YVR warns of possible flight disruptions over the weekend amid Air Canada strike
Vancouver International Airport is warning air travellers about potential Air Canada flight cancellations this weekend, as the airline gears up for what could be a multi-day strike.
Air Canada said it will begin halting flights starting Friday to allow an orderly shutdown of operations before work faces a full stop come Saturday.
'YVR is aware that both 72-hour strike notice and 72-hour lock-out notice have been served as part of contract negotiations between Air Canada and (the Canadian Union of Public Employees) representing Air Canada flight attendants across the country,' YVR said in a statement released Wednesday morning.
Air Canada service could be disrupted as of 9:58 p.m. Friday, with schedules potentially adjusted as early as Thursday, the airline said.
While it continues to 'urge both parties to reach an agreement at the table,' YVR said it is preparing for potential impacts should a full stop take place, which will include increasing the number of terminal staff to help support affected passengers.
CUPE served its first strike notice to the Canadian airline early Wednesday morning, after the two sides could not agree to terms on a new collective bargaining agreement.
'Despite eight months of good faith negotiations that included the assistance of federal conciliators, and an offer to enter binding arbitration, Air Canada has been unable to reach a tentative agreement with the union,' Air Canada said in a statement posted to its website Wednesday.
Passengers travelling on Air Canada are advised to check the status of their flight online.

Chinese tariff on canola seed comes into force as farmers hope for resolution
David Reid lands his 1957 Helio Courier on a landing strip bordered by his canola crop on the family's farm near Cremona, Alta., Thursday, July 17, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jeff McIntosh REGINA — A Chinese tariff of nearly 76 per cent on Canadian canola seed is set to come into force today. The duty, announced Tuesday, has already caused the price of one of Canada's most valuable crops to fall, wiping out millions of dollars in its value. It comes a year after China launched an anti-dumping investigation into Canadian canola. The investigation was in response to Canada's 100 per cent tariff on Chinese electric vehicles, and the two countries have since hit each other with various levies. Canola farmers and Ottawa have rejected claims of dumping, arguing exporters have followed rules-based trade. Farmers and Prairie premiers have called on the federal government to resolve the issue by speaking constructively with Chinese officials. Some Air Canada flights to be cancelled today as clock ticks toward work stoppage
People walk near the Air Canada check-in area inside Terminal 1 of Toronto Pearson International Airport, in Mississauga, Ont., on Wednesday, Aug. 13 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Arlyn McAdorey Some Air Canada flights that were scheduled to take off today will be cancelled as the airline braces for a work stoppage this weekend. The union that represents around 10,000 Air Canada flight attendants is poised to strike just before 1 a.m. on Saturday, as the airline also plans to lock out those workers. Air Canada says it will begin cancelling flights today, with more disruptions Friday and a complete stoppage by Saturday if it doesn't reach a last-minute deal with the flight attendants' union. It says customers whose flights are cancelled will be eligible for a full refund, and it has also made arrangements with other Canadian and foreign carriers to provide alternative travel options 'to the extent possible.' Meanwhile, the airline says it has requested government-directed arbitration. The federal government has not indicated whether it will intervene in the dispute, as federal Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu said in a statement Tuesday that she encourages both parties 'to stay at the table until a deal is found.'
