'You aren't aware of your capabilities': Akash Deep on Gautam Gambhir's motivating words during England tour
Indian pacer Akash Deep describes his first tour of England as smoother than he had imagined, thanks to a coach who believed in him, a supportive captain, and conditions that felt familiar rather than challenging.
He shared his thoughts in an interview with PTI.
His maiden tour saw him claim a 10-wicket haul in one Test and play a crucial 66 at the Oval in another, both contributing to India's wins. Reflecting on the performance, Akash recalled what head coach
Gautam Gambhir
told him after his innings at the Oval. 'You aren't aware of your capabilities. I was telling you, you can do it. You have to play with this dedication always,' the 29-year-old shared.

Akash spoke highly of Gambhir's support, saying the coach believes in him more than he believes in himself, both with the ball and the bat. Adjusting to new leadership has been easy for Akash, who made his Test debut under
Rohit Sharma
and now plays under
Shubman Gill
. He praised the calmness and on-field intelligence of the new captain.
Playing in England, Akash Deep found the conditions surprisingly familiar. Most matches had little seam or swing movement, which required him to adjust lengths similar to sub-continental wickets.

On concerns about injuries after missing games in Australia and England, he stated that impact injuries are unavoidable on the field but training injuries are minimised as much as possible.
Akash has played 10 Tests, taking 28 wickets. He said selectors have not restricted him to a particular format and that he focuses on being ready for any call-up.

Before the England tour, his sister Akhanda Jyoti was diagnosed with cancer, which was an emotionally challenging time for the family. He recalled how good performances lifted her spirits and helped the family stay positive.
After returning to India, Akash treated himself to his dream luxury SUV. Reflecting on his journey from playing tennis-ball cricket in Durgapur to becoming an international star, he said he has always focused on improving daily and living in the present. 'The heart of my life is cricket. The fancy car is temporary happiness, but cricket is my focus,' he said.

Cheteshwar Pujara says R Ashwin can take up coaching role for India in future
Indian cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara has named Ravichandran Ashwin as the candidate who can take over as the future coaching job of the Indian side in ESPNcricinfo Q and A. The 38-year-old Ashwin is known for his street smarts and understanding of the tactical side of the game to the 'T'. During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the off-spinner announced his retirement after the draw at the Gabba in Brisbane. Former Indian coach Rahul Dravid lauded the spinner and said the veteran also tends to 'challenge' him as a coach. 'The good thing about him is that he challenges you, and as a coach, you want that. Looking forward to more such memories with him. He is one of a kind,' Dravid would say during a felicitation function organised by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA).'He always has the desire to contribute to the team's success. Have enjoyed my time with him,' Dravid added. Dravid would further credit Ashwin for taking the art of spin bowling forward and say,'I hope he is not finished. He has moved the craft of spin bowling through his hard work, dedication and innovation. That's a great legacy to have. Fantastic! Well done and inspired a whole generation of young spinners.' While Ashwin has been considered as an astute mind in the game, he has also been associated with the overthinker tag. Speaking to the Indian Express, said, 'It's unfair to actually say somebody's an overthinker because that person's journey is his own. And nobody has a right or business to do that. There have been statements that people have made all along when leadership question has come my way, there have been people who are been out there telling, my name is not the first name of the sheet when India tour abroad.' 'Whether that name is first on the sheet or not is something I can't control. If I earned it, it's got to be there and that's my belief. As I said, I have no complaints, I have no time to sit back and throw punches or regret or anything. I have no regrets about anyone,' Ashwin said.

Khalid Jamil explains Sunil Chhetri's exclusion from Indian squad
Newly-appointed India head coach Khalid Jamil on Sunday cleared the air about the leaving out of talismanic striker Sunil Chhetri from the CAFA Nations Cup national camp, saying it was just a preparatory tournament for the crucial Asian Cup qualifying round matches in October. Jamil, who succeeded Manolo Marquez's as India head coach earlier this month, on Friday named 35 probables for the upcoming CAFA Nations Cup in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, with Chhetri missing from the list. Jamil did not say in so many words but made it clear that Chhetri is expected to walk into the national team for the Asian Cup qualifying round matches against Singapore on October 9 (away) and October 14 (home). He (Chhetri) is not there in this camp because we are playing a tournament which will essentially serve as a preparation for our Asian Cup Qualifiers, Jamil said on the second day of the national camp here. I also want to try out a few other players during this FIFA window. I had a talk with him about the same. It's always a pleasure to have a player like him in the team, and the door is always open for him. Sunil is a legend of Indian football. I have played against him, I've seen him play on numerous occasions, and he is one of my favourite players. He is a role model for Indian football," he said in a release from the All India Football Federation (AIFF). Placed in Group B of the CAFA Nations Cup, India face co-host Tajikistan on August 29, Iran on September 1 and Afghanistan on September 4. The third-place match and the final will be played on September 8 in Hisor and Tashkent (Uzbekistan), respectively. The national camp began on Saturday featuring 22 players while the remaining 13, who were doing club duties at the ongoing Durand Cup, are likely to join in a few days. The AIFF has urged all the clubs to release national team players for the tournament. The 41-year-old Chhetri took international retirement after playing against Kuwait in June last year but made a return for national duty in the match against Maldives in March this year following a request from Marquez to help the team in the Asian Cup qualifiers third round. Chhetri has played four matches since then and scored once -- in the 3-0 win over Maldives. India drew Bangladesh 0-0 and lost to Hong Kong 0-1 in the Asian Cup qualifiers, leaving the country in a difficult position to qualify for the continental showpiece in 2027. In between India lost 0-2 to Thailand in an international friendly. Marquez quit after the string of poor performance of the team. 'CAFA Nations Cup good opportunity to play against quality opponents' The CAFA Nations Cup will be 48-year-old Jamil's first international assignment, and Jamil said the central Asian tournament will be a good opportunity for his team to play against quality opponents. "This will be India's first-ever participation in the CAFA Nations Cup, and it will be a good opportunity for us to play against stronger and quality opponents like Tajikistan and Iran in CAFA Nations Cup. This will definitely be beneficial for us to prepare for AFC Asian Cup qualifiers. "There is absolutely no excuse for us, as we have enough time to prepare for it. We may be treating these as preparatory games, but this is serious business for us," he said. Tasked with turning the Blue Tigers' fortunes around, Jamil wants to take one step at a time. We must do the simple things first and go step by step. We are treating these matches as friendly games, but I want to take players who are fit. When I say fit, I mean, the players who will play must be 100 per cent fit, said Jamil. We started the camp with some players still not available, but we've got the players we need to begin our preparations. We had a good first training session yesterday (Saturday), but there's a lot to improve on. "The important thing is that we remain united as a team. For the national interest, we would like to request co-operation from clubs to release players on time, to ensure their adequate participation during the preparatory camp," he added. The former Jamshedpur FC and NorthEast United coach said he needs time to adjust to the team. "The players also need time to adjust to me. My doors are always open to everybody. Whoever is doing well will be selected. On his appointment as India head coach, Jamil said, It is my pleasure to serve the country. It has always been my dream to do this, and it has now come true, so that feels very good. "There is a big task ahead of us, and we've got many areas that we need to work on. I am fully aware how big a responsibility it is for me, but I feel thankful that the Federation (AIFF) felt me worthy to be entrusted with it.

'Don't ...': Brett Lee issues stern warning to Ravindra Jadeja despite hailing him as best all-rounder
Ravindra Jadeja and Shubman Gill (Getty Images) Ravindra Jadeja may not have dominated with the ball in the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England, but with the bat, the Indian all-rounder was a revelation. The left-hander piled up 516 runs in the five-match series, including five half-centuries and a memorable ton, reaffirming his value to the side. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Former Australia pacer Brett Lee , however, believes Jadeja's greatest threat could come not from opposition bowlers but from his own trademark celebration. Poll Do you believe Ravindra Jadeja will reach the 100-Test match milestone? Yes, definitely! No, it's unlikely 'The thing with Jadeja, the only way I see him getting injured is doing a rotator cuff with his, the way he does a sword celebration. So, I love it. Look after your body. Don't celebrate too hard,' Lee said on his YouTube channel, sounding both admiring and concerned. Lee, who rates Jadeja as the best all-rounder in world cricket today, added that no one comes close to matching his complete skillset. 'He has everything that a cricketer needs, and I think he actually ticks every single box. He does the basics right… arguably the best in the world,' he observed. At 36, Jadeja continues to be among the fittest in the Indian setup, something Lee sees as a cornerstone of his success. 'He's the fittest in the team. He prides himself on being the fittest, and to me, that is probably the reason why he never shies away from those big moments. He likes to be in the game. He's an entertainer,' Lee said. The former speedster also predicted Jadeja will soon join the elite 100-Test club. 'He's punched out 85 Test matches for his country already, and I believe he will go past that magical 100 barrier. Anyone who's played 100 Tests is a GOAT in my opinion,' Lee asserted. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!
