Anil Ambani leaves ED office after 9 hours of questioning in ₹17,000 crore PMLA case — Watch
The agency, which probes money laundering and violations of foreign exchange laws, is investigating an alleged diversion of funds from Reliance Infrastructure to a related party without adequate disclosures. The company had last week said this exposure was of ₹ 6,500 crore and that it had disclosed this matter in February itself.
Reliance Infrastructure maintains it has diligently pursued recovery of its dues in this matter, and through mandatory mediation proceedings conducted by a retired Supreme Court Judge and the mediation award filed before the Bombay High Court, the company had arrived at a settlement to recover its exposure of ₹ 6,500 crore.
Anil Ambani has not been on the board of Reliance Infrastructure since March 2022.
Queries emailed to Anil Ambani's Reliance Group and to the finance ministry on Tuesday, seeking their comments on the latest development remained unanswered at the time of publishing this report.
News agency ANI reported that Ambani was asked to appear before investigators in connection with a probe on suspected financial irregularities and possible violations under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The probe agency is looking into the role of various entities and individuals linked to the case, ANI reported.
In May 2020, the ministry of corporate affairs had referred the issue of Price Waterhouse & Co Chartered Accountants LLP's (PW) resignation as auditors of some of the group companies without giving an audit report for FY19, to the National Financial Reporting Authority (NFRA).
NFRA had looked into the audits done by the auditors appointed subsequently in the case of Reliance Home Finance Ltd, Reliance Commercial Finance Ltd and Reliance Capital Ltd, and penalised the auditors for alleged professional misconduct, the authority's orders showed.
Reliance Infrastructure provides engineering and construction services for power, roads, metro rail and other infrastructure sectors. It is also engaged in implementation, operation and maintenance of several projects in the defence sector and infrastructure areas through its special purpose vehicles, the company said on its website.
It had executed the Mumbai Metro line one project and is also a utility company having presence across the value chain of energy businesses, the company said.
The ED had earlier issued a lookout circular against Ambani and had sought his presence for recording his statement under the PMLA, Hindustan Times had reported on 1 August.

Trump hints at additional sanctions on Russian oil buyers, including China
US President Donald Trump on Wednesday (local time) hinted at more "secondary sanctions" on a couple of other countries, and "one of them could be China". This comes after he announced an additional 25 per cent tariff on India for purchasing Russian crude oil amid the ongoing Ukraine war. Trump made these remarks during a press conference at the White House. When a reporter asked why India was being singled out despite several other countries, including China, buying Russian oil, Trump said, "It's only been eight hours. So let's see what happens. You're going to see a lot going to see so much secondary sanctions [sic]." #WATCH | On secondary sanctions, US President Donald Trump says, "It may happen. I don't know, I can't tell you yet. But we did it with India. We are doing it probably with a couple of others, one of them could be China." (Source: The White House/YouTube) — ANI (@ANI) August 7, 2025 When asked whether he had any similar plans of imposing penalties on China, Trump said, "Could happen. Depends on how we do. Could happen." Trump imposes additional tariffs on India Earlier, Trump raised India's tariff rate to 50 per cent after he levied an additional 25 per cent tariff for its Russian energy purchases. In the order issued by the White House, Trump claimed that India's imports of Russian oil, directly or indirectly, pose an "unusual and extraordinary threat" to the United States. In response, India termed the move "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable", adding that New Delhi would take "all actions necessary to protect its national interests". In an official statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said, "The United States has in recent days targeted India's oil imports from Russia. We have already made clear our position on these issues, including the fact that our imports are based on market factors and done with the overall objective of ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion people of India." "It is therefore extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest," the statement added."We reiterate that these actions are unfair, unjustified and unreasonable. India will take all actions necessary to protect its national interests", it added.

Madras HC slaps Rs 30,000 costs on ED for not filing counter affidavits in Tasmac scam case
CHENNAI: In what is considered to be a first-of-its-kind move, the Madras High Court on Wednesday imposed costs of Rs 10,000 each, for three petitions, on the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for failing to file counter affidavits to the petitions moved by film producer Akash Bhaskaran and businessman Vikram Ravindran over the search and seizure operations held in their offices and residences for money laundering connected to the alleged Tasmac scam. The order imposing costs was passed by a division bench of Justices M S Ramesh and V Lakshminarayanan after taking seriously the failure of the ED to file the counter affidavits despite giving it a last chance. The bench termed it 'unfair' on the part of the central agency for not having come up with the counter affidavit. Special public prosecutor N Ramesh, appearing for ED, submitted that the counter affidavit was being prepared as a comprehensive one encompassing the three petitions and so, it could not be completed on time. He sought more time to file it.
