Low attendance on Hamare Shikshak App despite orders

Time of India3 days ago
Indore: Despite orders from the divisional commissioner to ensure 100% teacher attendance through the 'Hamare Shikshak' app by July 31, Indore district saw no compliance. Not a single Block Resource Coordinator (BRC) submitted the mandated 100% attendance certificate, and app usage among teachers remains abysmally low.
According to the District Project Coordinator (DPC) office, the directive required BRCs to certify that all teachers in their respective blocks started marking attendance on the app. However, even ten days after the deadline, no certificates were received, and attendance levels showed no significant improvement. Current records reveal that only about 10% of the district's govt school teachers are using the app to mark attendance.
The 'Hamare Shikshak' app, rolled out statewide on July 1, was designed to digitally capture teachers' attendance in real time and upload it directly to the Education Portal 3.0. Officials hoped the system would improve transparency, curb absenteeism, and allow higher authorities to monitor attendance remotely.
Teachers, especially those working in rural parts of Indore district, have expressed strong reservations.
Many cite poor mobile network coverage as a major hurdle, making it difficult to log attendance consistently. Others say the app was launched without sufficient field testing, leading to frequent technical glitches. "We come to school to teach, not to spend time troubleshooting an app," said one teacher, reflecting the frustration among staff.
Officials warned that failure to record attendance on the app could be treated as absence and may result in salary deductions.
Despite this, adoption has been slow. Indore district has around 1,100 govt schools employing roughly 6,500 teachers, but only a small fraction have embraced the digital system.
DPC Sanjay Kumar Mishra said, "Attendance through the app is mandatory as per govt orders. All BRCs were instructed to submit 100% compliance certificates, but none did so. Necessary steps will now be taken to ensure full implementation."
The situation has once again highlighted the challenges of enforcing digital monitoring in govt schools, as technological limitations and user resistance continue to hinder policy execution in the Indore district.

Dalit man attacked for sporting moustache, beard

Rajkot: A 27-year-old Dalit man was allegedly beaten up and subjected to casteist slurs by five people from the upper caste community in a village of Junagadh district, reportedly for sporting a moustache and a beard. The incident took place on Aug 11 in Vajli village of Visavadar taluka and came to light after the victim, Sagar Makwana, lodged a complaint with the Visavadar police station on Tuesday. Makwana's father-in-law was seriously injured in the attack. In the complaint lodged from his bed in the Junagadh Civil Hospital, Makwana named Shailesh Jebaliya, Lalo Bhupat Kathi Darbar, and three unidentified men. According to case details, Makwana, who resides in Manganath Pipli village, was towing his motorcycle after the vehicle broke down. As he was dragging the bike, Jebaliya and Bhupat confronted him, expressing their anger at him sporting a moustache and beard. They started hurling casteist abuses at him and warned him not to sport a look like people from the upper caste community, the FIR states. As the confrontation escalated and the three started beating him, Makwana managed to escape and reach his father-in-law Jivan Karsan's house, which was close by. Karsan advised that they talk to Jebaliya as he lived in the same village and resolve the issue. When they approached Jebaliya, Bhupat reached there in a car with three others. The five subjected the two men to casteist abuse and then assaulted them. As locals gathered at the spot, the assailants fled the scene. Villagers rushed the injured duo to the hospital, where Karsan's condition is said to be serious. Assistant superintendent of police (Visavadar) Rohit Kumar said, "The accused live in the same village as that of the complainant's father-in-law. A team has been formed to apprehend them, and they will be arrested soon. Makwana is a farm labourer." Police have registered a case under BNS sections of assault, unlawful assembly, rioting, and others, along with relevant provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Painter hacked to death in Udupi home, police link to revenge plot; 3 in arrested

UDUPI: A painter was hacked to death inside his Udupi home late on Tuesday, allegedly in a revenge attack carried out by three men armed with sharp weapons. The deceased is Vinay Devadiga, 40. Udupi SP Hariram Shankar said Soumya Shri, 31, of Puttur village, Subrahmanya Nagar, stated that Vinay left for Udupi at 10am on Tuesday and returned around 6.30pm. When she came home at 8.30pm, she found his phone ringing continuously, which their daughter had put on silent. Around 9.30pm, when Soumya Shri asked Vinay to have dinner, he said he had some work outside, but she urged him to go the next day. He agreed, and by 10pm, the couple, their daughter, and Vinay's mother had gone to bed in separate rooms. At 11:15 p.m., the complainant heard the sound of the gate opening, followed by loud banging on the door. She woke her mother-in-law, and when they opened the door, three men, including Akshendra, Ajith, and an unidentified person, entered. She claimed that she knew Akshendra and Ajith. The men tied the complainant's hands behind her back and kept asking for Vinay. She told them he was not home, but they ignored her and entered the house. She alleged that Akshendra was armed with a machete, Ajith with a long knife, and the third man with a knife. They searched the house for Vinay. The complainant pleaded with them to leave and speak the next day, but they ignored her. When they opened the door to a room opposite the hall, Vinay, who was inside, woke up. The attackers tried to snatch his phone. Ajith allegedly grabbed Vinay tightly to prevent his escape, while Akshendra hit him on the head with the machete, and the third man attacked him with the knife. She claimed that Vinay suffered deep cuts to his head, both arms, and forearms, leading to severe bleeding. He died on the spot. Their daughter left the room in fear. The attackers then fled the scene on a scooter at around 11:30 p.m. A case was registered at Udupi Town Police Station under Sections 329(4), 103(1) read with 3(5) of the BNS. Three Arrested SP Hariram Shankar said three accused, Akshendra alias Akshay, 34, Ajith, 28, and Pradeep Acharya, 29, from Kokkarne, Brahmavar, surrendered at the police station and were arrested. The third accused, Pradeep Acharya, was earlier an accused in a murder case reported at Bramhavar Police station in 2016. Preliminary investigation reveals that the murder was an act of revenge after Vinay allegedly shared a video in which accused Akshendra was being verbally abused by someone. The deceased Vinay himself was the prime accused in a murder case reported in Malpe police station in 2020 and was currently out on court bail, with the trial ongoing.
