Brian Kerr hails Roland Idowu's qualities after shining in first friendly win
By Kyle Gunn
St Mirren assistant boss Brian Kerr was full of praise for Roland Idowu after his double against Dumbarton.
The Saints stepped up their preparations for the new season with a 4-0 victory away to the Sons on Saturday.
Mikael Mandron headed the Paisley side in front in the first half after an inviting ball in from the left from the Scottish League One player of the year last season, Evan Mooney.
In the second half, Idowu – who made his loan deal from EFL League Two side Shrewsbury Town permanent this summer – scored a brace in what was a performance that excited the fans.
The Irishman joined the Paisley side on a two-year deal after a successful loan last campaign. James Scott, who will be eager to be more involved this season after having limited minutes last term, closed off the game with the fourth and final goal.
Buddies assistant manager Brian Kerr was delighted to have the team back out on the pitch in what is the first of three pre-season games ahead of the Premier Sports Cup opener against Arbroath on July 12.
And Kerr has heaped praise on Idowu for his performance as he explains why they are okay with the Irishman losing the ball on occasions.
'We know what you get from him. He's a winger type,' he told Express Sport.
'He's going to go and try and beat men time after time. Even today, he loses the ball on occasions, but when you get the quality that he has on the other side and in the two goals, then you've got to accept that sometimes he's going to lose the ball.
'We know that we can accept him losing the ball four or five times if he's able to fire two balls into the back of the net the way he did today.
'That's what we know, and the boys know it as well. Sometimes, you've got to accept match winners.
'They know, the boys, the maverick types that Roland tends to be, and the other boys will do the job getting him the ball and hopefully he produces that magic.'
New boys Liam Donnelly and Jayden Richardson featured from the start of Saturday's game, with new goalkeeper Ryan Mullen not being used.
Richard King is yet to touch down in Scotland after being on international duty with Jamaica at the Concacaf Gold Cup. Kerr went on to add his thoughts on the strong win in West Dunbartonshire.
He said: 'It was a good exercise, which is the most important bit. We knew the boys were all going to get their 45 minutes in so it was important that we saw the work rate more than anything else.
'There was some great quality, there were some great goals and bits and pieces, but most importantly it was to get some minutes in the legs.'
Stephen Robinson's men flew out to Spain yesterday to further ramp up their fitness.

Russell Martin discusses Rangers postponing St Mirren game
The Ibrox side face Viktoria Plzen in a crucial Champions League qualifier second leg and if victorious, they could delay the Paisley trip. The St Mirren clash, scheduled for August 24, would sit between the two-legged play-off against either Red Bull Salzburg or Club Brugge. A new SPFL rule allows clubs to delay one league game if it falls just before a European tie, to aid preparation. It was expected Rangers would use this for the Buddies game, to boost their chances of making the Champions League. However, Rangers manager, Russell Martin, indicated this might not happen. In a press briefing, Martin said: "Well, no decision's been made either way. "I think the plan has always been to play the game unless, depending on what happened on Tuesday, if we get through this and all that stuff. "So it's been flexible. "But our league table this early on will not dictate what we do with a game, honestly. "At the minute I expect we'll play it and if that changes because of whatever reason we feel it will help us... we have to win this game tomorrow first as well. "So we'll see." Rangers must first focus on winning the match against Viktoria Plzen before making any decisions regarding the St Mirren fixture.

It's being reported by Tuttosport that Serie A giants Juventus have been interested in the Denmark international for some time and now want to make a concrete bid for the 24-year-old. The Bianconeri are reportedly set to "guarantee him a five-year contract" worth around "£2.6million a year". However, they will need to sell players such as Douglas Luiz, Weston McKennie and Fabio Miretti to raise funds to make the move happen. Brighton are asking for £26m, which is slightly more than the £25m they paid Celtic for him last year. The Hoops made a substantial profit on O'Riley after paying MK Dons just £1.5m for him in January 2022. O'Riley made a huge impact in Scottish football, scoring 27 goals in more than a 100 games for the Hoops. As well as winning the Scottish Premiership three times, he helped the club win a treble in the 2022-2023. He was also Celtic Players' player of the year the following season. Just hours after completing his move from Celtic to Brighton he suffered a serious ankle injury on his debut against Crawley Town. Despite the setback, he would go on to make 23 appearances that season, scoring twice and assisting three goals. But he was left frustrated at being played out of position. Also the 24-year-old isn't getting regular game time and has been attracting attention from other Serie A giants including Napoli and Roma. Awkward Matt O'Riley moment has fans convinced 'he thinks he's still at Celtic' Meanwhile, on Saturday O'Riley revealed he still has a soft spot for Celtic and follows the team's results. He told the Celtic Way: "Even though I don't post that much on social media, I'm still watching every single game and trying to keep tabs on them. "I'm still in contact with people. "It's hard in football to keep contact with everybody because it moves so fast and things change, but I did make some good friends up there, and I'm still in contact with a lot of staff at Celtic, which has been nice." A former Hearts striker is the subject of intense interest from clubs in Scotland and England as the summer transfer window enters its final three weeks. The Daily Record have reported St Johnstone have rejected an offer from English League One club Peterborough United for former Hearts forward Mackenzie Kirk. The Northern Ireland youth international is the son of former Hearts and Dunfermline Athletic frontman Andy Kirk and made just a solitary senior appearance during his time at Tynecastle despite becoming a regular goalscorer in the Hearts B setup. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad After spending time out on loan at Hamilton Academical during the second half of the 2023/24 season before joining the Saints last summer. After scoring 14 goals in 49 appearances during his first season at McDiarmid Park, Kirk has reportedly attracting major interest from elsewhere and it now appears Peterborough have been unsuccessful with an opening offer for the 21-year-old frontman. The report claims the Posh are not the only club to have submitted a bid for Kirk this summer after they stated Bristol Rovers and a current Premiership club both had bids rejected earlier in the close-season. Meanwhile, a separate article from The Courier has claimed the Saints are 'unlikely' to allow Kirk to join second tier rivals Dunfermline but also states two Premiership clubs have lodged an interest in his services following the rejected offers from Bristol Rovers and Peterborough. Dons boss admits to 'difficult' transfer window Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin. | SNS Group It has been a challenging start to the Premiership season for Aberdeen after Jimmy Thelin's side suffered back-to-back 2-0 defeats against Hearts and Celtic in their opening two games of the league campaign. That comes on the back of what has been a hectic summer transfer window so far as the Dons have completed deals for the likes of Portsmouth striker Kusini Yengi, Western Sydney winger Nicolas Milanovic and Tottenham Hotspur defender Alfie Dorrington. Further additions are being worked on ahead of the final three weeks of the window and Thelin has stressed he is not frustrated by the transfer activity and will remain hard at work to further boost his squad. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad He told BBC Sport: "Everybody is so aligned with what we want to do. It has to be the right player, not just a player, and we know what we are trying to do. We have to find the profile and how we build the squad. "If you work in this business, it is not frustration. You know it is a difficult market, everybody is trying to do the best we can do and we are trying to nail the things we want to happen. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't, then you move on and you always have an optimistic mindset and try to do the best you can do. I think in the window, you can't control exactly what happens, but we have a lot of people who are working hard to always try to improve the squad."
