TIFF to introduce new audience choice award for international films
TORONTO – The Toronto International Film Festival is introducing a new people's choice award for international films.
Feature-length films from TIFF's official selection that are not from Canada or the United States will qualify for the new award, which will debut at this year's festival in September.
As in the festival's other people's choice awards, audiences will be asked to vote on their favourite film that meets that criteria.
TIFF's main people's choice award is considered a bellwether for the Oscars best picture race, with previous winners including 'Nomadland,' 'Green Book' and 'La La Land.'
The festival also has an audience choice award for its Midnight Madness program, and last year's winner, 'The Substance,' scored five Oscar nominations.
Winnipeg Jets Game Days
On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop.
The addition comes as TIFF prepares to launch a content market in the 2026 festival, which would run alongside the public-facing event to facilitate distribution and funding deals.

Fewer Quebecers head to movies, but market share of Quebec films rises
MONTREAL – There were fewer visits to Quebec movie theatres in 2024, bucking an upward trend that had seen the number of trips to the cinema grow steadily since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Data from Quebec's statistics institute found that movie theatres in Quebec recorded 13.5 million visits last year compared to 14.6 million in 2023. Movie outings in both those years numbered far less than in 2019, when Quebec theatres recorded 18.7 million visits. That number plummeted to 4.3 million visits in 2020, during the pandemic, and had been increasing every year until 2024. Cineplex reports $55.3M May box office revenue up from $33.9M a year ago
TORONTO – Movie theatre company Cineplex Inc. reported its May box office report rose compared with a year ago helped by Final Destination: Bloodlines, Lilo & Stitch, and Mission: Impossible – the Final Reckoning. Cineplex chief executive Ellis Jacob says the breadth of titles in May showcased the benefit that a steady supply of diverse films can have on the box office. The company says its box office take for May totalled $55.3 million. The result was up from $33.9 million in the same month last year. Jacob says the strength is expected to continue in June with the coming release of the live action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon, Elio, 28 Years Later, and F1: The Movie. Kim Novak to receive Venice Film Festival's lifetime achievement honor
Kim Novak, the glamorous and fiercely independent star of one of the greatest films ever made, Alfred Hitchcock's 'Vertigo,' will be honored with a lifetime achievement award at the Venice Film Festival this fall. Festival organizers said Monday that they will also host the world premiere of Alexandre Philippe's documentary 'Kim Novak's Vertigo,' which was made in collaboration with the actor. Alberto Barbera, the festival's artistic director, said that the award, 'celebrates a star who was emancipated, a rebel at the heart of Hollywood who illuminated the dreams of movie lovers before retiring to her ranch in Oregon to dedicate herself to painting and to her horses.' Novak, who is 92, left her Hollywood career behind long ago. But in recent years she has occasionally granted interviews around significant film anniversaries and made public appearances. After presenting at the 2014 Oscars many online, including Donald Trump, insulted her appearance. She responded with an open letter writing, 'I will no longer hold myself back from speaking out against bullies.' Earlier this year actor Sydney Sweeney paid homage to Novak on the Met Gala red carpet. She's portraying Novak in a new film directed by Colman Domingo about her relationship with Rat Packer Sammy Davis Jr. Of this latest honor, Novak said she is 'deeply touched' to receive the award. 'To be recognized for my body of work at this time in my life is a dream come true,' Novak said. 'I will treasure every moment I spend in Venice. It will fill my heart with joy.' The Venice Film Festival runs from Aug. 27 through Sept. 6, but the full slate of films selected won't be announced until late July. 'The Holdovers' filmmaker Alexander Payne will preside over the main competition jury.
