IIT launches MRI research facility to foster innovation, AI integration
Spearheaded under the Institute of Eminence (IoE) initiative, the new centre is equipped with a 1.5 Tesla clinical-grade MRI scanner—marking a first-of-its-kind achievement among premier engineering and technology institutions in the country. The facility was inaugurated on Saturday by Prof. Rangan Banerjee, director of IIT Delhi.
Unlike conventional MRI setups embedded within hospital ecosystems, this facility is designed to foster unrestricted innovation in medical imaging, particularly in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
This facility will enable cutting-edge research in various areas across applications in MRI, including integration of artificial intelligence in image processing.
This landmark achievement represents a major stride in India's biomedical research capabilities and reaffirms IIT Delhi's commitment to driving innovation in healthcare technology. 'This new research MRI facility will enable research and innovation in imaging and support IIT Delhi's efforts to create new knowledge at the interface of science, engineering, and medicine to make an impact in healthcare,' said Prof. Banerjee.

Mamata Banerjee claims Kalyani AIIMS is conducting NRC survey under the guise of mental health assessment
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Monday alleged that Kalyani AIIMS is doing a survey for NRC indirectly in the name of mental health survey. 'Kalyani AIIMS is conducting a survey for NRC indirectly. I will urge the citizens, if any agency comes for any survey at your doorsteps, then you please fetch information about the same from the Government by raising a query. If the State is doing something then that will be informed but we will not take responsibility for any of these surveys,' Banerjee said at state secretariat Nabanna. 'Kalyani AIIMS is under the Central government but when it was set up, the state had provided the land. We have helped them. However, they did not inform us during any inauguration. What are they doing in the name of mental health?' the CM questioned She claimed that 'in the name of a mental health survey, work is being done on behalf of one party.' 'If they have the courage, why do they not work directly for the party? Is it because they do not have sufficient people? And I will tell AIIMS to work properly and treat patients with care. We have helped you and we will do so in the future,' Banerjee said and warned the premier institute not to 'play these games'. 'The Bengal government has its own Mental Health Department. It is not your duty. There are many such agencies which they [BJP] are using to remove names from the voter list. Be cautious and remain alert,' Banerjee warned, urging people not share information with anyone except state officials. Live Events Meanwhile, in a statement, Kalyani AIIMS authority said, ' This is to kindly inform you that AIIMS Kalyani is participating in the second phase of the National Mental Health Survey (NMHS) as a partner institution of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru.' 'The survey is being conducted in seven districts of West Bengal under the guidance and liaison of the Additional Director of Health Services (Mental Health), Department of Health & Family Welfare, Government of West Bengal. The questionnaires used in this survey have been duly validated by the World Health Organization (WHO) and NIMHANS, Bengaluru, ensuring high standards of scientific and ethical rigour,' it said. This survey is part of a nationwide initiative and is being conducted across all states and union territories of India to assess the mental health status and needs of the population, the statement pointed out.

Despite availability of Rs 17 crore CSR funding, purchase of CT scan machine delayed by over a month at Mumbai civic hospital as only one company responds to tender
Mumbai: Despite availability of corporate social responsibility funding of over Rs 17 crore, the BMC-run Nair Hospital near Mumbai Central railway station has not been able to secure a CT scan machine for over a month now. The reason is that only one company has responded to the tender, which was floated on July 25 with the end time listed as July 29. Despite three corrigendum notices extending the time — first to Aug 5, then to Aug 11 and finally to Aug 18 — there has been no other applicant. Nair Hospital dean Dr S Mohite said that the final decision on the tender would be taken by BMC higher-ups. "A lone bid doesn't ensure competitive pricing, and awarding a contract to a sole bidder could trigger allegations of favouritism,'' said the official. He said that in the case of Nair Hospital, a funding of Rs 17 crore from BPCL is already secure. "Given the patient load, which is now being managed with only one CT scan machine that was procured in 2023, a decision on approving the tender could be taken soon,'' the official said. Patients also have the option of visiting centres that have a tie-up with the BMC to offer CT scans at Rs 1,200 and MRI scans at Rs 2,500. Eliminating this one food for just 9 days can reduce fatty liver and reverse damage, as per US research findings
People commonly hear warnings about the negative impact of sugary drinks together with processed foods. Scientific studies demonstrate that fructose added to beverages and snacks, creates serious health threats. The sugar causes harm to your liver cells, which could result in serious medical conditions. However, there is good news now! Research reveals that eliminating added fructose for nine days will start to repair damaged liver tissue. Let's dig deeper.... How sugar harms your liver The liver develops fat deposits from fructose consumption which results in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) ranks as the leading liver disease among contemporary adults, and impacts approximately 30% of people living in developed nations. NAFLD exists in 90 percent of obese individuals and people with diabetes. Fructose differs from glucose, because it undergoes liver processing to become fat. The presence of liver fat leads to inflammation and causes damage to liver cells, which results in impaired liver operation. The condition results in both insulin resistance and increased risks of developing diabetes and heart disease, and various metabolic disorders. What do studies say Scientists at Touro University and the University of California, San Francisco conducted groundbreaking research with obese Latino and African-American youths who consumed high-fructose diets. The scientists exchanged fructose-rich foods with glucose-rich foods while maintaining the same daily calorie intake. A short period of nine days led to a significant 20% reduction in liver fat, according to MRI results and an enhancement of insulin sensitivity. The participants experienced liver benefits without significant weight changes because their body weight decreased by less than 1%, so the effects were directly related to fructose reduction. Research findings show that NAFLD in its early stages does not need to be permanent, because dietary modifications can reverse the condition within a short period. The culprit? Fructose High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) found in sodas and processed foods, has led to the increased presence of fructose in modern diets. Research demonstrates that eating large amounts of fructose creates two major health issues, which include fatty liver disease and obesity. The human body processes fructose from processed foods and drinks differently than natural sugars found in whole fruits, because these products contain fewer beneficial compounds such as fiber and antioxidants. The excessive amount of fructose consumption causes liver damage through fat accumulation and metabolic disturbances. Quitting processed sugar When people replace sugary beverages and processed foods with starches and natural foods containing whole sugars, their livers become healthier while decreasing their chances of diabetes and heart disease. Simple dietary changes according to the Touro-UCSF study demonstrate that they can effectively fight against increasing health issues. Practical steps to protect your liver Replace all sugary drinks and sodas with water, herbal tea or natural water infused with fruits. Look for processed foods which contain high-fructose corn syrup and added sugars by checking labels to avoid them in snacks and cereals and sauces. Eat whole foods that contain natural sugars with fiber content, instead of processed foods. Home cooking allows you to maintain control over ingredients and sugar content. Limit your consumption of 100% fruit juices, because their fructose content remains high despite the lack of added sugars. Consult your doctor: If you have obesity, diabetes, or suspect fatty liver disease, seek medical advice early. Sodas and processed foods contain sugar that functions as a hazardous substance, which causes harm to liver tissue and metabolic wellness. Reducing your fructose consumption for a short period allows you to establish both protective measures, and reverse existing liver damage which supports future health.
