Gunman ‘with grudge' kills five at Bangkok market
The victims included four security guards at the Or Tor Kor market in northern Bangkok, according to a police statement.
It said a vendor there was also killed, and that two others were wounded.
The market is next to the sprawling Chatuchak weekend market, which is popular with Thai and foreign tourists.
A statement by Bangkok's Metropolitan Police Commissioner issued several hours after the shooting said the gunman's wife told them that he had held a grudge against the security guards related to his car being scratched in 2019 or 2020.
The wife has a food stall at the market, the statement said.
'Mr Noi is a person who loves and is very protective of his car, and is also a violent person,' said the statement, identifying the suspect only by a nickname.
It said the gunman walked away after the shooting and shot himself with a handgun on a bench.
He had been wearing a black T-shirt, military-pattern shorts, a baseball cap and a backpack.
The statement stressed that the incident involved a personal conflict and was not linked to the border fighting with neighbouring Cambodia, as had been rumoured on social media.
Gun violence is not unusual in Thailand, which has fairly restrictive laws but also a high level of gun ownership.
The last mass shooting in Bangkok was in October 2023 when a teenage boy shot more than half a dozen people at the Paragon shopping centre with a modified blank pistol in the city's main shopping district, killing three people.
One of the country's worst mass killings occurred in October 2022 in the north-eastern province of Nong Bua Lamphua, when a police sergeant who had lost his job used guns and knives to kill 36 people, including two dozen toddlers at a day care centre.
In February 2020, a disgruntled Thai army soldier shot and killed 29 people, most at a shopping centre in the north-eastern city of Nakhon Ratchasima, before he was killed by police after an 18-hour stand-off.

One horse was killed and several others injured in Welland, Ont. after what Niagara police called a "disturbing act of animal cruelty." Police said in a news release on Friday, staff at a horse boarding farm found several horses with injuries "consistent with cuts and stab wounds" on Thursday morning. Eight horses were targeted, police said. One was found dead at the scene, another was moved to an emergency vet in Guelph, Ont., and the others were treated at the farm. An 'extremely devastating' loss Hingley said in his experience, he had never seen any "personal attack" on horses. He said in attending other incidents involving these animals and having friends who own them, he knows "horses are not pets to their owners, they're family members." "When there is a tragic loss to a horse, it's extremely devastating to the individuals," he added. Hingley said the ranch owners "have no idea" who could have targeted the ranch or horses. "We have to be open to everything, whether someone is upset with the ranch, whether someone is upset with a particular horse owner or all avenues in between there," he said. Niagara police said the investigation is ongoing and their Forensic Services Unit went to the scene and "conducted a thorough examination for evidence." Police are also asking other jurisdictions in the area if they've had similar reports. Hingley the incident happened between 11 p.m. on July 30 and 6 a.m. on July 31. "What we are appealing for right now is for anyone that may have been in the area driving at that time to go back, check their dash cam footage if they have some," he said. Person trying to access Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona fatally shot by security, officials say
Security at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base fatally shot a person Friday trying to illegally access the base just outside of Tucson, Arizona, officials said. Around 2:30 a.m., the suspect, a non-military civilian, failed to stop and identify themselves at the main gate, the Air Force said in a news release. The person was driving erratically, crashed into the deployed vehicle barrier and reversed the vehicle, the release said. A member of the security unit on the base, the 355th Security Forces Squadron, then shot the suspect. "We certainly regret the loss of life that occurred early this morning," Col. Jose Cabrera, the commander of the 355th Wing, said in a statement. "Our Defenders have a very difficult job and acted in accordance with their training and policy to ensure the security of the installation and safety of our Airmen." The base is home to 11,000 airmen from 34 unique mission partners, which support six combatant commanders around the world. It also serves as the retirement setting for some of the nation's most heralded military aircraft.
