Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Cucumbers Spreads to 18 States

An outbreak of Salmonella in cucumbers, reportedly originating in Florida, has spread to 18 states, according to The New York Times.
Target is one of a handful of companies that have issued recalls on the product. Cases of Salmonella have affected people in the Midwest and the East Coast. At this time, 16 people have been hospitalized.
The New York Times writes, "Health officials have linked the outbreak to Bedner Growers, a cucumber grower based in Boynton Beach, Fla., that sells to wholesale distributors and directly to consumers. Potentially contaminated cucumbers, distributed between April 29 and May 19, were sold widely to stores and restaurants, the C.D.C. said."
A large portion of those hospitalized are believed to have been on cruise ships departing from Florida the week before falling ill.
According to the Mayo Clinic, Salmonella is often accompanied by symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. Infections can become fatal if they spread beyond the intestines.
In a statement, the C.D.C. said, "The recalled cucumbers should no longer be for sale," adding that consumers should inquire whether the cucumbers used were from Bedner Growers or Fresh Start Produce sales. 'If you have cucumbers at home and can't tell where they are from, throw them away,' the agency said.
In a separate statement, Bedner Growers clarified that the recall was voluntary and issued in an "abundance of caution and out of deep respect for the public health."
'Safety first,' the statement added. 'By taking these steps, we want to assure the public that we want to continue to earn your trust.'Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Cucumbers Spreads to 18 States first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 2, 2025

RFK Jr. Appoints High-Profile COVID Shot Skeptic To Vaccine Committee

Robert Malone, one of the eight new members named by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Wednesday to serve on the committee tasked with advising the U.S. government on vaccines, has a long track record of sharing conspiracy theories about life-saving COVID shots. Malone, a former mRNA researcher who also runs a blog on Substack with over 357,000 subscribers that he has used to spread COVID misinformation, gained prominence spreading baseless claims about the pandemic, including in an interview on Joe Rogan's podcast in December 2021. During the three-hour sitdown, Malone falsely suggested that former President Joe Biden lied about being vaccinated for COVID while receiving his booster on live TV, and claimed that Israel, where over two-thirds of the population had received the vaccine, had a higher mortality rate than Gaza and the West Bank, which had lower vaccination rates, despite figures pointing to the contrary, according to The New York Times. He also drew a comparison between the country's pandemic policies and medical experiments in Nazi Germany, and accused Dr. Anthony Fauci of hypnotizing a third of the U.S. population into believing his recommendations on COVID. Over 270 scientists, medical professionals, professors and science communicators wrote to Spotify, the company hosting Rogan's podcast, calling on the company to moderate misinformation on the platform, citing the Malone interview as an example of damaging public trust in scientific research. Malone's account on X, formerly Twitter, was also suspended shortly before that interview after he posted a video on the platform questioning the safety of the Pfizer vaccine. It has since been restored. Separately, Malone has also baselessly suggested that COVID vaccines are 'not working' and could damage children's brains, hearts and immune system, and also cause a form of AIDS, according to The Associated Press, another false claim. Besides, Malone, who has a medical degree from Northwestern University, claims he is the inventor of mRNA vaccines — a statement that is widely disputed by scientists, including some who worked closely with him, according to the Times. Kennedy, a fellow prominent vaccine skeptic, on Monday penned an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal announcing he was removing all members of the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices, which is tasked with assessing the safety and efficacy of vaccines to curb the spread of diseases. 'A clean sweep is needed to re-establish public confidence in vaccine science,' Kennedy wrote. Two days later, he announced eight new members for the panel, including Malone, a move he claimed would help restore the public's faith in vaccines. 'I will do my best to serve with unbiased objectivity and rigor,' Malone said in response to his new assignment. On CDC vaccine panel, RFK Jr. makes a bad situation much worse

Four months into his tenure as the secretary of health and human services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has approached vaccine policy in a predictably dangerous way. The longtime anti-vaccine conspiracy theorist has not only narrowed vaccine eligibility standards and changed official recommendations, Kennedy and his team have also halted potentially lifesaving vaccine research. It was against this backdrop that the unqualified Cabinet secretary made matters worse this week, ousting the members of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's independent vaccine advisory committee. As NBC News reported, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) 'consists of medical and public health experts — including pediatricians, epidemiologists and geriatricians — who make recommendations to the CDC about who should get certain vaccines, including the schedule for childhood vaccinations.' After Kennedy removed the qualified experts — reportedly for political reasons — Dr. Sean O'Leary, an infectious disease expert with the American Academy of Pediatrics, told The New York Times that the move should be seen as 'an unmitigated public health disaster.' Soon after, the health secretary tried to reassure the public that he'd replace the respected scientists with 'highly credentialed' successors. You can probably guess what happened next. The New York Times reported that Kennedy announced several new additions to the ACIP panel, 'including four who have spoken out against vaccination in some way.' From the article: By far the most contentious pick, and the one with the highest profile, is Dr. Robert Malone. He played an early role in mRNA research and has claimed to be the inventor of the technology. He became a right-wing star after a 2021 appearance on 'The Joe Rogan Experience' that exposed both him and Mr. Rogan to criticism that they had spread misinformation. Dr. Malone was a vocal critic of the Biden administration's Covid response. The Times quoted one infectious disease expert who noted that Malone 'has a well-documented history of promoting conspiracy theories and unproven treatment like ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine for Covid-19.' The Wall Street Journal noted that Kennedy also tapped Vicky Pebsworth, a nurse with a Ph.D. in public health, 'who is a board member of the National Vaccine Information Center, an organization that advocates against vaccines.' The same new list also included Dr. Retsef Levi, who wrote via social media in 2023, 'The evidence is mounting and indisputable that mRNA vaccines cause serious harm including death, especially among young people.' Kennedy removed 17 members of the ACIP panel on Monday, and he's now announced eight replacements. As for the other nine, watch this space. This article was originally published on

Air India flight AI171 was heading from Ahmedabad in western India to London when it "was involved in an accident after take-off" at 1:38 p.m. local time, the airline said on social media. The plane was "carrying 242 passengers and crew members on board the Boeing 787-8 aircraft," Air India said. "Of these, 169 are Indian nationals, 53 are British nationals, 1 Canadian national and 7 Portuguese nationals," the airline added. Video has since emerged of the seconds just before the crash and show the plane leaving the airport before quickly descending and then slamming into the ground. A large explosion was also seen. Faiz Ahmed Kidwai, the director general of the directorate of civil aviation, told the Associated Press that the jet crashed into a residential area called Meghani Nagar right after taking off. According to The New York Times, the plane hit a medical college. The cause is under investigation. The total number of dead and wounded has not been confirmed. Ahmedabad's commissioner, G.S. Malik, initially said "it appears there are no survivors in the plane crash," according to the AP, but later told News18, a local outlet, that he "was misquoted." Reports have also emerged of at least one passenger who lived after the crash and Air India said in a statement from its CEO that some passengers had been hospitalized with injuries. Malik told The New York Times that 204 bodies were recovered at the scene. "It is heartbreaking beyond words," the Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi, said in a statement. "In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it. Have been in touch with ministers and authorities who are working to assist those affected," he added.
