South Korea, Vietnam to join hands for energy, nuclear power cooperation
The countries' industry ministries signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop joint projects in the renewable energy sector, such as solar power, wind power and energy storage systems, according to Seoul's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

. and Vietnam's state-owned energy firm Petrovietnam (PVN) also signed an MOU to foster a workforce for the nuclear power industry in the Southeast Asian nation, which plans to build four nuclear reactors by 2035.
The MOUs were signed following a summit between South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Vietnam's top leader To Lam in Seoul.
At the summit, the two leaders agreed to deepen their countries' Comprehensive Strategic Partnership established three years ago, covering areas such as trade, security, science and technology, and people-to-people exchanges, while vowing to step up efforts to boost their bilateral trade volume to $150 billion by 2030.
Ahead of the summit, Korean Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan also held a bilateral meeting with his Vietnamese counterpart, Nguyen Hong Dien, and agreed to expand supply chain cooperation, according to Kim's office.
Under the agreement, Seoul will launch a five-year official development assistance (ODA) programme to establish a critical mineral supply chain technology cooperation center in Vietnam, Yonhap news agency reported.
The Korean government will invest a combined 16.6 billion won ($12 million) to procure equipment for smelting critical minerals in Vietnam, provide technical guidance and support human resource development.
Vietnam currently holds the world's sixth-largest rare earth reserve, the third-largest reserve of bauxite, the fourth-largest tungsten reserve and the seventh-largest graphite reserve.

Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Seoul celebrated the 79th Independence Day. Zostel charts global expansion, in talks to bring in strategic investors
India's largest chain of backpackers' hostels Zostel is looking to bring in strategic investors as it expands its presence in India as well as global markets, including the US and Southeast Asia. Zo World, the parent company of Zostel, is targeting revenues of ₹1,500 crore at gross level for 2025-26 (FY26) at a margin of 25 per cent, more than 7x of ₹200 crore it clocked in FY25, while restructuring the segments it operates in, newly appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Aviral Gupta told Business Standard in an exclusive interaction. 'We're in talks with private equity players outside India as well as inside. There's interest from the Gulf as well as from the US markets. We're just looking for the right partner to come on board from a larger long-term perspective,' he said in the virtual interaction. While increasing its push into international markets, the company is consolidating its presence in four segments — Zostel, Zo House, Zo Trips and Zo Villas — to streamline operations and provide greater choice to the growing number of travellers who are now backpacking to destinations in India than before. 'The 100 (locations)-plus Zostel is going to expand internationally. Our first in the US with 186 beds will come up in Brooklyn, New York, in the first quarter (Q1) of 2026. Southeast Asian launches are coming up starting next month. We're targeting 10,000 beds across all markets within the next 12-18 months — 3,500 beds from overseas and 5,000 beds within India,' he added. The company's second vertical Zo Trips, launched 18 months ago, will house curated international trips, which will be expanded to Europe and the US over the next two years. Japan was added to this segment last month, taking the existing set to more than a dozen countries. The company's third vertical will be Zo Villas, a new segment where travellers will get large villas with rentals ranging between ₹8,500 and ₹50,000 per night. Zo Villas will target families and long-stay travellers for vacation rentals, a breakaway from its core backpacker target audience, but it will also adopt a different company structure. Starting from September, with two properties, in Coorg and Pushkar, the company is targeting 300 properties by the end of 18 months, with an average of 75-80 per cent occupancy.

Putin hails North Korean troops as ‘heroic' in letter to Kim Jong-un
Russian President Vladimir Putin hailed North Korean troops sent to fight in Ukraine as 'heroic' in a letter to leader Kim Jong Un, North Korean state media reported Friday (August 15, 2025). In a letter marking the anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese rule, Mr. Putin recalled how Soviet Red Army units and North Korean forces fought together to end Japan's colonial occupation. 'The bonds of militant friendship, goodwill and mutual aid which were consolidated in the days of the war long ago remain solid and reliable even today,' Mr. Putin said in a letter revealed by North Korean state media. 'This was fully proved by the heroic participation of the DPRK soldiers in liberating the territory of Kursk Region from the Ukrainian occupationists,' he said, according to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). 'The Russian people will keep forever the memories of their bravery and self-sacrifice,' he said. Mr. Putin added that the two countries would continue to 'act jointly and effectively (to) defend their sovereignty and make a significant contribution to establishing a just and multi-polarised world order'. KCNA later published Mr. Kim's reply to Mr. Putin in which the North Korean leader praised the two countries' relationship as 'the stablest comradeship and a comprehensive strategic companionship'. Russia and North Korea have been forging increasingly closer ties, including signing a mutual defence pact last year when Mr. Putin visited the reclusive state. In April, North Korea confirmed for the first time that it had deployed a contingent of its soldiers to the front line in Ukraine, alongside Russian troops. South Korean and Western intelligence agencies have said Pyongyang sent more than 10,000 soldiers to Russia's Kursk region in 2024, along with artillery shells, missiles and long-range rocket systems. Around 600 North Korean soldiers have been killed and thousands more wounded fighting for Russia, Seoul has said. 'Excellent soldiers' The letter from Mr. Putin came alongside a visit by a Russian delegation to Pyongyang, where the speaker of the Duma thanked Kim for sending 'excellent soldiers' to Ukraine, KCNA said. Vyacheslav Volodin's delegation arrived on Thursday (August 14, 2025) and was received by a military honour guard for a visit marking 'the 80th anniversary of Korea's liberation'. Mr. Kim said the delegation's visit would promote the 'development of the DPRK-Russia relations'. He also said he had a phone call with Mr. Putin two days ago, agreeing to expanded bilateral cooperation and 'closer contact and communication between the state leaderships'. The call came three days ahead of Friday's (August 15, 2025) summit between Mr. Putin and Mr. Trump, the first between a sitting U.S. and Russian president since 2021, as Mr. Trump seeks to broker an end to Russia's more than three-year war in Ukraine.
