Heavy Rains Prompt Precautionary Measures in Mahabubnagar Region: District Administration on High Alert
On Saturday, the Special Officer convened a video conference with district collectors, additional collectors, and officials from various relevant departments to review the preparedness and strategies to effectively handle the impact of the inclement weather.
During the meeting, Mr. G. Ravi emphasized the need for heightened surveillance at tanks, ponds, and reservoirs due to the continuous downpour. He instructed officials to monitor these water bodies closely to prevent any untoward incidents. He also advised rerouting people away from dangerously overflowing streams and rivulets by setting up clear signage, barricades, and flex boards.
Further, the officer stressed taking immediate action to prevent seasonal diseases, avoid electrical hazards, and ensure the safety of drinking water by preventing contamination. He also suggested that, if necessary, a special control room be established at the Collectorate for round-the-clock coordination.
Collector B.M. Santosh Provides District Status Update
District Collector B.M. Santosh responded by noting that, so far, the rainfall in the district has remained within normal limits and no hazardous situations have arisen. However, as a precaution, special teams have been deployed across all mandals to initiate preventive actions.
He informed that steps are being taken to identify and address risks posed by old and dilapidated buildings, including houses, schools, and colleges, which may be vulnerable during heavy rains. Temporary repairs are being undertaken by engineering teams from the Roads & Buildings and Panchayat Raj departments to fix rain-damaged roads to avoid public inconvenience.
Special attention is being given to monitoring the water flow in Krishna and Tungabhadra river catchment areas. Additionally, efforts are underway to prevent drinking water contamination through prompt repair of pipeline leakages and chlorination of water supplies.
Sanitation drives are actively being conducted in villages and municipalities to curb the spread of seasonal illnesses. "Friday as Sanitation Day" initiatives are being observed, ensuring that open drains are cleaned regularly and stagnant water is removed from roads to prevent mosquito breeding.
Collector Santosh highlighted the administration's readiness to tackle vector-borne diseases like dengue, malaria, and chikungunya by initiating immediate and proactive medical interventions. He added that local health centers and primary health facilities are being routinely inspected, and essential medicines are being stocked to meet public health needs.
No Shortage of Agricultural Inputs or Ration Supplies
On the agricultural front, the Collector confirmed that farmers in the district are not facing any shortages. Adequate stocks of urea and fertilizers are available, with about 5,000 metric tonnes of urea currently in supply. Distribution is being monitored to ensure timely availability to all farmers.
Regarding public distribution, he reported that 6,052 new ration cards have already been approved and distributed during village sabhas. Additionally, around 29,000 new names have been added to the ration database, ensuring wider access to food security provisions.
The police department, too, has been placed on alert to respond quickly to any emergencies. As rainfall remains within expected limits, the district administration assured that the situation is under control and there is no cause for alarm.

Govt UP school in dilapidated condition
Dhenkanal: The woes of students and teachers of Police Line Government UP School in Dhenkanal begin with the arrival of monsoon. The school is located just 100 metres away from the Collectorate. Rainy season is the most difficult period for students and teachers as rain water leaking through asbestos roofs of the school building causes classrooms to flood creating disruptive learning conditions. The Police Line Government UP School was established in 1952. Many of the students who have passed out of this school are well placed in different sectors. The government has implemented many schemes in the last 30 years like District Primary Education Programme, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, but such schemes seem to have evaded this school upsetting the parents and the people. The school has classes from 1 to 7 and the students have achieved success at various competitions. But there is shortage of classrooms. Most of the students belong to backward communities. Collector Somesh Kumar Upadhyay said he will look into the problems of the school soon. Dhenkanal Block Education Officer Dibya Prakash Pradhan said he had joined his post recently and will visit the school after July 10 as HSC supplementary examination is going on. Funds are sanctioned but survey of schools is not done properly by the authorities concerned, alleged School Management Committee members.

Jogulamba Gadwal District Gears Up for Monsoon Challenges with Proactive Disaster Management Plan
Gadwal: To effectively face potential natural disasters in the district, all departments must work in coordination and take advance precautionary measures, said District Collector B.M. Santhosh. On Tuesday, a coordination meeting was held with officials at the IDOC meeting hall to discuss the Disaster Management Action Plan. The Collector emphasized that the administration should not merely react after disasters occur, but rather take proactive measures in advance. He noted that since the district is located between the Krishna and Tungabhadra rivers, heightened vigilance is necessary. While no major disasters have occurred in the past decade, he recalled that floods in 2009 led to crop damage. He warned that, due to early monsoons beginning in June, there is a high possibility of heavy rainfall this year. As part of the precautionary measures, the Collector instructed the formation of disaster management committees at mandal and village levels under the chairmanship of Tahsildars, similar to the district-level committee. The Additional Collector (Revenue) has been appointed as the district nodal officer for disaster management. Tahsildars are to conduct mandal-level meetings and form effective teams for quick response. Officials from irrigation, education, health, roads and buildings, animal husbandry, and fisheries departments were briefed on responsibilities within their jurisdictions. The next three months are crucial, and all departments must be prepared to respond immediately to any emerging issues. Special attention must be given to villages along riverbanks. Vulnerable houses and school buildings in dilapidated condition must be identified beforehand, and if necessary, arrangements must be made to shift residents to safer locations. The Irrigation Department was instructed to immediately respond to issues at tanks and ponds. Panchayat Raj and R&B engineers must monitor roads and undertake necessary repair works without delay. Emergency transport facilities should be arranged for pregnant women in flood-prone areas. Fever surveys should be conducted in villages, and essential medicines made readily available. To prevent the spread of dengue, ASHA workers and ANMs should actively provide healthcare services. Under the supervision of the Panchayat Raj Department, sanitation efforts must be stepped up to prevent water stagnation on roads. The Electricity Department was directed to ensure uninterrupted power supply and take preventive measures against hazards from submerged electric poles and hanging wires. The Fisheries Department was advised to hold meetings with fishermen and keep boats and trained swimmers (rescue divers) ready to respond during floods. All departments must perform their duties with responsibility under the provisions of the Disaster Management Act. Officials must remain accessible and alert at all times over the next two months. Inter-departmental coordination is key to reducing the impact of disasters, and past experiences should guide preparedness measures. Speaking on the occasion, District Superintendent of Police (SP) Mr. Srinivas Rao stressed the importance of understanding the Disaster Management Act, 2005. He noted that while there are no major industries in the district that pose geo-environmental risks, changing climatic patterns and rains can still trigger disasters. The SP warned that houses in dilapidated conditions are at risk of collapsing during heavy rains, necessitating immediate responses. He emphasized the need for control rooms at district and mandal levels. Departments like Revenue, Police, Irrigation, Fire, and Electricity must stay alert 24/7. He also mentioned that fishermen with swimming expertise (rescue divers) should be kept ready in case of increased water flow due to heavy rains. The police department, he said, will deploy skilled young officers and work in coordination with all other departments to ensure effective disaster response. The meeting was attended by Additional Collectors Lakshmi Narayana and Narsinga Rao, RDO Alivelu, officials from various departments, Tahsildars, MPDOs, and Municipal Commissioners.
