods and services used to travel all the way up to Europe. I believe that the North-East has...under Prime Minister's leadership, the concept of what used to be the last state has become today the first state," Scindia said.
Scindia noted that the northeast, endowed with rich natural and human resources, is experiencing growth rates exceeding the national average by over 300 basis points, with each of the eight states growing at around 11-12 per cent. He emphasised that this positions the region as a strong launch pad for the entire 'Global South'.
"I believe that today, as they grow, and their growth rates are in excess of 300 basis points of the national average... that each one of our eight states are growing at between 11-12 per cent. They present a tremendous opportunity for a launch pad for all of the global south. And that has been the Prime Minister's vision, which is what we are actualising on by the tremendous amount of investment into infrastructure, be it railways, highways, airports, waterways across-the-board...Ten per cent of Gross Budget Support (GBS), which is close to one lakh crore, going into the North-East every single year," Scindia said.
The northeast is undergoing a transformation, he said outlining the tremendous capabilities the region has.
"So I think the capability of the northeast today is paramount. And we need to be able to actualise and make sure that we give them that launch pad, if you will, to be able to contribute to the nation's progress," he said.

He stressed that the combination of massive expected attendance and security shortfalls would create a potentially dangerous situation during the RCB celebration event. Despite these advance warnings, the event received official approval from authorities. The letter was reportedly shared with then-Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda, who further escalated the concerns to Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh. However, the celebration proceeded as planned, ultimately resulting in the deadly crowd surge. Hours before the tragic incident occurred, senior IAS officer G Sathyavathi, who was responsible for managing the Vidhana Soudha event, publicly urged fans to relocate to the nearby stadium instead. The RCB team was initially honored at the legislature building before celebrations continued at the stadium, but the crowd management issues had already reached critical levels. The aftermath of the stampede led to immediate administrative action, with B Dayananda being suspended by Karnataka's home department just one day after the incident. Officials cited serious planning and coordination failures during the RCB victory celebrations as the reason for his removal from the position. The tragedy has sparked intense political controversy, with the Bharatiya Janata Party launching sharp criticism against the Congress-led state government. Union Minister G Kishan Reddy condemned what he termed "complete failure in crowd management," arguing that authorities should have anticipated the massive turnout following RCB's historic IPL victory. Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy directly blamed Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar for the incident, characterizing it as the result of "impatience, immaturity, and irresponsibility." He questioned whether such a hastily organized felicitation ceremony was necessary given the obvious risks involved. About 2,500 acres of land will be required for 271-km circular railway network in Bengaluru
A 271-km circular railway network is being planned as a long-term, sustainable solution to Bengaluru's growing traffic congestion and mobility challenges, for which about 2,500 acres of land will be required, said Union Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna. 'The ambitious project aims to connect the city's peripheral regions while integrating with the upcoming suburban railway and National Highways, ensuring smooth travel for commuters and industries alike,' he added. Mr. Somanna, chaired a high-level meeting on Saturday (June 7, 2025) at Kumara Krupa Guest House in Bengaluru to review the preliminary plans for the project. Mr. Somanna said that the network will span approximately 271 km and is designed to cater to the region's infrastructure needs for the next 50 years. The proposed network comprises three major stretches: Nidavanda–Doddaballapura–Devanahalli–Malur, Malur–Anekal–Hejjala, and Hejjala–Soluru–Nidavanda. About 2,500 acres of land will be required, and the entire cost will be borne by the Central Government. Later, Mr. Somanna also held a review with SWR officials on other projects, including new lines from Tumakuru to Rayadurga and Tumakuru to Davangere, and the progress of multiple road over bridges (ROBs), road under bridges (RUBs), and pedestrian subways across Karnataka.
