He then began covering golf in the 1980s and worked for NBC Sports and the PGA Tour in America - including his 'Outside the Ropes' show.
Then in 2000, Bubka landed a job with talkSPORT, bringing his iconic New York tones to the UK sport radio station.
And his standing in golf saw him respected and revered by all.
That included two of the greatest golfers of all time - Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.
Nicklaus was made an honourary citizen of St Andrews in 2022 and personally invited his dear friend Bubka to be there.
And even the notoriously private Woods went out of his way to greet Bubka at The Open that year, seeking him out after a press conference after the iconic broadcaster travelled to the event despite poor health.
Rubert Bell of talkSPORT paid an emotional tribute to his great friend and colleague.
Bell said: 'Radio is about voice. There is no doubt when you heard Bob Bubka speak, it just grabbed you.
'Unmistakable, iconic, coupled with a wonderful, unique style. For over 25 years, his distinctive American tones enthralled and entertained talkSPORT listeners.
'His love for the game of golf shone through, coupled with a cheeky, almost rebellious element which made him not only a delight to listen to - but in my case - to work with.
Baffled Rory McIlroy hits TWO balls with ONE shot in incredible never-seen-before incident at The Open
'Bob was unashamedly biased when it came to Tiger Woods - in awe of his achievements - particularly as he had been brought up in the Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer era. It was a testament to Bob that Tiger always seemed to reach out and say hello.
'In later years, Bob's health made it difficult to travel and his last Open in situ was at St Andrews in 2022.
'He loved being there - and the relish in which he drove his motorised wheelchair around the city was fantastic.
'But what he also loved was the interaction with talkSPORT listeners - and I know in the end, being part of the talkSPORT family was so important to him as he struggled with ill health.
'Even when physically frail, that voice never faltered. Covering the majors will never be the same without that delicious voice drawing us into the magnificent sport of golf.'
Others in the golfing world took to social media to post their messages and memories.
Mike Parry said: "I'm really saddened to hear of the death of my great pal and legendary golf commentator Bob Bubka.
"He was THE best with an incomparably silky voice and unparalleled knowledge of the game. I worked six Opens with him. Joyous professional days... RIP Big Man."
Jonathan Norman added: "After marvelling at his voice and broadcasting style for a decade, it was one of my career highs to work with Bob at the 2014 Ryder Cup.
"He will be missed greatly. Thoughts with Janice and all Bob's family and friends. RIP."
Another wrote: "RIP Bob Bubka….. the voice of golf."
And a final user wrote: "Ahhh such sad news. RIP Bob Bubka, the voice of golf. Could listen to him all day."

In anticipation of an exciting victory for the Lionesses pubs and bars all over the country will be serving pints for an extra three hours. Punters in their thousand are expected to turn up to their local pub to cheer on the girls tomorrow night. The news comes after the government announced the measure earlier this year. It was stated that if either England or Wales made it into the semi-finals pubs up and down the country would be allowed to remain open late. Policing minister Dame Diana Johnson said at the time that venues "stand to benefit" from the later closing time. Tory MP Andrew Snowden went on to joke that his father might "disown" him, had his party not backed the proposal. Pub licensing hours can be relaxed for events of "exceptional national significance" with both the semi-final and final of the Euros included under this umbrella term. England earned their spot in the semi-finals after beating Sweden 3-2 on penalties. Fourteen spot-kicks were taken during the tense showdown between England and Sweden. Lionesses celebrate after bonkers Euro 2025 penalty shootout win over Sweden Only five of these were scored, six saved and three missed for a conversion rate of just 35.7 per cent. The nail-biting fixture saw the England women's team earn their chance to take on Italy in tomorrow's semi-final fixture. The Lionesses have gone unbeaten against Italy in their last five games, the most recent of which was a 5-1 battering in February last year. The second semi-final match will see Germany take on Spain at 8pm UK time on Wednesday, July 23. The Lionesses won the Euros in 2022, beating rivals Germany 2-1, and hope to do the same this year. Their 2022 victory was hailed as "inspiring" with the team bringing football home in front of a sold out Wembley Stadium. If the squad manage to progress to the final on Sunday, July 27, at 5pm UK time, the same extended hours are expected to apply to boozers across the country. 5 The side will face Italy tomorrow evening Credit: Getty 5 The England side are a strong contender to win against favourite's Spain Credit: Getty The Lionesses will kick off against Italy at 8pm UK time at the Stade de Geneve, Switzerland. Spain, the defending world champions, are favourites to take the trophy on Sunday but England is seen as a strong contender. The Lionesses said that until now, they have chosen to take the knee before matches. This wont be the case tomorrow night after star defender Jess Carter said she has been the victim of vile racist abuse online during the tournament. The Lionesses defender, who has 49 caps for England, announced that she will be "taking a step back from social media" as a result. The side posted a message of support for Jess yesterday, saying: "We stand with Jess, and all #Lionesses players past and present who have suffered racism."

Revealed: The staggering amount of money Scottie Scheffler's caddie has earned since teaming up with the world No 1 golfer

Scottie Scheffler 's caddie Ted Scott enjoyed yet another huge payday after the world No 1 cruised to a dominant four-shot victory at The Open last weekend. Scott has been an integral part of Scheffler's rise to the summit of golf, having first teamed up with him in late 2021. And since, the caddie has chalked up a staggering sum in terms of on-course earnings, with Scheffler winning just shy of $84million (£62m) in PGA Tour prize money since 2021. Under PGA Tour norms, caddies receive 10 per cent of the prize money, putting Scott's share of Scheffler's winnings at approximately £6.2m over the last four years, excluding additional bonuses and any amounts won on the DP World Tour. Last week at Royal Portrush, Scott will have picked up around $310,000 (£230,000) of Scheffler's first-place prize packet of $3.1m (£2.3m), taking his season earnings alone to around £1.2m to £1.5m. The 153rd Open Championship was, in fact, Scott's sixth six-figure payday of 2025 and his 13th in just 18 months, demonstrating how dominant Scheffler has been at the top of the sport. Wrong🤔 Not everyone would want to spend time with you because you're negative and tweet mean stuff😬 So that leaves 9,999,999 people that could do my 'job'✔️👍🏽 — ted scott (@jtedscott) September 4, 2024 The 29-year-old golfer's success at Portrush was the fourth major of his career, with Scott - who previously caddied for the likes of Olin Browne, Grant Waite, Paul Azinger and Bubba Watson - having won two more. Yet another victory for Scheffler has cemented the notion that Scott is undoubtedly one of the most successful caddies in golf history, both in terms of titles and wealth. Scott's role in Scheffler's success over the last few years has been paramount, with the caddie not only offering important insight but also helping to keep the golfer's emotions in check. In 2024, after a staggeringly lucrative year with the bag, Scott hit back at online trolls who suggested that his role as a caddie was an 'easy job'. In response to a social media user who claimed that millions of people in the US could do his job, Scott replied: 'Wrong. Not everyone would want to spend time with you because you're negative and tweet mean stuff. So that leaves 9,999,999 people that could do my "job".'

Inside Elon Musk's Tesla diner of the future staffed by ROBOTS with drive-in movie screens & burgers in Cybertruck boxes

ELON Musk's Tesla is opening a one-of-a-kind high tech diner where customers can order food from their car touchscreens and will be served by robots. Musk took to X earlier last week to praise the venue, saying: "I just had dinner at the retro-futuristic @Tesla diner and Supercharger. "Team did great work making it one of the coolest spots in LA!" The Tesla boss had previously hinted at building the diner back in 2018. While it still bears many of the hallmarks of a classic American diner, the Tesla venue has a typically futuristic theme. A humanoid robot called Optimus can be found inside, who is programmed to serve popcorn to guests. The robot was designed by Tesla. Visitors don't even need to get out of their cars to place an order, which can be done through their vehicle touchscreen. Their food will be served in Tesla Cybertruck-shaped boxes. Typical diner refreshments such as burgers, hot dogs, wings and milkshakes are all sold at the venue. Tesla's Cybertruck Graveyard: Hundreds of Unsold EVs Abandoned at Shopping Mall Anyone who fancies a movie while the eat can watch a film on the diner's two gigantic 45-foot LED screens. The audio for the movies will be directly streamed into visitors' cars. Tesla fans on Musk's X shared their reactions to the new venue. One user called The Tesla Duck said: "Tesla should open a lot more of these diners, I am not local to the one that opens tomorrow but the food looks pretty good and I think it's an awesome attraction. "I'd imagine they could be pretty profitable. What other car comes with restaurant access?" Another commenter said: "Tesla hosted LA's First Responders at their Tesla Diner in LA for their soft launch today, and man does this place looks amazing! "They gave out official Tesla Diner merch, including Optimus Diner figures. "They had their entire fleet on display including Cybercab, and an Optimus robot that was serving popcorn." It's not the only time the controversial billionaire's companies have made headlines in recent weeks. Musk's AI chatbot Grok went rogue earlier this month and started spouting pro-Hitler and antisemitic comments on X. The material surfaced on the platform after an update telling it to be more "politically incorrect". The chatbot even appeared to dub itself: "MechaHitler". A spokesperson for xAI, the company behind Grok, said: "We are aware of recent posts made by Grok and are actively working to remove the inappropriate posts. "Since being made aware of the content, xAI has taken action to ban hate speech before Grok posts on X." 5 Tesla fans on Musk's X shared their reactions to the new venue Credit: AFP
