North author redefines African narrative through ink and action

The Citizen8 hours ago

A Pretoria writer is encouraging his community to embrace their individual African stories and journeys to share collective progress, claim their identity and live a life filled with hope.
Using his book, Voices of the African Gamechangers, as a platform for thinkers, he hopes the youth can use it as a beacon to showcase what's possible for every young person in areas such as Mabopane.
Nkagare Makhudu said he was not in the spirit of just writing books, but is rewriting perceptions, reclaiming identity, and redefining Africa's story, one page at a time.
Makhudu described himself as a man deeply rooted in values, community, and identity.
'I have always believed in the power of stories. Not just stories we are told, but stories we tell ourselves, and those we choose to tell the world,' he said.
Makhudu found his voice in writing.
Voices of the African Gamechangers is Makhudu's first official book, published last month, after a draft of the book was initially self-published in August 2023.
Though the book is a collaborative project, Makhudu's chapter reveals personal experiences of overcoming doubt, navigating professional spaces, and finding a deeper sense of purpose.
The book offers a selection of essays and reflections by dynamic African thinkers, entrepreneurs, and change agents reshaping their communities and the world.
'Writing this chapter allowed me to reflect deeply on my journey, not just professionally, but personally.
'It's easy to be defined by titles and positions, but my story is really about resilience, community, and the courage to create a different reality,' he said.
'I want young people from Mabopane, Itsoseng, Bethanie and other places to see themselves in my journey. Not because it's exceptional, but because it's possible.'
His message to aspiring leaders is simple: Start where you are.
'You don't need money to make an impact. You need vision, consistency, and a heart for people.'
Looking ahead, Makhudu is more focused on legacy than accolades. He is passionate about succession planning and is already mentoring a new generation of changemakers.
'We cannot afford to be the last generation of torchbearers. We must pass it on, not when we retire, but now.'
Born in the village of Bethanie in North West, he was raised in Itsoseng near Mahikeng, and later rooted in Mabopane before settling in Mountain View.
His journey is a reflection of the South African spirit being grounded in struggle, lifted by purpose, and driven by hope.
Growing up in communities where opportunity was scarce and hope often suspended, he understands the structural and psychological barriers faced by many young Africans.
'Too many of us have internalised the idea that success looks like something Western, something imported.
'But the African story is full of innovation, intelligence, and inspiration. We just need to give it a platform,' said Makhudu.
His work with the Morongwa Foundation focusing on youth development, leadership training, and entrepreneurship particularly among marginalised communities, is an expression of this philosophy.
'I want young people to see themselves as capable, valuable, and powerful. And sometimes, all it takes is one voice, one story, to unlock that potential.
'There are more stories to tell, mine, yours or ours,' he said.

'Lekker': Inside Siya Kolisi's first Father's Day as a single dad

Siya Kolisi has celebrated his first Father's Day as a single dad, following his separation from his former wife, Rachel Kolisi. The father of two – who lives in Durban – has two younger siblings, Liyema and Liphelo, who stay with his ex in Cape Town. In an endearing Instagram post, Siya Kolisi shared a look at his Father's Day weekend. In it, the Springboks captain and his pal Cheslin Kolbe posed for pics with their brood of children. Other pics showed Siya out and about with his children Nick and Keziah, as well as younger sister Liphelo. 'Lekker weekend', he captioned the snaps. As a teen, Siya lived with his grandmother after his mother, Phakama, died. Sometime later, he would later track down his siblings to a foster care home, where he would adopt them alongside his then-wife Rachel Kolisi. Siya Kolisi – who admits to never previously having a relationship with his father – has also mentioned how his mother suffered gender-based violence at the hands of her male partners. In the post, the 33-year-old revealed his hopes of having a relationship with the man who did not raise him. He shared: 'I had a much-needed deep conversation with my father. 'I'm not sure about the relationship between time and healing, but I now know that in time, we can grow the courage we need in order to take the first steps towards healing. 'The relationship with this man is important to me. And I'm glad for the opportunity and strength to keep fighting for it.' Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher finalise divorce

Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher have officially ended their marriage after 14 years. They finalised their divorce more than a year after announcing their split. The pair shared identical statements on Instagram on Friday. They confirmed the news and emphasising their ongoing commitment to co-parenting their three children. The couple wrote, 'Our divorce has now been finalised. We are proud of all we've achieved together and, continuing our great respect for each other, according Tribune. Sacha and I remain friends and committed to co-parenting our wonderful children. We ask for the media to continue to respect our children's privacy'. This respectful tone highlights their desire to keep their family matters private, a stance that will resonate with audiences who value family privacy and dignity. Sacha Baron Cohen, 53, and Isla Fisher, 49, first met in Sydney in 2001 and married in 2010. They share two daughters and a son. They announced their separation in April 2024, revealing they had filed for divorce in 2023. The couple likened their relationship to a 'long tennis match lasting over twenty years,' now finally coming to an end. The divorce settlement reportedly amounts to $75 million, which converts to roughly R 1.5 billion. This reflected the significant assets they accumulated during their time together. Despite the large sum, sources say the process has been amicable and smooth, with both parties focusing on their children's wellbeing. An insider told Page Six in February that 'all divorces have their challenges, but things have gone pretty smoothly with Isla and Sacha,' highlighting their mutual respect and dedication to parenting. In a candid interview with The Sunday Times , Fisher described the divorce as 'the most difficult thing I've been through' but also spoke about the personal growth it brought. 'I never imagined my family being separated, but we are committed and loving parents,' she said. As they move forward separately, both remain dedicated to their children's happiness and privacy.
