When David Clark-Wilson visited Canada for a work trip in 1994, he never imagined he would end up retiring there.
Less than a year after his 11-day visit, he and his wife Judy, along with their daughter Charlotte, then nine, and son Oliver, seven, moved from their home in Woking, Surrey to Vancouver, on Canada's west coast.
'We wanted more space, fewer people, less congestion and less busyness,' he says. 'The schools were good, and there was a nice community. We didn't necessarily think we would stay.'
Clark-Wilson worked as a business consultant in England before buying a health and hair company in Canada, and later starting an LED lighting company.
'I was 43, had a lovely family, and the pound was double the Canadian dollar, so we rented a house in the mountains with a pool for about £2,000 a month,' he says.
Decades later, he is now 73, and has made the decision to stay put and retire in Vancouver. For Clark-Wilson, the appeal of Canada was instantly obvious: 'It's beautiful. There are mountains, trails and beaches – you can be skiing in the morning and swimming in the ocean by the afternoon.'
Having children in school made it easier to make friends, and the family quickly settled into their new life. But then tragedy struck – a year after arriving, Judy was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and died aged 41.
'Suddenly, I was in a foreign country with two children and no family support. It was a very difficult time,' said Clark-Wilson. However, he decided it was better to stay in Canada than uproot again.
Clark-Wilson now lives in West Vancouver, with a large garden overlooking the ocean. He plays table tennis several times a week, and teaches the sport to children. He also plays cricket and is writing a novel.
'The positives of coming here are the space and natural beauty, and the weather is better than England,' he says.
Vancouver is eight hours behind England, so planning is important to keep in touch with family back home. 'You get used to speaking with people when you wake up. And my sister and I play a lot of online Scrabble together,' he says.
He travels back to England, where his son Oliver now lives, at least once a year. Every two years, he visits Australia, where his daughter Charlotte now lives.
'I do miss British humour and the sense of community in Britain,' says Clark-Wilson. 'The downsides of living here are that you are miles from anywhere, so can be quite isolated – you need to be prepared to travel.
'But the decision about where to retire was more open because my children aren't here. Will I stay in Canada forever? Who knows.'
There are an estimated 530,000 British expats living in Canada, about 133,000 of whom are retirees. So what do you need to consider if you're considering joining their ranks?
How much tax will you pay?
While it is possible to live in Canada for up to six months with a simple Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) – which is a requirement for most people flying to, or even just passing through, a Canadian airport – staying longer requires either a specific visa or sponsorship.
If you have family in the country, it may be possible to get sponsorship, but otherwise work-related visas are usually the best option – though this can be problematic for someone who has already retired.
Income tax is a two-tier system – the Government sets a federal rate of income tax, which is paid in addition to a rate set by each province.
The basic rate of federal income tax is 15pc, paid on earnings up to C$57,375 (£30,725), up to a top rate of 33pc paid on earnings above C$253,414 (£135,700).
As for provincial rates, residents of British Columbia, for example, which includes Vancouver, then pay a further 5.06pc on earnings up to C$49,279 (£26,390), up to a top rate of 20.5pc on earnings above C$259,829 (£139,140).
There is a reciprocal tax agreement in place between the UK and Canada, so you should not be taxed twice on the same income.
Pension problems
It is possible to move a personal pension into an overseas scheme while living abroad, but be sure to check the rules carefully. It is often best to take professional advice.
Many people opt for an international self-invested personal pension (Sipp), which is effectively the same as a UK Sipp, where your money is left invested and can be drawn down flexibly – but this allows you to do so in multiple countries and currencies.
Those who prefer an annuity can get this paid into their Canadian bank account, as long as their provider makes international payments.
James Rayburn, of expat financial advisers, Wealth Genesis, says: 'Make sure you get a nil tax (NT) code when you leave the UK to let HMRC know you are no longer a resident, or you may end up paying emergency tax on any pension income. Once you have this code, any money you receive from a UK pension source should be paid gross.'
You can claim the UK state pension in Canada but, unlike in many other countries, it will not be uprated each year. Under the triple lock, UK pensioners see their state pension payment increase annually by the highest of inflation, average wage growth or 2.5pc. Those living in certain countries, such as France and Spain, still enjoy this annual increase, but others do not.
As a result, the amount of state pension you get is frozen at the level when you first claimed it, which effectively means the benefit is worth less in real terms each year as inflation pushes up the cost of living.
Interactive Investor, the wealth manager, estimates that about 450,000 British pensioners are affected by this. It calculates that they could miss out on almost £70,000 in state pension income over a 20-year retirement, assuming the state pension increased by 3.7pc a year.
Myron Jobson, from Interactive Investor, says: 'Over time, this can seriously erode your spending power. Planning ahead is key – consider topping up any gaps in your national insurance record to maximise what you are entitled to. Deferring your state pension can boost the amount you get, though it still won't get uprated in future years.'
Plan ahead
Don't forget your other assets. Money in an Isa loses its tax protection once you move it to another country, so is best left untouched until needed, and particularly if you think you might return to the UK in the future. However, as long as you're out of the country, you won't be able to add any more funds to the account.
Assets left in the UK will continue to be liable for inheritance tax after you die, so those with property, for example, could consider selling, says Rayburn.
'Other things to consider include life insurance – check it still covers you overseas – and your will,' he says.
Some countries have forced heirship rules, which dictate where your assets go when you die. This isn't the case in Canada, but there are similar mandatory support obligations that make disinheriting a spouse or child very difficult, according to the International Bar Association.
Also bear in mind that any power of attorney you have in place may not apply in another country, so find out what the equivalent is and apply in good time.
'It can be worth taking advice, but make sure the adviser is regulated, qualified and independent, and check you understand the fees that you are paying,' adds Rayburn.
Canada has a public healthcare system, Medicare, but rather than being centrally run, each province is responsible for its own provision. As a result, the extent of cover and the standard of care can vary.

Terrified British tourists were forced to race back to their Hawaii cruise ship after alarms were raised about an incoming tsunami. The US state alongside the west coast of the US and Canada were issued warnings about a potential tsunami after an 8.7 magnitude earthquake hit the Kamchatka peninsula in Russia. Rachael Burrows, from Macclesfield, Cheshire, is currently on a cruise off the coast of Hawaii and was touring the Big Island when warnings first started. They were forced to rush back to the ship before it left for safer waters, but 600 holidaymakers were left behind when the ship departed. She said she was first warned about the tsunami when an alert came up on her phone. She told BBC Breakfast: 'We were on a tour around the volcanic area of the Big Island. 'Towards the end of the tour, as we were luckily heading towards the cruise ship, we started getting emergency warnings sign on our phones. 'The first one was tsunami you are in immediate danger, you need to move away from the coast to higher ground.' The tour guide was at first dismissive of the warning, saying they happened all the time and it 'won't be anything'. Ms Burrows added: 'We started getting more through saying times when the tsunami would hit. 'He was going to stop at a chocolate factory that is famous on the island. As we pulled up to it, the traffic on the island was getting really bad which he said was unusual. 'As we pulled up to the factory the shop owner said we need to go.' The tour stopped as more people were evacuating and the group were hurried back to the ship. 'It was quite scary because all the sirens started going off in the area,' Ms Burrows said. 'We got off the tour bus and everyone was running trying to get on the cruise ship, because we needed to get out to sea. 'We were luckily some of the last ones to get on the cruise ship. Then we could see a lot of other people getting dropped off and lining up, but they didn't make it. 'They were then told to get to higher ground on shore.' The captain set off out to sea and then reassured passengers that they were at a safe distance. Tsunamis are relatively harmless to boats at a safe depth, which varies but is usually more than 180 feet, as they pass underneath. They only start to become dangerous as they approach shorelines, where the waves rise and become destructive. Ms Burrows added: 'We don't know anything about tsunamis because we are from the UK. We were thinking do we get on a ship or go to higher ground. 'But he reassured us we are in a safe place.' Speaking to Sky News, Ms Burrows said that 600 passengers were left stranded on Big Island in Hawaii. She added: 'The tour operator just messaged to say 600 people didn't get onto our ship. They were then told to find refuge at higher ground. So it was quite scary. 'The ship had to leave by a certain time to get to deep water because that is the safest place, apparently you wouldn't even notice the tsunami going underneath you when you are in deep water. 'We have moved to deeper water just outside the island, we were meant tot be going round to the other side of the island tomorrow, I think they are trying to stick to that plan but obviously we don't know until we know the extent of the waves that are going to hit these islands.' On the island residents have been evacuated to higher ground, with some tourists staying in their hotels on higher floors and watching from their balconies. Sharon, 66, from Essex, is currently staying on the eighth floor of a hotel on Waikiki Beach alongside her husband, two daughters and five grandchildren. She said: 'The hotel said don't evacuate, just get to floor four or above and stay put' 'We found out about the tsunami from our phones and a really loud alarm' 'We are definitely scared and at first I didn't know whether to stay put or literally run for the hills' 'We keep getting info over a speaker in the hotel saying stay put and go to floor four or higher' Holidaymakers in higher apartments have watched on following warnings of a tsunami 'I don't really feel safe, and I won't until we get all clear. It still hasn't hit this island yet' 'So far we have just wasted half a day of holiday by staying in the hotel' 'The grandchildren know what's happening but they are ok as we've reassured them it is all ok ' 'I haven't really noticed any weather changes yet' 'Hotel have said it's still not clear but I think people think it isn't going to happen and are wandering around again' Residents in Hawaii were forced to evacuate from coastal areas as the entire island chain braced for the impact to strike. Water was seen receding at around 7.40pm local time, or 1.40am EST. The first tsunami waves hit Hawaii at 8.20pm local time, 2.20am EST. Water levels were recorded above four feet in Haleiwa on Oahu's north shore, reaching five feet just minutes later and causing floods. Oahu Emergency Management warned residents: 'Tsunami waves are currently impacting Hawaii. Take action NOW!' The Governor said that all flights of Maui have been cancelled with around 200 people being sheltered at the airport. Locals were seen running to supermarkets to stock up on water and other essentials as Hawaii Governor Josh Green signed an emergency proclamation for the state. 'We pray that we won't lose any loved ones,' the governor said in a press conference as he warned the public to not 'go out until we give you the all clear.' He ordered residents to not call 911 unless there was an emergency. He added: 'Don't get on the road at all, unless you have to. Stay in and watch television.' 'We expect to be about two to three hours at least until we can call 'all clear'. So far though, at the moment, so good,' he said. 'We don't want anyone to let their guard down, we want to go another couple of hours. As the waves cycle smaller and smaller, that's how we'll know that we're ending this concern. 'Everything has been OK so far. We haven't seen a big wave. But when that water receded in Haleiwa and we saw some boats laying on dry rock and sand, that gave us pause. That doesn't happen for no reason.' Photos posted online also showed bumper-to-bumper traffic on a Honolulu highway as residents scrambled to get to higher ground. On Oahu, the US Army and Navy opened Kolekole Pass and sections of Schofield Barracks on Oahu to help with the evacuation efforts there as at least one critical traffic accident was reported. The National Guard is also prepared to help with any rescue efforts and Blackhawk helicopters have been deployed, but Green warned 'it is not likely we will recover you' if residents are swept up in the massive waves. Data from the US Geological Survey shows the quake reached a magnitude of 8.8 and struck about 84 miles east-southeast of Kamchatska, Russia at around 7.24pm EST - marking the sixth strongest earthquake ever. It was also believed to be the strongest to strike on the entire planet in 14 years, when a 9.1 megaquake hit northeast Japan and left 19,747 people either dead or missing. Oprah Winfrey opened her private road in Maui to help people evacuate, CNN reported. Her spokesperson said: 'As soon as we heard the tsunami warnings, we contacted local law enforcement and FEMA to ensure the road was opened.'

I moved to Spain to build a new life for myself - here's the biggest challenge I faced

A Brit who moved to Spain and built a new life for himself revealed the biggest challenge he experienced. Lee Thornley, 43, left his job as a barrister and relocated overseas in 2008 with the intention to learn Spanish. There are reportedly some 350,000 British people officially registered as living in Spain, with many attracted by the alluring weather and good food. 'I just thought, I want to change things, and I didn't have any kids and didn't have any mortgages, so I was like I'm just going to go to Spain and learn Spanish,' he told MailOnline Travel. Lee fell in love with the area that his language school was based in, Costa de la Luz, and the benefits he was experiencing from moving countries. 'I felt healthier, I felt happier,' he explained, revealing how he thought at the time that he 'never wanted to go back to London '. The Brit met his now ex-wife, who he shares two children with, and bought land in the area. They built a hotel that became luxury rural hideaway, Casa la Siesta. However, Lee's Spanish journey hasn't always been easy. He admitted one of the biggest challenges he faced was learning the language. 'Language – I think that's probably the biggest challenge you have,' Lee explained. 'You know, your ability to communicate, so getting a good grasp of the Spanish language was probably the first challenge to overcome.' It took Lee 12 months to become completely fluent. 'When you're very much immersed in it, and you have to, then you just do. There's no option. You just have to figure it out,' he said. Another challenge Lee faced was tackling the hotel project, which was a much larger task than he had worked on before. He added: '... I'd done housing projects, but on a much smaller scale, like a regular two bedroom house in York, or we did a house project in Spain as well. 'We had, we had some experience, but nothing like what the scale of the project ended up being. 'So, it was more kind of naivety that, in a positive way, meant that I was confident to go ahead and have a go at it. 'But for sure, once I started on building a much bigger project like that, you realise you've got a lot to learn pretty quickly.' From building the hotel, Lee developed a passion for interior design and went on to found his own tile business. Lee now splits his time between Yorkshire and Spain. He moved back to the UK with his family a few years after his first child was born. 'So when we had our first daughter, we lived out there full time until she was three,' he said. Being away from family and the children not having 'access to their grandparents and them being part of their growing up' was important to both Lee and his wife. 'So it was more family reasons I think, wanting the kids to kind of grow up around a wider family network,' he explained. However, the businessman intends to return to Spain full time in the future. 'Once the kids go off to uni, we'll definitely move back to Spain,' Lee said. As for his tips for those wanting to make the move and start a new life in Spain, Lee emphasises the importance of getting stuck into the local culture. 'It's just really important to kind of integrate yourself as much as possible before you necessarily go in with two feet,' he explained. Getting to know the local people and being seen 'as part of the community' is vital for settling down there. 'I think we did a good job at living out there, learning Spanish, contributing to local economy, making friends, and then after that, actually making that decision as to whether or not to stay,' Lee added. 'I think sometimes I hear people saying "well, we're going to leave our home in the UK because it's worth X and buy something cheaper in Spain, and our life's going to be better". 'And it doesn't always work out, and I don't really think it's a surprise you need to kind of do your do your kind of time on the ground and really understand it before you make that big decision as to whether or not you actually want to live there.'
