Maserati Grecale Folgore: Electric smoothness meets sporty spirit

Korea Herald5 days ago

Italian premium automaker Maserati has launched its first full-electric sport utility vehicle, the Grecale Folgore, in Korea, joining the recent wave of global carmakers introducing new models to the country's growing SUV market.
Despite the shift to an electric powertrain, the model preserves Maserati's hallmark blend of sleek design and dynamic performance found in its combustion-engine vehicles.
On Wednesday, The Korea Herald test-drove the SUV on a 140-kilometer route between Coex in southern Seoul and the Ananti Chord resort in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province, covering congested city streets, highways and winding mountain roads.
The exterior of the Grecale Folgore clearly reflects Maserati's design language. It features a curvy body and a low, elongated coupe-like silhouette, creating a sleek and dynamic presence that reflects the brand's heritage as a sports car manufacturer.
Inside, dark gray leather with light brown contrast stitching around the cockpit elements enhances the cabin's luxurious feel. A standout feature is the signature centerpiece clock — now digital, yet designed to evoke the look of a classic analog timepiece.
At the center, two displays are neatly arranged. The upper 12.3-inch screen handles infotainment and navigation powered by Korea's most-used T Map, while the lower 8.8-inch screen is dedicated to comfort functions such as air conditioning, ambient lighting and seat bolster adjustments.
The gear selection buttons are the only physical controls in this section, placed horizontally between the two displays and seamlessly integrated into the layout, creating a clean and thoughtfully designed interface.
During the drive, an engine-inspired sound filled the cabin, as Maserati replaced the high-pitched motor noise typical of EVs with its signature audio. This recreates the brand's distinctive auditory experience found in its combustion-engine models, while preserving the smooth glide of an electric vehicle.
Despite its hefty weight of 2,540 kilograms, the acceleration felt swift and unhindered. Powered by a high-output 410-kilowatt battery, the SUV delivers a peak output of 550 horsepower and 820 newton-meters of torque. According to the brand, it can sprint from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in just 4.1 seconds.
Power delivery remained consistent even on steep inclines, including hairpin sections, where sharp winding curves demanded frequent acceleration and braking.
The model's soft yet precise steering contributed to a comfortable and stable drive by minimizing body roll during both sudden lane changes in city traffic and while navigating tight curves on winding mountain roads.
Meanwhile, the model's rated driving range on a single charge is relatively low at 333 kilometers, even though its 105-kilowatt-hour battery from China's CATL is comparable in capacity to batteries in competing electric SUVs.
However, starting the test drive with 98 percent battery, the car still had over 70 percent remaining after completing a 140-kilometer route, suggesting it could travel beyond its rated range.
Maserati Korea has been delivering the Grecale Folgore since April, with a promotional starting price of 123.8 million won ($90,000) to celebrate the brand's 110th anniversary. The list price is 152.3 million won.

Georgia wants more Korean visitors, companies

'Guests are God's gift for Georgians' Georgia wants more Korean tourists and businesses, said Maia Omiadze, head of the Georgian National Tourism Administration, in an interaction with The Korea Herald on Wednesday. Omiadze is in Seoul leading a high-level Georgian delegation to South Korea from June 3 to June 9. She says that tourism is not just economic activity for Georgia, but also a point of cultural pride. 'A guest is a gift from God in Georgia,' she said, quoting a Georgian saying. 'We treat tourists not just as business opportunities, but as honored guests.' 'My personal feeling toward Korea has always been very warm. When I studied in New York City, I had a very good friend from Seoul, and from that time, I fell in love with Korea.' Despite the lack of direct flights, Georgia saw a remarkable 72 percent rise in Korean tourist arrivals in 2023, reaching 27,000 visitors. 'That's a positive trend,' she noted. 'We are in a recovery phase post-COVID, and the Asian market — especially Korea — is strategic for us.' During her meeting with Herald Media Group CEO Choi Jin-young, the administration and the media group discussed how to expand tourism and business ties. 'The way you (Koreans) make kimchi — in underground vessels — is similar to how we make wine. Both were recognized by UNESCO in the same year, in 2013, at the Intergovernmental Meeting in Baku. That connection is very special.' 'Georgia is a hidden gem,' Omiadze said, listing adventure, ecotourism, hiking and wine as some of her country's top draws. 'We know Korean tourists prioritize these experiences, and Georgia is the perfect destination in Eastern Europe for that,' she said. Choi expressed optimism for increased people-to-people ties through tourism. 'Many Koreans have not yet visited Georgia — this is where the potential lies,' said Choi, referring to Korea's evolving outbound travel patterns. 'The more exchanges we have, the more productive it will be,' said Choi, before also mentioning an impending free trade agreement that he believes will expand economic ties and open doors for Korean companies across sectors. Echoing Omiadze, Georgian Ambassador to Korea Tarash Papaskua pointed out that Georgian tourism is nearly 10 percent of its gross domestic product, and before COVID-19, "we welcomed 9.7 million tourists — almost triple our population.' Papaskua also added hope for direct flights and deeper partnerships with Korean travel agencies to follow successful charter operations like those by Hanjin Travel. sanjaykumar@

Sparks fly after Jim Rogers refutes ‘endorsement' of Lee Jae-myung

Investor tells The Korea Herald he does not support or endorse anyone, but liberals cling on to claim Rival parties on Monday bickered over the authenticity of the Democratic Party of Korea's claims that veteran US investor Jim Rogers supported its presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung. The controversy snowballed Monday after Rogers denied his endorsement of Lee in several interviews with local media from late Sunday. In an email inquiry from The Korea Herald, Rogers replied, "I do not support or endorse or anything any candidate there," when asked whether he supports or has endorsed Lee. Despite Rogers' direct denial, Kim Jin-hyang, the former head of the Kaesong Industrial Complex, who read the letter of 'endorsement' during a Democratic Party press conference Thursday insisted the endorsement was real. 'I officially confirm that Chairman (of Rogers Holdings and Beeland Interests, Inc.) Jim Rogers' support of candidate Lee Jae-myung is true,' Kim said in a statement jointly released with Song Kyung-ho, a professor at Pyongyang University of Science and Technology. Song, who is based in London, said that he communicated with Rogers on the messenger app WeChat from May 26-29, during which he agreed to release the letter of to the press. Kim explained that the gap in stance between Rogers and themselves was merely a 'misunderstanding." In the same statement, Song said that Rogers did express his 'support' for Lee. Song claimed that Rogers requested him to draft a support letter for Lee, but expressed regret that the media "misinterpreted" it as an endorsement. The two released screen captures of a WeChat conversation, showing Rogers responding, 'Thanks! This is fine.' However, the draft that Rogers approved was more measured in tone than the version released by the Democratic Party. In the draft, Rogers is quoted as saying, 'That is why I recognize the pragmatic approach of Lee Jae-myung, a leader who is focused not on ideology or political distractions.' By contrast, the final English version shared by the Democratic Party quoted Rogers as saying, 'That is why I strongly support Lee Jae-myung.' It goes on to describe Lee as 'a leader with the courage and vision to end the era of confrontation and open a new chapter of peace, growth, and global leadership for Korea,' and also contains a direct appeal: 'The choice is Lee Jae-myung.' Democratic Party chief spokesperson Cho Seung-rae told reporters 'there was apparently a process of refining the statements' made by Rogers, saying claims of 'fraud' were 'excessive.' In a Friday Facebook post, Lee Jae-myung had welcomed the "endorsement" of Rogers, highlighting the investor's longstanding interest in the inter-Korean economic ties. The People Power Party on Monday afternoon filed a complaint with prosecutors against candidate Lee, Rep. Lee Jae-gang and several others involved in the matter, for spreading false information and defamation. The party denounced the Democratic Party's claims as 'an international fraud' and called for Lee to drop out of the presidential race. People Power Party Interim Chair Kim Yong-tae said during the party's election committee meeting Monday morning that the Democratic Party's claims are 'incorrect stories spread by a person who met (Rogers) briefly a few years ago.'
