India: 6 dead in Haridwar temple stampede

The crush reportedly began at around 8.30 a.m. local time (0300 UTC) after a high-voltage electric wire fell on a temple path, triggering panic among the large group of devotees.
Officials also believe the crush could have been triggered by a rumor, the Times of India reported.
Haridwar police official Parmendra Dobhal told AFP news agency that six people had been killed and more than 10 were injured.
The Times of India put the number of injured at 34, citing local officials.
Vinay Shankar Pandey, a senior government official in Uttarakhand state, recalled how worshippers had scrambled for safety following the incident.
"The situation is now under control," Pandey told the Associated Press by phone from Haridwar. "But the panic led to tragic consequences."
Uttarakhand's chief minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, wrote on X that local police and other rescue teams had reached the spot and were engaged in relief and rescue operations.
The injured have been taken to the local hospital, Indian news agency ANI reported.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent his condolences to the victims and their families in a social media post.

India commissions INS Nistar to strengthen maritime safety infrastructure
Visakhapatnam: Built by Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), the ship represents the Navy's technological prowess and commitment to self-reliance. With its primary role in deep-sea diving and submarine rescue operations, INS Nistar is a strategic enabler, a life-saving sentinel, and a symbol of India's advancing maritime capability. The commissioning ceremony, held at the Eastern Naval Command base, was attended by senior naval leadership, defence officials, engineers, and shipyard workers whose efforts brought this vision to life.'Nistar', the first indigenously designed and constructed Diving Support Vessel, was delivered by Hindustan Shipyard Limited to the Indian Navy on July 8, 2025, at Visakhapatnam. The warship has been designed and built as per the classification rules of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS). According to an official statement, the ship is a testament to the Government of India's resolute focus on nation-building through self-reliance in defence production and unwavering focus on Aatmanirbharta. A total of 120 MSMEs have participated in the construction of this ambitious, unique and state-of-the-art vessel, achieving more than 80 per cent indigenous content. The ship is highly specialised and can undertake Deep-Sea Diving and Rescue Operations, a capability held by select Navies across the globe. The ship will also serve as the 'Mother Ship' for the Deep Submergence Rescue Vessel (DSRV), to rescue and evacuate personnel, in case of an emergency in a submarine underwater. The ship is equipped with a combination of Remotely Operated Vehicles to undertake Diver Monitoring and Salvage Operations up to a depth of 1000 m. In her earlier avatar, ex-Nistar was a submarine rescue vessel acquired by the Indian Navy from the former USSR in 1969 and commissioned in 1971. Over the course of her two decades of service, she made significant contributions to the Indian Navy's diving and submarine rescue operations. Air India flight's APU catches fire after landing at Delhi airport; all passengers safe
New Delhi [India]: An Air India flight operating from Hong Kong to Delhi on Tuesday suffered an auxiliary power unit (APU) fire shortly after the aircraft landed at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport. The APU is a small engine located typically at the tail of an aircraft. It provides power to essential systems when the main engines are off, such as during boarding, disembarkation, or while the aircraft is parked at the gate. According to the airline, the incident occurred while the aircraft was parked at the gate and passengers had begun to disembark. 'Flight AI 315, operating from Hong Kong to Delhi on 22 July 2025, experienced an auxiliary power unit (APU) fire shortly after it had landed and parked at the gate. The incident occurred while passengers had begun disembarking, and the APU was automatically shut down as per system design," an Air India spokesperson said in a statement. "There was some damage to the aircraft, however, passengers and crew members disembarked normally, and are safe. The aircraft has been grounded for further investigations and the regulator has been duly notified,' the statement read. No injuries were reported among the passengers or crew members. The aircraft remains grounded at Delhi pending a technical evaluation and inspection by regulatory authorities, it added.
