Donald and Melania Trump host Easter event with 30,000 eggs despite high prices
President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania hosted the annual White House Easter Egg Roll with nearly 30,000 real eggs – despite continued high prices for them in the US.
The 2,500 dozen eggs were used at the event with the Trumps opening up the South Lawn to more than 30,000 visitors on Monday morning.
Donald and Melania, who wore a cream-colored coat and stood alongside an Easter bunny, blew whistles to kick off the event. They smiled and watched as children used spoons to roll dyed, hard-boiled eggs on the grass to the finish line while trying not to crack them.
Tens of thousands of eggs were used in the tradition dating back to 1878, even though retail prices for eggs are still higher than normal due to the bird flu spread. Wholesale egg prices have been trending down.

The eggs were donated by farmers were not the same size as those sent to grocery stores, according to the American Egg Board.
Board president and CEO Emily Metz stated in a press release that the eggs provided to the White House would 'not create additional strain on the nation's egg supply or egg prices'.
Farmers donate 30,000 eggs for the event every year. The figure may seem large, but Metz said they are only a small fraction of the 108million eggs sold to retailers on a daily basis.
'The eggs used for the White House Easter Egg Roll will be in sizes small and medium, which are not meant for the retail and grocery channels,' Metz stated.
Earlier this month, the president made it clear that he would not allow for the real eggs to be replaced with fake ones.
'They were saying that for Easter 'please don't use eggs. Could you use plastic eggs?' I say we don't want to do that,' he said, according to NBC News.
Metz said in an interview: 'We feel like we need to take a moment to celebrate where we can, and you cannot have Easter without eggs. And you cannot have the White House Easter egg roll without real eggs.'
During the egg roll, the president said Easter is 'special' and 'one of our favorite periods of time'.
'We're honoring Jesus Christ, and we're going to honor Jesus Christ very powerfully throughout our lives,' he said. 'We're bringing religion back in America. We're bringing a lot of things back, but religion is coming back to America.' More Trending
He gave his wife a 'special thank you' for working to organize the event.
Melania held her husband's hand and laughed as he made a joke about his predecessor, ex-President Joe Biden, being taken out by the Easter bunny and saying 'it's not taking Trump out'.
Asked by reporters how the egg roll went, Melania said: 'It was fantastic. So much fun.'

45 arrested after police pepper spray protesters outside immigration raid
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Massive immigration raids promised by Donald Trump are underway in major cities across the US – and one in Los Angeles descended into chaos. Raids took place across the City of Angels, but counterprotests led to multiple arrests, allegedly without warrants. Two Home Depot stores, a clothing shop called Ambient Apparel and other locations were raided by ICE agents. The video showed police throwing smoke bombs and one officer tackling a protester. Hundreds gathered as tensions increased. The violent scenes sparked outrage online, and the Coalition of Humane Immigrant Rights said 45 people were arrested without warrants. Executive director Angelica Salas said: 'Our community is under attack and is being terrorised. These are workers, these are fathers, these are mothers, and this has to stop. 'Immigration enforcement that is terrorising our families throughout this country and picking up our people that we love must stop now.' 'I am closely monitoring the Ice raids that are currently happening across Los Angeles, including at a Korean-American-owned store in my district,' Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove said. 'LA has long been a safe haven for immigrants. Trump claims he's targeting criminals, but he's really just tearing families apart and destabilising entire communities.' Mayor Karen Bass said Los Angeles would 'not stand' for the violent scenes witnessed across the city. Trump began his immigration crackdown shortly after re-entering office. More Trending In January, more than 500 arrests were made in one day before the first flights out of the United States began. The President issued an executive order, posted to the White House website, outlining Trump's plan to prevent undocumented immigrants from 'invading' communities and costing state and local governments. And a policy which previously restricted officers' abilities to arrest undocumented immigrants at 'sensitive' locations, such as schools, churches and hospitals, was rolled back. Just how much damage did Ukraine do in its 'Spiderweb' drone attack on Russia?
While Ukraine released what it said were recordings of drones attacking these air bases, as well as two others in the Ivanovo and Ryazan regions, satellite imagery did not show any visible signs of damage at these sites. Russia no longer manufactures these aircraft, said Thomas Withington, an electronic warfare and air defense expert at the Royal United Services Institute, a think tank in London. 'You can't just go to the factory and get a new one. Once you lose one of these aircraft, broadly speaking you lose it forever,' said Withington. 'That degrades the strategic and nuclear capabilities of the Russian air force.' Whatever the total losses, few outside Russia contest that Ukraine's operation was a remarkable feat of intelligence, planning and utilizing cheap, modern warfare tools. According to the SBU, it stashed 117 small drones inside sheds on the backs of trucks, unleashing them near the perimeters of four Russian air bases. One of these air bases, Belaya, is 2,500 miles away from Ukraine's borders. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hailed it as 'a brilliant result' that took 18 months to plan and would 'undoubtedly be in history books.' Zelenskyy aide Pavlo Palisa told journalists in Washington on Wednesday that 41 Russian aircraft were hit, around half of which were 'completely destroyed' and the rest no longer able to fly. The SBU and Zelenskyy said 34% of Russia's nuclear-capable strategic bombing force had been taken out of action — at a cost of $7 billion. Palisa told reporters that two Beriev A-50s — rare and valuable early-warning radar planes, known as 'awacs' — were 'targeted.' The SBU's video only appeared to show a drone landing on top of the radar dish of one of these aircraft, however, with no explosion. When contacted by NBC News for more information on how it came to its figures, the SBU said that NATO confirmed its tally — despite the discrepancy in figures given by the alliance. Russia has a far different version of events.

Putin unleashes aerial glide bombs in 'most powerful attack of entire war'
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Vladimir Putin has unleashed his 'most powerful attack of the entire war' on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. Missiles and drones pounded the northeastern city, located about 19 miles from the Russian border, killing three people and injuring as many as 21. Aerial glide bombs – which fly over long distances after being released by planes – were also deployed in the attack, the latest in near daily widescale assaults by Russia. Mayor Ihor Terekhov wrote at 2am on Telegram: 'Kharkiv is currently experiencing the most powerful attack in the entire time of the full-scale war. 'As of this moment, at least 40 explosions have been heard in the city in an hour and a half. More Trending 'The enemy is simultaneously striking with missiles, 'Shaheds' [drones] and guided aerial bombs.' Terekhov said 18 blocks of flats and 13 private homes were damaged in the attack. Citing preliminary data, he said Russia deployed 48 Shahed drones, two missiles and four aerial glide bombs. The intensity of the Russian attacks on Ukraine over the past weeks has further dampened hopes that the warring sides could reach a peace deal soon – especially after Ukraine recently embarrassed the Kremlin with a surprising drone attack on military airfields deep inside Russia.
