Boxing great Julio César Chávez defends son arrested by US immigration agents

Independent07-07-2025
As a professional, Julio César Chávez fought 115 times in the ring. Now, the former world champion said he was ready to fight outside of it to defend his same-name son, who was arrested by U.S. immigration agents at his Los Angeles home for overstaying his visa and lying on a green card application.
The 39-year-old Chávez Junior also has an active warrant for his arrest in Mexico for alleged arms and drug trafficking and suggested ties to the Sinaloa Cartel.
'It's complicated, there's a lot of talk, but we're calm because we know my son's innocence,' the elder Chavez told El Heraldo newspaper. 'My son will be anything you want, anything, but he is not a criminal and less everything he's being accused of.'
Alejandro Gertz Manero, Mexico's Attorney General, said on Sunday that the investigation against Chávez Junior started in 2019 after a complaint filed by U.S. authorities against the Sinaloa Cartel for organized crime, human trafficking, arms trafficking, and drug trafficking.
'He knows a lot of people, we live in Culiacan, it would be impossible not to know all of the people that are doing illicit stuff, but that does not mean nothing,' Chavez said. 'In my time I met everybody, and they did not come after me.'
Chávez senior was considered one of the best Mexican boxers of all time; a world champion at three divisions. In the 1980s and '90s he was a huge celebrity who mixed with drug dealers. He claimed in the past to have been friends with drug lord Amado Carrillo Fuentes.
Gertz Manero said Chavez Junior's lawyers have requested at least five injunctions in Mexico, which have been rejected because the boxer is still in the United States.
'Lawyers in the United States are working to see if he stays there, and we're prepared if he comes here," Chavez senior said. "We'll fight under Mexican law if he's transferred here."
The son's arrest came only days after the former middleweight champion lost to influencer-turned-boxer Jake Paul in a bout in Anaheim, California.
The Department of Homeland Security said officials determined Chávez Junior should be arrested on June 27, the day before the fight. It was unclear why they waited to act for days after the high-profile event.
'Why did they let him fight? My son has been paying taxes in the United States for three years, and now in Mexico they're accusing him of money laundering," Chavez senior said. "Yes, he knows those people, but that doesn't mean I'm a drug trafficker. Let's trust the law.'

Inside millionaire neighborhood tearing itself apart after American Idol exec was murdered: Illegal parties, naked women and gunfire

American Idol music supervisor Robin Kaye and her husband, Thomas DeLuca, were allegedly tormented by a neighbor's 'illegal' wild parties in the years leading up to their horrific murders, according to a lawsuit seen by the Daily Mail. The latest party occurred 16 days after the gruesome execution-style slayings of Kaye and DeLuca, both 70, that shocked Democrat-run Los Angeles amid rising fear and rancor over violent crime. KCAL News reported a shot was possibly fired during the most recent event directly next to the late couple's mansion in Encino, California, on Saturday evening. Now, the Daily Mail can exclusively report that their next door neighbor has been hit with a civil lawsuit over the notorious 'party house' which allegedly plagues residents in the upscale community located 20 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. In the filing, Ramin Kohanoff, owner of 4777 White Oak Avenue, is accused of creating a 'significant nuisance' with 'illegal parties' on the normally quiet, tree-lined, residential street - the complaint describes them as 'large unruly gatherings'. It alleges Kohanoff has been hosting 'unlawful Party House events within the past five years, regularly attracting over 100 partygoers' who are 'charged admission'. Authorities say Kaye and DeLuca were callously cut down in cold blood by alleged assailant Raymond Boodarian, 22, on July 10 during a violent home invasion when they returned home from a shopping trip. They were both shot multiple times - including in the head - with their own weapon, which investigators revealed was recovered at Boodarian's rented Reseda townhome where he lived with his mother and sister. It took four days for LAPD officers to find the victims' bodies in separate rooms inside their $4.5 million property. The Daily Mail previously reported that their deaths occurred just hours after they attended a meeting on July 9 with LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell to discuss neighborhood safety amid surging crime in the area. Neighborhoods First, a non-profit punching back against the parties, filed the 'complaint for public nuisance' with LA Superior Court on July 18 - just eight days after the shocking deaths. Sources tell the Daily Mail that partygoers have to purchase tickets to attend. According to the suit, the parties continue until after midnight and include 'loud music and noise' with illegal parking, leading to 'significant garbage including food, liquor and beer bottles and cans… left on the street and on neighbors' properties.' It alleges Kohanoff ignored a cease and desist letter sent in December 2021 which requested he limit noise to before 10pm. Another letter was sent in May 2024 two days after another party that caused 'significant impacts on the surrounding neighbors,' per the filing, which was also ignored, per the filing. Separately, court records show the 52-year-old businessman previously pled no contest to a felony stalking charge. The nuisance suit, obtained by the Daily Mail, claims that LAPD officers 'shut down' a party on June 7 and 'ordered partygoers to leave'. Despite being cited by the LAPD, the complaint says 'Defendants have disregarded such citations and demands to cease and desist. 'The egregious wrongful and illegal uses of the Property for Party House events were done with a conscious disregard for the surrounding neighbors' rights to the reasonable peaceful enjoyment of their residential properties as well as the extended residential neighborhood.' Property records show that Kohanoff purchased the six-bedroom, six-bathroom, 7,400-square-foot home for $3,495,000 in 2018. Neighborhoods First is asking the court to have the parties curtailed and is seeking unspecified costs and attorneys' fees. The suit is signed by Richard Mirisch, secretary of the California non-profit and a Hollywood producer with films including The Matrix, Gothika, Black Mass and The Flash on his list of credits. The savage murders have rattled residents of Encino where celebrities such as Machine Gun Kelly, Michael B. Jordan and Matt LeBlanc have homes. Actor Josh Duhamel also owns a six-bedroom, seven-bathroom, 8,000 -square-foot mansion a short drive from the party house which he purchased for $6 million in 2023, according to public records. The new suit was filed by lawyers who work with attorney Rob Glushon, who is also president of the Encino Property Owners Association. He told the Daily Mail that partygoers often urinate on lawns along the same street, and that up to roughly 100 homes in the immediate area are impacted by the noise and disturbance. Over the years Glushon 'discussed strategies' with Kaye for dealing with the parties. 'She was obviously upset,' Glushon recalled. 'She had it worse because she was the most directly impacted.' He previously told the Daily Mail of the murders: 'We just couldn't be more saddened and shocked at what has occurred in the neighborhood.' He honored Kaye's efforts to help promote neighborhood safety, and described her as 'someone who wasn't just complaining about things, but was trying to do something about it.' She was a 'good neighbor' who 'believed in the mantra, if you see something, say something'. Neighbor Naomi Sadoun, 69, lives on the other side of the so-called party house. She told the Daily Mail her bedroom overlooks its back yard and she can see naked women cavorting during the parties. She described Kaye and DeLuca as 'lovely people. It's terrible what has happened to them. They didn't deserve this.' Kaye with Singer La'Porsha Renae (left) and producer Randy Jackson (center) in 2017 Kaye worked as the music supervisor for singing competition American Idol for the last 15 seasons - nearly 300 episodes - per her IMDB page. Over the years, she won several Guild of Music Supervisors Awards for her work on the show. She also worked on Lip Sync Battle, Hollywood Game Night and Worn Stories, among other shows. 'We know that [Kohanoff] ignores the city LAPD citations,' Glushon told the Daily Mail. 'He's been cited at least three times and fined. He doesn't respond to our letters and he doesn't care about the neighbors.' Glushon, who lives close to the party house, declared the organization had been forced to file the lawsuits due to the gravity of the parties and because 'the city doesn't do anything'. He rebuked local law enforcement for not doing more to combat crime in the area and insisted such lawlessness 'would never be tolerated' in other cities within LA County. He argued that LA, run by Democrat mayor Karen Bass, is 'systemically dysfunctional' and said, 'Why do we have homeless on the streets when it's illegal?' Bass, Glushon said, had been 'responsive since the murders' and has directed additional police officers to be deployed in Encino, although he believes the beefed up resources are merely a stopgap. 'Right now, it's kind of hard to drive around Encino without seeing a black line, which is good,' he added, 'but we know that that's not going to last.' He previously told the Daily Mail 'a majority of people do not feel safe. Compared with other cities and populations, we have the fewest number of police officers per capita. 'We are so deficient compared to Chicago, New York and other cities.' Murder suspect Boodarian has a history of mental illness, court records show. He has been charged with two counts of murder as well as other offenses in relation to the deaths. He is currently being held without bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown LA and is expected to enter a plea during a scheduled court appearance on August 20. An LAPD spokesperson told the Daily Mail of Saturday's party that 'officers responded to radio calls of a loud party, as well as one call for shots fired, on the 4700 block of White Oak Avenue.' 'There was no evidence of shots fired or an assault with a deadly weapon. Officers shut down the large party and a citation was issued.' Officers were on scene atn5:45pm and left after two hours and 40 minutes. When contacted by the Daily Mail, Kohanoff said he was unaware of the lawsuit. He added that he had told an LAPD officer on Saturday that he would stop hosting the parties. 'I told them I'm not going to do it anymore,' he said, adding that 'someone else' had organized the Saturday event. He declined to comment about the murders of his neighbors other than to say 'I was in Vegas' when they occurred.

Maroon 5 vet Mickey Madden's wife is seen for the first time since she accused him of abuse

Mickey Madden's wife, Catherine 'Kate' Blair Bowman, has been spotted for the first time since she filed a restraining order against the former bassist for Maroon 5. Bowman accused Madden of attacking her when she accused him of sexting teenagers. She had a somber expression on her face as she stepped out of the Los Angeles home she once shared with the bassist on Thursday. The 37-year-old wore a fitted, white polo shirt paired with gray shorts, black leather ballet flats and a Chateau Marmont x Gucci bag on her shoulder as she walked to her car. This sighting comes just as Madden's former bandmate Adam Levine performed on the Today show in NYC. On Friday, Levine was in New York City, performing in Rockefeller Plaza alongside the rest of his bandmates. He looked effortlessly stylish in a denim jacket, which he wore open to showcase his bare, tattooed chest. He paired the outerwear with blue slacks and a brown, leather belt to complete his look as he and his band members performed some of their most popular hits. Currently, Maroon 5 consists of Levine as vocalist and frontman alongside rhythm guitarist-keyboardist Jesse Carmichael, lead guitarist James Valentine, drummer Matt Flynn, keyboardist PJ Morton as well as bassist Sam Farrar. Late last month, Bowman filed a restraining order against Madden, accusing him of domestic violence. In legal documents, she claimed that she had confronted him about him texting teenage girls before he started getting physically violent. 'He physically abused me,' Bowman said in court documents filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, in regard to a series of events which unfolded on July 21. 'I'm now terrified of him.' Bowman said the bass player went 'insane' after she asked him about the alleged messages with the teenage girls, which allegedly centered around a rape fantasy. He previously took a leave from the band following an arrest for alleged domestic violence. At the time, he was not married and the identity of the alleged victim was not revealed. He has been married to Bowman for over four years; pictured November 2022 in West Hollywood Madden went 'insane' when Bowman asked him about the situation, Bowman told the court, grabbing her arms and slamming her body against a kitchen counter. 'He pulled me to the ground and was out of his mind,' Bowman told the court in her filing. Daily Mail has reached out to reps for the band, and an Instagram account Mickey Madden appears to run, for further comment on the story. Bowman described her efforts to flee the dangerous situation in her court filing. 'I managed to move around and escape him, got up, and ran out of the house to escape him,' she said. She continued: 'He ran after me in his underwear and barefoot, caught up to me, shoved me against the gate, and then tried to grab me back to the house.' Bowman said that she 'managed to escape and ran to the street' but Madden 'found [her] twice in different locations, physically abusing me each time.' She included screengrabs in her filing from ring camera footage to support her claims. Bowman tried to retrieve Madden's phone, and says she wound up leaving the home afraid for her life. Bowman was able to rummage through the contents of the phone after she ran down the street and hid between cars after escaping the enraged musician's clutches, she said in court documents. She told the court that Madden had never shown that level of outrage prior to their marriage. Bowman was pointed out to the text-related allegations against Madden by a stranger, she said in the court filing. Bowman told the court that she subsequently moved out of the home and has been residing with a friend in the wake of the conflict, she said in the court filing. Bowman told the court that Madden told her he was sorry via text message, and that he was planning on seeking help for sex addiction. She said she was concerned about Madden's potential mercurial reaction when he sees that she used a credit card of theirs to hire a lawyer in the wake of the July 21 incident. Bowman has asked for a restraining order preventing Madden from approaching within 100 yards of her person, place of business, residence or vehicle. Bowman said that Madden has exerted monetary control over her for the duration of their four-year-plus marriage. Bowman said said she has since started working a job, and is concerned that Madden will try to track her down at her work. She added that she's put a deposit down for an apartment where she will reside. Bowman is asking for expenses, in addition to custody of a pair of Siberian Husky dogs they own named Jam and Toast.

I forgave my partner for affair with my best pal eight years ago – but I still can't forget it or move on

DEAR DEIDRE: A BLACK lace bra was all the evidence I needed that my wife was having an affair with my best friend. His wife told me what was going on after she found the underwear stuffed down the side of her bed. When she told me the bra size, my blood ran cold as I realised it was the same size my wife wore. This was eight years ago but I still can't forget it or move on. I'm a man of 42 and have been with my partner for 15 years. She's 37. Our relationship was great until I got a job where I worked in the US for several months of the year. When I was in Los Angeles, the time difference made it hard for us to communicate, and my partner told me she felt lonely in the evenings. She started going out with her friends more — at least, that's what she told me. At the time, I trusted her. But a few weeks before I returned home, I got a message from my best friend's wife asking me to call. When we FaceTimed, she was in bits. She said my wife had been spending a lot of time with her husband. My partner hadn't told me about this — which seemed suspicious in itself. Then my friend's wife said she had been changing their bed when she found a lacy black bra tucked under the mattress. Spotting the signs your partner is cheating She said my partner was the only woman who had visited her house and told me the bra size. When I came home, I confronted my partner and my best friend individually. They both said I was paranoid. Soon after, my best friend's marriage broke up. Our friendship has never been the same. I have tried to forget what happened, to forgive my partner and carry on with our life together but it still troubles me to this day. What do you advise I should do? DEIDRE SAYS: The evidence was circumstantial but your gut told you the two people closest to you had cheated. As they both denied it, you chose to try to forgive and forget. Unfortunately, eight years later, it's clear that you haven't been able to do that. Try talking to your partner again. Ask her to be honest so you can put this issue to bed once and for all. First, think about how you will react if she finally admits to an affair, and whether you would want to break up or simply need the truth for closure. Having couples counselling would be wise, so you can deal with this in a safe environment. Contact (020 7380 1975) for an appointment. My support pack, Cheating, Can You Get Over It?, should help. THANK YOU FOR HELPING AS LOAN LEFT ME SUICIDAL DEAR DEIDRE: AFTER I took out a loan that I couldn't afford to pay back, I became scared to open my front door in case debt collectors turned up. When I first saw the loan advertised online, it seemed like the answer to my prayers. But the interest rate was high and when my circumstances changed, I couldn't keep making the monthly repayments. I'm a 53-year-old single woman. I was so stressed, it was making me ill. I couldn't sleep or eat and sometimes I felt suicidal. You told me that no amount of money owed was worth ending my life over and gave me details of the Samaritans ( 116 123). You praised me for asking for help and advised me to see my GP. You suggested I read your support packs, Solving Debt Problems and Family Finances, and recommended I contact the charity Step Change ( for debt solutions. I took your advice and made an appointment with my doctor. She told me not to look at my bank account every day, to help with stress. I also got advice from a debt charity. Six months on, I have finally finished paying my loan. I won't ever take out another one again! Thank you for supporting me through a stressful time. Well done on paying off your loan. It must be a huge relief for you not to owe any more money. I'm glad I could help. DEAR DEIDRE: EVEN though I've been with my husband for 20 years, he still talks about his teenage sweetheart – and I can't compete. They had a child together when they were 18, but my husband had no contact with his son or the boy's mother for almost four decades. In the meantime, we met, married and had two children. I'm 49 and he's 57. However, a few months ago, his son got in touch out of the blue to say his mother had died. Since then, my husband has become obsessed with his dead ex. He plays 'their song' – the track they danced to at a school party – looks back through old photos, and has even told his son his mum was the love of his life. They were, he says, just too young for it to work. He doesn't seem to care what impact this is having on me. It really hurts. It feels like our whole life together has meant nothing to him, that I'm second best. He says I'm being ridiculous and he loves me. But I'm on the brink of leaving because it's all too painful. Why is he acting like this? DEIDRE SAYS: It sounds like your husband is finding it difficult to deal with the death of his first love, and the reappearance of his son. He may be feeling a complicated combination of emotions – grief, regret, guilt, nostalgia for his youth – feelings he has never dealt with, which he is now trying to work through. That's not an excuse for his selfish behaviour towards you, but it might explain it. Be patient with him. It doesn't mean he doesn't love you. Try to be supportive and give him time to deal with this, but be honest about how hard this is for you. Encourage him to seek bereavement counselling. My support pack, Coping With Bereavement, has details of how to go about this. TEENAGE TROUBLES DEAR DEIDRE: I MOVED to Scotland to be with my boyfriend but now I miss home so much I'm having doubts about our relationship. We met in London but he's got a job in Edinburgh. We didn't want to be apart, so I agreed to go with him. He's 21 and I'm 19. I love him but after six months here, I'm so lonely and isolated, away from all my friends and family. We're arguing a lot and I'm scared we'll end up splitting. But it's too far for a long-distance relationship. DEIDRE SAYS: Building a life in a new place is hard. Tell him how you feel. You moved for him, so he needs to make an effort to help you make friends. Check out local groups and meet-ups. My support pack, Feeling Lonely?, should help, too. Also, invite your friends and family to stay and plan regular trips back home. NO DESIRE TO ROMP WITH WIFE DEAR DEIDRE: SEX with my wife is a total flop – even though I have no problem keeping an erection when I'm pleasuring myself. For some reason, I just have no desire to be intimate with her any more. We're both upset about it. Now I'm wondering if I should find another woman online to test out what happens if I try to have sex. I'm 56, my wife is 48, we have been married for 20 years and have three children. Until last year, I had a high sex drive and we made love frequently. But my libido has gradually disappeared to the point that I can't get or maintain an erection when we want to get physically intimate. Even taking Viagra didn't help. But masturbating isn't a problem. Trying sex with another woman would clarify if the issue is with my relationship. But I'd feel guilty. I love my wife and don't want to cheat. How can I resolve this? DEIDRE SAYS: Finding another woman for sex is not the answer. The guilt could well affect your ability to perform – and it's wrong to use a person to diagnose your issue. If you can masturbate to climax, it seems likely your problem is psychological. And the more you worry about your erections disappearing, the more likely this is to happen. My support pack, Solving Erection Problems, has more information on this, and how to get help. You and your wife need to discuss what's happening and find if there is a deeper, perhaps unacknowledged, problem in your relationship. Couples counselling may be worth pursuing.
