The Eagles and Browns are warming up and will meet on the field for the third time this week. This time, it will be a more formal competition in the mode of a preseason game, with starters for both teams sitting out. Saturday afternoon offers another chance for players on the roster bubble and under-the-radar performers to carve out a role on a Super Bowl-contending team with very few holes or available opportunities at key positions.
With kickoff fast approaching, we're looking at five position battles to watch.
WR
The Eagles carried five wide receivers on their 53-man roster when they boarded a plane to Brazil last September. If that model remains the same, Johnny Wilson, Ainias Smith, Darius Cooper, Elijah Cooks, and Terrace Marshall are among the players vying for the final two or three roster spots.
OL
Philadelphia has a starting offensive line that's among the best in the NFL. Ten other players will compete for four or five remaining roster spots. During this week's joint practice, Matt Pryor started at right tackle with the first-team offense. Brett Toth was the first-team left guard in place of Dickerson. Darian Kinnard and Kendall Lamm offer versatility as swing tackles. Rookies Cameron Williams, Myles Hinton, and Drew Kendall are vying for roster spots as well. Trevor Keegan and Kenyon Green are also competing.
Edge Rusher
Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt are the starting pass rushers, while Josh Uche, Azeez Ojulari, and Ogbo Okoronkwo are all candidates.
LB
Zack Baun is an All-Pro, and the Eagles would like to have Jihaad Campbell assume the starting role opposite. Jeremiah Trotter Jr. is improving daily, while Smael Mondon is an athletic marvel.
Safety
Sydney Brown took most of the snaps as the first-team safety in nickel this week, and he's best when he can be a downhill disruptor. Andrew Makuba will make his preseason in-game debut.
CB
Adoree' Jackson has started to log the majority of first-team reps, starting opposite Quinyon Mitchell. Saturday will see all three contenders get reps, with Jakorian Bennett likely being the biggest benefactor.

Jakorian Bennett shows starting cornerback potential in Eagles' preseason loss to Browns

Bennett may be closing in on the CB2 job after an impressive outing vs. Cleveland The Eagles' cornerback battle opposite Quinyon Mitchell is still ongoing, with Kelee Ringo, Adoree' Jackson, and Jakorian Bennett all vying for the job. Bennett entered the competition late, but he may be leading the race after Philadelphia's preseason game vs. the Cleveland Browns. Bennett had several quality reps against the Browns' receivers on Saturday. In the first quarter, he kept up with Dionate Johnson downfield after a double move and made slight physical contact, but no call was made. Later in the second quarter, Bennett showed his closing speed while breaking up a pass intended for rookie wideout Gage Larvadain. Bennett's ability to make up ground makes him an intriguing option at cornerback. Ringo and Jackson have failed to impress so far in camp, allowing the former Raider to seize his opportunity. "I'm a person that loves to prepare and that needs preparation. I'm going to do everything I need to do to study the right way and just catch up to where the guys are right now," Bennett said after the trade "I'm just trying to be the best version of JB. I know the player I can be and whatever that is, that's football. That's my goal: Be the best version of myself." Bennett left the game in the first half with an apparent left arm injury but later returned.

K.J. Henry Lifts Dillon Gabriel-led Browns to Preseason Win vs. Eagles

The Cleveland Browns had to turn to other quarterbacks with rookie Shedeur Sanders injured. The decisive touchdown came on defense instead of from relief quarterbacks. K.J. Henry returned an interception 45 yards for a score in the third quarter to send the Browns to a 22-13 preseason win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday. In a game missing almost all regular-season starters on both sides — Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley sat out for the defending Super Bowl champions while Myles Garrett and Jerry Jeudy rested for the Browns — the Eagles got a better look at their draft picks fighting for playing time. Andrew Mukuba returned an interception 75 yards for a score and recovered a fumble, and Jihaad Campbell had a sack, an impressive showing for the Eagles' top two 2025 draft picks. Maybe somewhere actor Matthew McConaughey was impressed. McConaughey, a Texas Longhorns superfan, had a social media post in support of Mukuba when the safety was drafted out of Texas in the second round. Mukuba missed time early in training camp with a shoulder injury and returned only in the last few days to take first-team reps. He was in the right spot to pick off a pass from Dillon Gabriel. Mukuba took it all the way for the 75-yard score and a 7-6 lead. He added a fumble recovery later and broke up a pass in the second half, the kind of plays needed to close the gap in his competition with Sydney Brown for the starting spot. Campbell, a linebacker out of Alabama selected 31st overall, sacked Gabriel on the second play of the game. The Eagles just may have found two more defensive gems to make meaningful contributions in their pursuit of another title. The Eagles and Browns both played it safe with their starters after the two teams held a pair of joint practices earlier in the week. Sanders hurt his oblique in the first practice and did not play Saturday. The Browns started Gabriel, a third-round pick who worked his way back into the lineup after he had been sidelined with an injured hamstring. Gabriel was 13 of 18 passing for 143 yards and the pick-6. Tyler "Snoop" Huntley played in the second half and was 10 of 13 for 71 yards. Dorian Thompson-Robinson threw a pick-6 to Henry that gave Cleveland a 19-13 lead in the third. Thompson-Robinson was replaced by Kyle McCord, another 2025 draft pick, in the next series. McCord, who is from nearby Mount Laurel, New Jersey, and was raised as an Eagles fan, threw a touchdown pass and threw for 47 yards overall. The Eagles had just 88 total yards. Sanders, who covered his head with a towel as he watched from the sideline, didn't play after he sustained an oblique injury during drills ahead of practice Wednesday. The Browns said he is day to day. Sanders completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards with two first-half touchdown passes to Kaden Davis in his NFL preseason debut in a win in the opener over Carolina. The 40-year-old Joe Flacco, in the mix to start the season opener, also sat out. And Kenny Pickett didn't play as he recovers from a hamstring injury. Yes, Thompson-Robinson threw the pick-6, but he wasn't helped by a high snap from Brett Toth. Toth played at center and Drew Kendall was at left guard as the Eagles tried to get by without the injured Landon Dickerson. Dickerson has been sidelined since he suffered a right knee injury at an open practice. The Eagles have not given a timeline for his absence or ruled him out for the season opener. The Browns host the Rams on Saturday. The Eagles play Friday at the Jets. Reporting by The Associated Press. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? How did Dillon Gabriel play today? Grading Browns rookie QB vs. Eagles

Another week, another rookie quarterback makes his debut for the Cleveland Browns. One week after Shedeur Sanders shined in his pro debut, it was Dillon Gabriel's turn to run the offense for Cleveland in Week 2. Gabriel remained at the controls for the entire first half as the Browns possessed the ball five times in the opening 30 minutes. Tyler Huntley came on in relief for the former Oregon quarterback at the start of the second half, closing the book on Gabriel's debut. The third-round rookie undoubtedly faced some added pressure coming into this contest, especially after Sanders' performance in Week 1. As the Browns quarterback battle heats up, Gabriel made sure to throw his hat into the ring. Here's how the rookie fared in his first NFL action. Dillon Gabriel grade: Browns rookie solid in debut Gabriel completed 13-of-18 pass attempts, finishing with 143 yards, an interception and a lost fumble. He targeted 10 different receivers in his debut. After taking a sack on his second play from scrimmage, Gabriel kept his poise in the pocket, stepping up and delivering a 3rd-and-10 completion to Blake Whiteheart. There were some happy feet at times as he bounced around behind the line, however. Gabriel did seem hesistant to scramble, which is understandable considering his hamstring injury – bringing some extra attention to his arm talent. The rookie showed off his accuracy in his first preseason action, which was highlighted by the ball placement on a 3rd-and-5 completion to Jamari Thrash on the opening drive. Cleveland would march for a touchdown on the opening drive. More important, the quarterback wasn't a passenger in his first series. The second drive would look like a lot more of the same, until it didn't. Gabriel delivered another on-time pass to Cedric Tillman – the good on this possession. The bad was how he opened the second quarter. Gabriel tossed a pick-six to Andrew Mukuba – a throw that the quarterback will want back. Gabriel didn't get any help from his teammates on this play, who shied away from the ball as it was headed their way. However, the rookie can't make that throw in traffic and will learn that throwing it away is a better decision in that situation. The quarterback would later cough up a fumble on a handoff, which we'll likely attribute to his hindered mobility. Still, that is something that will need to be cleaned up. In a two-minute drill to end the half, Gabriel marched the Browns into field goal range before the end of the half, highlighted by a 29-yard connection to Kaden Davis. The Browns rookie had no shortage of action in this contest, getting some extended run given the injuries facing the team's quarterback room. Grade: B Gabriel's performance had some highs and lows, but it was still a solid day at the office. The mistakes will need to be cleaned up, but we'll consider his limited mobility from the hamstring injury as something that balances the score. The quarterback flashed accuracy and timing, unfazed by concerns about his lack of size. Despite pressure from the Eagles defense, he remained mostly poised throughout. The Browns and their fans should be pleased with Gabriel's outing. Now the hope will be that both Gabriel and Sanders can suit up in the preseason finale to allow for a better comparison between the two.
