New No. 1! Texas commit Dia Bell now top QB in 2026 recruiting class

USA Today14-07-2025
There's a new No. 1 QB in the 2026 recruiting class and it is none other than Texas Longhorns commit Dia Bell. The probable Arch Manning heir apparent has moved up the Rivals.com rankings thanks to a stellar summer highlighted by being named MVP of the Elite 11 camp.
Rivals has gone through a complete re-ranking of the top 300 2026 prospects. The Fort Lauderdale, FL signal caller is now the No. 2 player overall in class behind Miami Hurricanes offensive tackle commit Jackson Cantwell. Bell jumped Georgia Bulldogs QB commit Jared Curtis in the QB Rankings.
'From an arm talent perspective, Texas commit Dia Bell is as good as anyone in the 2026 cycle. He's the definition of a natural thrower. His ability to manipulate the football and throw consistently catchable footballs from multiple arm angles is a treat to watch. He can dice up defenses on Friday evenings and makes special throws. He's someone that has tons of upside especially as he develops and fills out his frame down the line.' -- Rivals scout Keegan Pope
The five-star has been committed to Texas for over a year. He becomes the fourth Longhorns QB commit since the mid 1990s to be ranked as either the No. 1 or No. 2 overall prospect in the nation. The others were Chris Simms (1999), Vince Young (2002) and Arch Manning (2023).
Bell, who was named the Florida Gatorade Player of the Year, had his 2024 season cut short due to a serious leg injury in Florida's state playoffs. But his performance at Elite 11 should put to rest any fears that the injury would impact Bell's longterm outlook.
During his junior year at American Heritage High School, the 6-foot-2 QB threw for 2,597 yards and 29 touchdowns, completing 70.6% of his passes.

'Freak' Longhorns freshman already looks like an NFL Player

Before this week, Texas Longhorns freshman Justus Terry was best known for being a longtime Georgia lean than took a bigger NIL package to play for Texas. The five-star defensive tackle made 247Sports' 2025 Freaks List, showcasing his exceptional athleticism and versatility. Terry has shown up to camp ripped. Listed at 6-foot-5, 268 pounds, he easily looks like he's gained 15 pounds of muscle. Terry has a frame that should accommodate more muscle as he builds his body further. He could even grow a little taller. Longhorns DE coach LaAllan Clark said that Terry be rotated into the defensive lineup to create mismatches at the line of scrimmage. Terry has competed in track and field throwing events and played basketball at the prep level, demonstrating his multifaceted talent. Per MaxPreps, Terry amassed 78 tackles, including 6.5 for loss, 13 sacks, two pass breakups, and two forced fumbles. Terry also made an impact in 2022, recording 38 tackles, four sacks, two fumble recoveries, and one interception over 10 games. Follow us on X/Twitter at @LonghornsWire. Rangers add more rotation help, acquire Phil Maton from Cardinals

A day after trading Ryan Helsley and Steven Matz, the St. Louis Cardinals have completed a hat trick. Right-handed reliever Phil Maton is headed to the Texas Rangers, who had just traded for Arizona Diamondbacks starter Merrill Kelly. In exchange, the Cardinals will receive 22-year-old LHP Mason Molina — whom the Rangers acquired in a January trade with the Brewers — and 23-year-old RHP Skylar Hales, their fourth-round pick in the 2023 draft. Advertisement Maton, 32, was the lone free agent the Cardinals signed in the offseason. He quickly emerged as a vital key in the bullpen. St. Louis used Maton as its primary setup man for Helsley. In 40 appearances, Maton posted a 2.35 ERA and 48 strikeouts. A spin-rate specialist, Maton certainly won't overpower with velo (his average fastball velocity is under 90 miles per hour). But he's carved up opposing hitters all year by missing bats. Maton has registered a 30 percent strikeout rate and a hard-hit rate (28.9 percent) that ranks in the 99th percentile in the league while giving up just one home run this season. Maton represents the ideal deadline rental for contending clubs. He's a durable veteran who has pitched in three postseasons dating back to 2021. He's also owed just $700,000 — making him highly attractive from a cost standpoint. With Helsley traded to the New York Mets and Matz dealt to the Red Sox, the Cardinals are now without their top three relievers. Manager Oli Marmol has options, but none of them have experience. Right-handers Kyle Leahy, Riley O'Brien and Gordon Graceffo look to be the logical fits for leverage innings, along with lefty JoJo Romero. There is no clear-cut candidate for the closer role, but Graceffo seems to be the early favorite. For Texas, Maton is the third and (presumably, unless another trade is announced post-deadline) final move. In addition to Kelly, Texas also added left-handed reliever Danny Coulombe from the Twins. While the offense had been the team's biggest deficiency this year, the bats came to life in July, scoring 138 runs going into Thursday night's game — that's second most in the league, trailing only the Blue Jays, and with Jake Burger expected to return from the IL soon, that production gave the Rangers the freedom to address the bullpen. Advertisement And — despite Kelly's status as a starter — all three moves are expected to be bullpen-boosting moves. The Rangers' rotation already boasts Nathan Eovaldi, Jacob deGrom, Jack Leiter, Kumar Rocker and Patrick Corbin, all of whom have been excellent this year. The addition of Kelly will allow them to move one of those pitchers (likely one of the latter two) to the bullpen to fill a long-relief role that has been shaky this year.

Nuggets' Nikola Jokić's new $94 million, 39% three-point shooter could lead to next ring

Three-time MVP Nikola Jokić has been an absolute gem for the Denver Nuggets, bringing them the franchise's first championship two years ago. Ever since the second-round pick emerged as the player he is today, the Nuggets' front office has tried its best to build a competitive roster that fits around his playing style. This offseason may have been their best, with some new acquisitions that could make all the difference en route to capturing their second championship. Most noticeably, they traded away Michael Porter Jr. and got back 6'8 sharpshooter Cam Johnson, who was part of the Brooklyn Nets. Last season, Johnson averaged 18.8 points per game, the most in a season for his career. He also shot 57.8% from the field last year, an incredible number for a player who relies mostly on jump shots. Most impressively, this is when he was creating most of his shots himself, something he had never had to do that he will share the court with Jokić, the floor should open up much more, and while he may not average as many points, he should see a lot more uncontested jumpers. Although they had to give up a first-round pick on top of Porter Jr., Johnson should prove he was worth it. His usage will be low, but he thrived in that type of situation with the Phoenix Suns when they took the Milwaukee Bucks to six games in the 2021 NBA championship. Johnson could be the x-factor that Denver needs to get over the hump and conquer the Western Conference.
