Trackside buffet fuels race car drivers for Detroit Grand Prix

Detroit Grand Prix drivers and their crews spend hours at the track. So what do they eat?
Many go with food from Scheper Event Group, whose buffet-style mobile restaurant travels with different race series.
Kaitlin Scheper, who is overseeing Detroit's operation, said their 11-person crew is feeding 200-400 people for each meal at Detroit Christ Church, located along the race route. This is a small operation relative to some of the company's catering, where it feeds up to 1,500 people a meal, she said.
This is Scheper's second year working with their mobile kitchen set up in the church parking lot. Many times, Scheper sets up its dining area in a big tent, but the church provides indoor seating and relief from the elements.
The church can usually seat 120 comfortably, the church's associate for communications, Bethann Tesluk, said, but the Schepers crew can get teams in and out quickly throughout meal periods.
Scheper said the meal space can be a place for drivers and crews to catch a break from the track and pits as well as to catch up with and banter with former co-workers and opponents they've known for many years.

'It is a competition at the end of the day, but it's fun to see everybody come together, take a little lunch break and be chatting and joking and having a good time,' Scheper said.
What do they eat?
Schepers provides an array of foods, including salads, hot dogs, fried chicken, vegan options and more, but the driver-specific buffet is usually plain pasta or rice, a steamed vegetable and a simple meat, like chicken breast, Scheper said.
'This is a huge positive to the (Prix) series, just having this as an option for the teams because it's one less thing for the teams to have to worry about,' Scheper said. 'They don't have to necessarily worry about where I'm going to go get lunch for my crew when they're in the middle of a race, they know that there's an option on site.'
Schepers Event Group coordinates with the race officials, but drivers and their teams pay by meal, with a heads up in advance, if they plan to eat with Schepers.

Pato O'Ward sits second and Christian Lundgaard third in points, but they're more than two races' worth of max points behind Palou. Who makes a move in the points standings? Marcus Ericsson would have been 10th in points after crossing the finish line second in the Indianapolis 500, but he stands 20th after his car failed post-race tech inspection. He earned his lone podium finish in 2024 in Detroit, and with a similar performance this weekend, Ericsson makes up a lot of the ground he lost in the championship standings in Indy. Something you didn't see coming: At a track where he started on pole last year, but only finished 19th, Detroit seems like as good a track as any for Colton Herta to find some momentum. He sits just 9th in the championship standings with a single top-5 finish. However, the narrow streets of Detroit can be cruel, and somehow Herta and the No. 26 crew leave with a tough result unbecoming of the traditionally dominant street course program of Andretti Global. IndyCar to return to Detroit Grand Prix for at least 3 more years

DETROIT — The Detroit Grand Prix is coming back for 2026 and beyond. As confirmed by Penske Corp. vice president of community and government affairs Letty Azar, the Grand Prix has signed a three-year contract with the Detroit City Council, with an option for a fourth year. That should keep IndyCar's grand prix on the streets of Downtown Detroit through 2028 (and possibly 2029) on the current deal. In 2021, Detroit Grand Prix officials agreed to a contract with the Detroit City Council to hold the grand prix in downtown Detroit for three years starting in 2023. It marked a return to a downtown street course that the grand prix started with in 1982 before moving to Belle Isle for stops and starts between 1989 and 2022. One potential issue surrounding the future of the race is the uncertain fate of the Renaissance Center, which currently has plans to have two of its buildings demolished. Grand Prix president Bud Denker said the RenCen's potential deconstruction creates a situation that is still "TBD" for the Grand Prix. "That's still a little ways off, because a couple of things have to happen in 2027," Denker said, referring to Ford Field hosting the 2027 Final Four. According to Denker, that event will require hotel rooms provided by the Marriott hotel inside of the Renaissance Center to take place. "Nothing is going to be going away here from what we understand until past 2027," he said. Denker also poured cold water on the possibility of extending the track, currently the shortest street course on the IndyCar circuit at under 1.7 miles. To extend it to the east would bring it to a residential neighborhood, while extending it to the west would bring it closer to the Huntington Center, which would leave little to no room for safe turnout areas on the fastest stretch of the course. When asked if it was possible to make the course wider, Denker said no, saying the blocks that hold the base of the walls are already on top of the street curbs. Denker highlighted the growth of the 2025 race, saying that the Grand Prix outsold its total 2024 ticket volume by Friday, May 30 — two days before the race.
