JJ Spaun's putt of a lifetime puts LAB putters on the map

Irish Times17-06-2025
What's in a name? Well, JJ Spaun's dramatic win in the
US Open
– where he used his putter like a magic wand, especially his dramatic 65 feet birdie putt to seal the deal on the 18th at Oakmont – has firmly put L.A.B. putters, the new kids on the block, very much on the map.
Spaun used a L.A.B. Golf DF3 putter, notable for being a zero-torque design, which gave the US company its first Major victory.
L.A.B. stands for Lie Angle Balance for which the company has a patented technology aimed at, yes, eliminating torque in putting.
The mission statement of the brand – emerging as a rival to traditional powerhouses Scotty Cameron and Ping – is straight to the point:

'The best golfers in the world have mastered nearly every shot in the game, but even for them putting is an entirely separate challenge. One day they make everything, and the next day they can't buy a putt. And if they can't hole putts with consistency, what chance does the average golfer have?'
Spaun's wizardry with the putter at Oakmont, where he holed a number of long putts on the homeward stretch, let actions speak louder than any words.

will seek to end a poor run of form – which has seen her suffer four successive missed cuts – at this week's KPMG Women's PGA Championship at Frisco resort in Texas, a course co-designed by Gil Hanse who was also responsible for the remodelling of Oakmont.
The 29-year-old Cavan golfer's season has flipped in the past month: where she hadn't missed a cut in her opening nine tournaments of the season, Maguire has missed consecutive cuts at the Mizuho Americas Open, the Mexico Open, the US Women's Open and last week's Meijer Classic, after which she fell a further five places to 57th on the latest LPGA Tour rankings.
Maguire is the lone Irish player in the field at Frisco, a venue which is making its Major debut and already named as a future host for the men's PGA Championship in 2027 and again in 2034.
By the Numbers: 4,300,000
That's the amount – in US$ – which JJ Spaun won for claiming the US Open at Oakmont. It was thee same pay-day as Bryson DeChambeau received for his win at Pinehurst last year, after the USGA opted not to increase the purse for this year's championship. Next year's US Open takes place at Shinnecock Hills on Long Island, New York.
Word of Mouth
'It was borderline unplayable. The water was like so close to the surface. I just don't know. It was like an aquaplane on the ground' – Adam Scott, ever the diplomat, providing his interpretation of the Sam Burns request for casual water relief on the 15th hole of the final round. Burns twice sought relief, from two different rules officials, but was denied and would double-bogey the hole, effectively ending his bid to catch Spaun.

Rodger Davis was a colourful member of the European Tour, with a fashion sense that included wearing distinctive plus-fours and sporting an equally distinctive moustache.
The Aussie's fifth of seven career wins on what is now the DP World Tour came in the Wang Four Stars tournament, an event which started off as the Bob Hope British Classic and, in its 11 years on the circuit, had no fewer than six different tournament names.
Davis had to win the tournament at Moor Park on the outskirts of London the hard way, his second win in the celebrity pro-am (having also triumphed in 1988) that numbered such personalities as Terry Wogan and Ronnie Corbett among its players.
Having edged out Eamonn Darcy by a shot two years previously, Davis claimed a second title in a four-man playoff – also involving Mike Clayton, Bill Malley and Mark McNulty – that would only see him emerge the victor at the seventh hole of sudden death with a par to finally overcome Clayton, the other two having departed at the first playoff hole.

After (kind of) playing it for 2 days, and watching over the weekend ... it's hard to express how difficult/borderline impossible Oakmont would be if it was firm. Not even rock hard, but just the slightest bit of firmness in the greens would make it (crazy) –

Q
The player's second shot lands in the greenside bunker. The player hits the ball out of the bunker and it comes to rest just short of the green. The player removes the sand that landed both on the green and off the green using a towel as it was on their line of play. What is the ruling in stroke play?
A
There is no penalty for removing sand that lies on the putting green (Rule 13.1c) but the player gets the general penalty (two penalty strokes) for improving their line of play by removing sand in the general area (see Rule 8.1a (4)).

Lowry falls out of Ryder Cup places after FedEx horror show

Shane Lowry has slipped out of Team Europe's Ryder Cup automatic qualifying spots after a performance to forget in the US. Lowry finished tied for 59th out of 69 golfers at the opening FedEx Cup Playoff in Memphis on Sunday. Heading into last week, the 38-year-old was fifth on the Ryder Cup Team Europe rankings, with only the top six automatically qualifying for the event. Shane Lowry had a poor display in Memphis. Pic: Ramsey Cardy/Sportsfile Lowry has now slipped down to seventh place after his poor showing in Tennessee. What hasn't helped Lowry's chances is that Justin Rose put on a stunning show to claim victory at the St Jude Championship following a tense three-hole playoff with JJ Spaun. Rose delivered a fantastic run of four birdies in the closing five holes before defeating the US national in the playoff. The 45-year-old's victory means that he has mathematically secured his automatic qualifying spot, sitting in second only behind Rory McIlroy. Tommy Fleetwood will be disappointed that he didn't come away with the victory in Memphis after leading by five strokes after 36 holes. While his wait for a PGA Tour win continues, Fleetwood has joined McIlroy and Rose in securing an automatic Ryder Cup qualification. Robert MacIntyre has fallen from second to fourth place in the rankings but holds a healthy lead over his fellow European hopefuls. Tyrell Hatton fell one place into fifth but it was Sepp Straka's decent showing that has pushed Lowry out of the top six altogether. Lowry has fallen out of the Team Europe top six. Pic: Ramsey Cardy/Sportsfile Lowry will be hoping to be one of the six captain picks that Luke Donald will have at his disposal but his recent form could worry the European skipper. The Offaly native has slumped ten places on the OWGR ladder after finishing tied for second at the Truist Championship in May. Lowry currently sits 18th in the rankings. However, there's a silver lining for the Irishman as he's already into this week's BMW Championship at Caves Valley. The field is down to just the top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings ahead of the season's final that will see only the top 30 progress to the Tour Championship at East Lake. The final event for Ryder Cup points will be the Betfred British Masters, which finishes on August 24. Meanwhile, JJ Spaun's runner-up finish in Memphis means that he has now mathematically qualified for the US Ryder Cup team. Spaun joins Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele on Keegan Bradley's team ahead of the event in New York at the end of September.

Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose confirm Ryder Cup spots

Tommy Fleetwood's disappointment at another failure to secure his first PGA Tour victory has been tempered by confirmation he has booked his place on Europe's Ryder Cup team. The Southport golfer went into the final round of the FedEx St Jude Championship with a one-shot lead, looking for his maiden win in his 162nd event, but a poor finish saw him miss out on a play-off by a stroke. That play-off was won by Justin Rose, who also booked his place in Luke Donald's side, with his opponent US Open champion JJ Spaun guaranteeing his spot in the United States team despite losing at the third extra hole. Two-time major winner Xander Schauffele also booked his spot for the United States with his joint-22nd finish. Rose, who will make his seventh appearance for Europe, posted a picture on Instagram of him celebrating holing a putt from a previous Ryder Cup with the caption: "Reporting for duty Captain!" Fleetwood, set to make his fourth consecutive appearance, did similarly, writing: "Yes!! Very proud." "I'm delighted to welcome both Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood to Team Europe for Bethpage," said Donald. "Justin's experience, leadership and proven Ryder Cup pedigree will be invaluable and his recent victory in America underlines the form and confidence he will bring to New York. "Tommy brings passion, consistency and an outstanding match play record, and he has shown time and again that he thrives in the team environment of the Ryder Cup." Scotland's Robert MacIntyre, Englishman Tyrrell Hatton and Austria's Sepp Straka currently occupy the final three automatic places for qualification, which ends after the Betfred British Masters in a fortnight.

Rose anticipates 'golden summer' as Fleetwood scrambles for positives

JUSTIN ROSE SEES a 'golden summer' of his career ahead after becoming the oldest European golfer to win on the PGA Tour in the modern era. The 45-year-old produced a sensational finish at the FedEx St Jude Championship with six birdies in his last eight holes to win a play-off against US Open champion JJ Spaun. After finishing runner-up to Rory McIlroy in the Masters last April as well as behind Xander Schauffele in the 2024 Open, Rose has come close to a second major triumph. After claiming his 12th US tour title, and his first since Pebble Beach in 2023, he feels well-positioned to add a major down the line. 'There's a lot of pride in that,' said the 2013 US Open champion. 'I'm not alone in it. There's been guys that have done it, but there's a pretty short list of guys that are competitive in that 45 to 50 age range. Historically, it was a bit of a waiting room for the Champions Tour. 'Phil (Mickelson) bucked the trend; he won a major at 51. That's good motivation. I still feel like there is that golden summer of my career available to me. That's what I've been pushing for. 'Moments like getting close at Troon and then getting close at Augusta, they're signals that it's possible. This is another really important signal that I'm on the right track with my game, and maybe even getting a little bit better at the moment. 'Will I ever be the best player that I was when I was 2018 No. 1 in the world? I don't know, but I don't have to be, I don't think, as long as I can find it at the key times. 'I've shown good signs, but winning is winning. Proving that to yourself, even though I've come close and I felt good in contention, getting over the line is still difficult. I've won, like, twice in six years now, but this one felt good. 'I felt like I had to hit the shots. I had to step up again and again in the play-off. I felt ready for it. I felt calm. I felt collected. That's when you learn most about yourself. 'I feel excited about where I'm at at 45 and I feel like there's a good bit of runway ahead.' Advertisement Rose felt ill earlier in the week and curtailed his practice rounds. 'It was a weird one. Monday night, I started to not feel 100%. Tuesday, I came out and did some practice, didn't actually get on the golf course. 'I didn't feel like playing nine holes was actually going to be helpful, so I just walked a couple of holes. I think we walked 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, and by the time I did that, I was like, just get me to the car. 'I was hoping to sleep it off. I woke up Wednesday morning even worse. My resting heart rate was like 80, and it's normally mid 50s. 'I pulled out of the pro-am, unfortunately, on Wednesday, and was able to get a lot of rest in that day and sleep. 'By the time Thursday came around, I felt pretty reasonable. 'In hindsight, a couple less days in the heat, a couple less days on the golf course maybe helps give you that mental freshness come Sunday. That's definitely possible. 'I certainly wouldn't have projected myself to be sitting here right now when I was thinking Wednesday morning how the week was going.' Rose looked out of it after a bogey at the 12th dropped him two off the pace with Tommy Fleetwood, world number one Scottie Scheffler, and Spaun ahead of him. But four birdies from the 14th catapulted him to the top of the leaderboard, and he just missed a 13-footer at the last to win outright. He produced two more birdies in three play-off holes – one a clutch effort after Spaun had holed from distance – with the second from 14ft after Spaun was half that distance away proving decisive as his opponent's attempt to extend the contest raced past. CLUTCH.@JustinRose99 birdies the third playoff hole to win the first playoff event @FedExChamp. — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) August 10, 2025 'That was an amazing last 90 minutes really. I never stopped believing,' Rose said. 'I played unbelievable golf coming down the stretch. I had so much fun with it. 'I hit a couple of good putts in regulation and in the first playoff hole as well. Obviously, JJ dropped a bomb on me, I topped him. It was a lot of fun. 'I've been saying for some time now, obviously Augusta, when I bring my best, I know I'm good enough to play and to compete, and to now win against the best players in the world. It's a very gratifying day for me and a lot of hard work coming to fruition.' Rose's joy meant more heartbreak for Fleetwood, who blew another chance to break his PGA Tour duck at the 162nd attempt with a poor finish. The Ryder Cup team-mates had holidayed together in Portugal last week, but failed to spark each other into life in the final group. Fleetwood did not make a birdie until holing his longest putt of the week from 33 feet at the 12th to put him back in a share of the lead. Birdies at the 13th and 15th edged him two in front on 16 under, but his weak attempt at a seven-foot par putt at the 17th never threatened and needing a birdie at the last just to make a play-off, he drove into a bunker and missed the green with his approach. 'I'm obviously going to be disappointed. I said last time, there's a lot of positives to take, as much as I won't feel like that right now,' he said. 'I'm just going to look at what I feel like I could have done and how close it was.' Fleetwood added: 'All these experiences and these close calls, there's no point in making or allowing them to have a negative effect on what happens next. What would be the point? 'It was a great week. I did a ton of good stuff, and as disappointed as I am, I have to try to find the strength to make it all a positive experience and hopefully next time go again, put myself in that position again, and we just go again.' - Additional reporting by PA.
