"Eleceed" Webcomic Anime Adaptation Is on the Way
Webtoon Entertainment's Line Digital Frontier has greenlit an anime adaptation of the popular webcomic '
Eleceed
,' tapping Oscar-nominated DandeLion Animation Studio to bring the show to screens.
The adaptation marks a new move in Webtoon's aggressive push into animation, with the company developing 20 anime titles slated for 2025.
'Eleceed,' created by Jeho Son and Zhena, has racked up over 1.4 billion global views on the platform and is published in 10 languages, making it one of Webtoon's top-performing action titles worldwide.
The series follows Jiwoo Seo, a kind-hearted teenager with hidden powers, and Kayden, a powerful being who takes refuge as a stray cat after being injured. Their unlikely partnership leads them through battles against formidable enemies and deep-rooted conspiracies.
Hiroshi Nishikiori, known for 'Idolish7 Movie' and 'Honey Lemon Soda,' will direct the adaptation. Yousuke Kuroda, scribe for 'My Hero Academia,' will handle the series composition and script. Minami Sakura of 'Gridman Universe' will oversee character design.
'Eleceed delivers the perfect blend of high-speed action and a tightly woven storyline,' said Sinbae Kim, chief growth officer at Line Digital Frontier. 'The upcoming anime adaptation is a chance to introduce this dynamic series to a broader global audience, and we believe it marks an exciting new chapter in our global storytelling journey.'
Creator Jeho Son expressed excitement about the news: 'It feels like a dream to finally share the news that Eleceed is getting an anime adaptation! DandeLion Animation Studio, founded in Tokyo in 2007, earned Oscar recognition for its short film 'Magic Candies,' which was nominated in the Short Animation category at the 97th Academy Awards.
The studio also produced 'The First Slam Dunk,' which became the 12th highest-grossing film in Japanese box office history.
To promote the adaptation, DandeLion president Kazuhiro Nishikawa will appear at Anime Expo in Los Angeles on July 6 to share production insights.
The 'Eleceed' anime joins Webtoon's expanding slate of adaptations, which includes the highly anticipated 'Omniscient Reader' anime with Aniplex and Crunchyroll, and the recently announced 'Teenage Mercenary' adaptation.
Recent Webtoon anime releases include 'Viral Hit,' 'Tower of God Season 2,' 'True Beauty,' and 'Senpai Is an Otokonoko' on Crunchyroll.
Webtoon Entertainment boasts approximately 150 million monthly active users across its ecosystem of platforms, which includes Webtoon, Wattpad, Line Manga, and ebookjapan, among others.

Ryan Gosling's "Project Hail Mary" Drops Trailer
Yara Sameh Ryan Gosling is heading to space in the first trailer for the comedic sci-fi adventure "Project Hail Mary". The film from Amazon MGM Studios stars Gosling as Ryland Grace who makes a leap from an unassuming teacher to an astronaut assigned to a risky space mission. The 'Barbie' star appears opposite Sandra Hüller ('Anatomy of a Fall'), who convinces Gosling's character to launch himself into space to save humanity. The official synopsis reads, "Set in the near future, it centers on school-teacher-turned-astronaut Ryland Grace, who wakes up from a coma afflicted with amnesia. He gradually remembers that he was sent to the Tau Ceti solar system, 12 light-years from Earth, to find a means of reversing a solar dimming event that could cause the extinction of humanity." 'It's an insanely ambitious story that's massive in scope, and it seemed really hard to make, and that's kind of our bag,' Gosling said about the film at CinemaCon. 'This is why we go to the movies. And I'm not just saying it because I'm in it. I'm also saying it because I'm a producer on the film.' Based on the Andy Weir novel of the same name, the film was directed by 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Drew Goddard, who penned the film adaption of Weir's 'The Martian,' wrote the script. 'The Martian,' which was directed by Ridley Scott and starred Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain, went on to garner seven Oscar nominations and was a box office smash. Besides 'Barbie,' Gosling recently appeared in 'The Fall Guy.' He also played astronaut Neil Armstrong in 'First Man,' which saw him reunite with 'La La Land' filmmaker Damien Chazelle. Hüller earned an Oscar nomination for 'Anatomy of a Fall' and also appeared in 'The Zone of Interest.' Lord and Miller won an Oscar for 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' and previously helmed '21 Jump Street' and 'The Lego Movie.' "Project Hail Mary" is set to debut in theaters and IMAX on March 20, 2026. Tennis: Wimbledon brings out Beckham, Sharapova and other stars on Day 1 - Omni sports
David Beckham and Maria Sharapova were among the stars of sports and screen at Wimbledon on Monday for the start of the tournament. Sharapova, the 2004 champion at the All England Club at age 17, posted a selfie with Beckham on Instagram with the caption: 'Let the (Wimbledon) games begin' with an emoji of a tennis balls. Sharapova will be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame later this year. Former England soccer captain Beckham was on the list of guests expected to attend Centre Court matches on Day 1. Others included Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne and former England soccer coach Gareth Southgate. Beckham is the only player to score for England at three World Cups. He is the co-owner of American club Inter Miami, which is led by Lionel Messi and was eliminated Sunday from the Club World Cup in the United States with a 4-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain.
