National Unity Ministry to roll out ethnic minority festival calendar in January 2026
Minister Datuk Seri Aaron Ago Dagang said the calendar would compile comprehensive information on the dates, backgrounds and descriptions of traditional festivals and ceremonies celebrated by ethnic minorities across the country.
'This calendar is not just a list of festival dates but serves as a medium for cultural education aimed at fostering mutual respect and appreciation for ethnic diversity, which is the cornerstone of Malaysia's strength,' he said when officiating the Borneo Dayak Cultural Festival (BDCF) 2025 at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang here last night.
Aaron said the calendar would be distributed in both printed and electronic formats to ministries, government departments, educational institutions and other stakeholders.
'With this calendar, the community will become more aware of festivals such as Irau Aco (Lun Bawang), Songkran Festival (Siamese), Kalimaran Festival (Murut), Lepa-Lepa Festival (Bajau), Magahau Festival (Rungus) and Mipis Festival (Dusun Lotud).
'We will gain a better understanding of cultural sensitivities and, more importantly, develop greater respect for one another as Malaysians,' he said.
Aaron added that national unity could not be achieved without mutual respect and cultural understanding.
'Only through understanding and accepting cultural differences can the spirit of 'Harmony in Diversity' be instilled in our daily lives,' he said.
Commenting on the BDCF, Aaron said the festival, now in its 21st edition, reflected the cultural strength and harmony among Sarawak's diverse communities, including the Dayak, Malay, Melanau and Chinese.
'This festival is unique and special, as it highlights unity in cultural diversity through artistic performances, traditional food and ethnic heritage,' he said.
Carrying the theme 'Rhythm of Borneo 2025', this year's edition also saw the introduction of a new official mascot, Engkuli, the local name for the Harimau Dahan (Neofelis diardi), which represents biodiversity preservation and the natural wealth of Borneo.
According to Aaron, Sarawak - home to over 30 ethnic groups and more than 40 dialects — was the best example of how cultural diversity could serve as a foundation for social unity and strength. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — Get ready for a night of spiritual healing as legendary Nasyid group Rabbani will be holding a mega concert really soon. Set to take place this September 20 at the Idea Live Arena in Petaling Jaya, the Konsert Intifada Rabbani will also mark the group's 28th anniversary since their inception back in March 1997. Rabbani initially consisted of eight members including the late Mohd Asri Ibrahim, Azadan Abdul Aziz, Asri Ubaidullah, Zulkiflee Azman, Luqman Abdul Aziz, Muhammad Rithauddeen, Mohamad Afandi Shahbudin and Ahmad Shafie. However, since the passing of lead vocalist Mohd Asri Ibrahim back in 2009, the group has been performing with the remaining seven members. Aside from Rabbani themselves, the two-hour concert will also feature three more local Nasyid groups including Brothers, Yabang as well as Aeydan who will be joining in as guest performers. As previously reported by Sinar Harian, Aeydan actually consists of the sons of Rabbani members including its main vocalist Muhammad Ilham Fikri who is the fourth child of the late Mohd Asri. Meanwhile Brothers is another popular 90's Nasyid group whose members includes Syah Rizal Mohamed, Abdullah Faiz Mohamad, the late Mohd Salleh Mohamed Deril as well as convicted singer Yasin Sulaiman. Fans can also expect to sing-along to some of their timeless hits such as Intifada, Pergi Tak Kembali and Satu Qiblat Yang Sama. The Konsert Intifada Rabbani is organised by Universe Gateway, the team behind The Journey of Sound by Judika and Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza concert last December 14. Tickets for the Rabbani concert will go on sale starting this July 31 (Thursday) via or with ticketing price ranging between RM150 to RM258. Aside from Rabbani, another popular Nasyid group InTeam will also be serenading fans at the Idea Live Arena this September 28. It was previously reported that the InTeam's Kasih Kekasih 25 Tahun concert had sold out within an hour which prompted the organiser to change their venue from Zepp KL to a much larger one to cater to the demand.

Malaysian Jazzy Pictures teams up with Korean studio for disability-themed film ‘Bluefish'
KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — Malaysian production house Jazzy Pictures is collaborating with South Korea's Oh' Yes Co., Ltd and Indonesia's Timeless Productions to co-produce an upcoming South Korean film titled Bluefish. The film will be directed by acclaimed Korean filmmaker Lee Sang-hoon and produced by Joanne Goh, founder of Jazzy Pictures and the Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest). Bluefish will star Ji Seung-hyun, known for his role as Gim Ji-sang in the 2024 Korean legal drama Good Partner, alongside Cecilia Choi, a familiar name in Hong Kong cinema with credits including Beyond the Dream (2019). Jazzy Pictures' involvement in the project is part of its ongoing mission to work with international production houses and bring bold stories to audiences. The film also marks a dream collaboration between South Korea and Hong Kong, highlighting the power of cross-border Asian storytelling. The story of Bluefish Bluefish follows Gwang-su (Ji Seung-hyun), a troubled drifter with a violent past whose life changes when he meets Yeon-jeon (Cecilia Choi), a mute girl who delivers milk. Instead of fearing him, she offers quiet kindness — something he has never known. Her compassion prompts Gwang-su to question himself. Over time, his anger turns into guilt, then tenderness. But just as he begins to change, a misunderstanding separates them. The inspiration behind Bluefish Director Lee shared that the inspiration behind Bluefish stemmed from a long-standing interest in how society views and treats people with disabilities. He observed that they are often met with 'quiet pity' or discomfort, which only deepens their isolation rather than fostering inclusion. With this film, Lee hopes to challenge those perceptions — not by portraying disability as something extraordinary or tragic, but as a natural part of everyday life, a reality that extends across the world, including in Malaysia. 'People with disabilities are not so different from the rest of us. 'Their lives, struggles, and emotions are just as rich, complex, and human,' he added. Lead actor Ji said: 'I'm truly happy to take on this role, and I'm very much looking forward to the filming process and working together with Cecilia Choi. 'More than that, we hope the film gives hope, light, and courage to people with disabilities, to show them they, too, can live independently and meaningfully, just like anyone else.' Sheila On 7 leads star-studded Latihan Pestapora Malaysia as 25,000 fans show up
KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — 'Music connects us all' — that was the spirit at the inaugural Latihan Pestapora Malaysia, where over 25,000 fans packed the Bukit Jalil National Stadium for a full-day music celebration. The massive turnout came despite the festival coinciding with the Opposition-led 'Turun Anwar' protest in the capital, which reportedly drew over 18,000 demonstrators. Held on July 26, the music festival featured more than 25 acts from Malaysia and Indonesia, including current Indonesian chart-toppers Hindia and Feast., as well as the highly anticipated return of legendary rock band Sheila On 7 (SO7). Popular Malaysian acts such as Bunkface and SonaOne also left their mark on the historic stage. While the record for the largest concert crowd in Malaysia still belongs to British band Coldplay, who drew over 75,000 fans in 2023, Latihan Pestapora Malaysia is already being hailed as one of the most-attended music festivals in the country. Some of the acts performing on the two main stages of Latihan Pestapora Malaysia include Dolla, Pamungkas, Bittersweet and Kunto Aji. A first outside Indonesia Latihan Pestapora is part of a series of pre-events leading up to Indonesia's main Pestapora festival, which will be held from September 5 to 7 in Jakarta. This marks the first time a pre-event was staged outside Indonesia since the festival's inception in 2022. The Malaysian edition was co-organised by local company Hitman Solutions and Indonesia's Boss Creator, founder of Pestapora. The festival featured three stages: the main Hitman and Boss arenas, set side by side on the stadium track, and the Hingar Bingar stage located in the festival area near food and merchandise booths. Thousands arrive early despite heat Despite the hazy and hot Saturday, fans began arriving as early as 10am. Sheila On 7 rocks the house The night's biggest draw was the return of Sheila On 7, who hadn't performed in Malaysia since 2018. The band delivered a rousing 90-minute set featuring their iconic hits Hari Bersamanya, Film Favorit, and Sebuah Kisah Klasik (Untuk Masa Depan). The stadium echoed with singalongs for fan favourites Melompat Lebih Tinggi, Sephia, Seberapa Pantas, and Berhenti Berharap — the latter drowned out by the audience singing every word. Love them or hate them, local pop-punk band Bunkface proved their worth at Latihan Pestapora Malaysia. Bunkface, Empty Page, SonaOne energise local stage Local pop-punk band Bunkface earned praise for their high-octane performance on the main stage post-Maghrib prayers. Opening the evening segment, they launched into Malam Ini Kita Punya, Rentak Laguku, Situasi and Revolusi, prompting full-scale singalongs. Meanwhile, the Hingar Bingar stage, which initially saw smaller crowds, built momentum thanks to appearances by Alvn, Ismail Izzani, Julia Duclos, DJ CZA, Killa Driz and Gaston Pong. Show-stealers included local band Empty Page, who delivered a fun and intimate set, and rapper SonaOne, who thrilled the crowd with hits such as Apa Khabar and Satu Malam Di Temasek. Feel Koplo and Ari Lesmana close the show While many left after SO7's set, those who stayed were rewarded with a buzzing performance by Indonesian dangdut duo Feel Koplo, who brought Fourtwnty frontman Ari Lesmana on stage. Together, they performed dangdut remixes of Mangu and Fana Merah Jambu, closing the night on a high. Teething issues and future plans Some attendees voiced complaints about long queues and limited water stations early in the day. However, organisers resolved the issue by 8pm after opening more water points. Hitman Solutions founder Rohit Rampal acknowledged the logistical challenges but praised the team effort. 'Bringing Latihan Pestapora to Malaysia is a major milestone. It's not just a production achievement but a cultural success,' Rohit said. He hinted at plans to make it an annual event following the overwhelming response.
