‘Deport now, appeal later': India added to UK's fast-track deportation list for foreign criminals
The UK home office announced on Sunday that the scheme's scope will nearly triple — from eight countries to 23. The move is part of a broader crackdown on rising migration and delays in the removal of offenders.
Foreign nationals from these countries will be deported once sentenced, with any appeals heard remotely via video technology from overseas.
Explaining the rationale behind the decision, the country's home secretary Yvette Cooper said, 'For far too long, foreign criminals have been exploiting our immigration system, remaining in the UK for months or even years while their appeals drag on. That has to end,' reported news agency PTI.
She added, 'Those who commit crimes in our country cannot be allowed to manipulate the system, which is why we are restoring control and sending a clear message that our laws must be respected and will be enforced.'
Who all are on the list
Previously, the list included Finland, Nigeria, Estonia, Albania, Belize, Mauritius, Tanzania and Kosovo. The expanded list now adds India, Angola, Australia, Botswana, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Guyana, Indonesia, Kenya, Latvia, Lebanon, Malaysia, Uganda and Zambia.
The UK government said discussions are ongoing with other nations to join the scheme. 'We are leading diplomatic efforts to increase the number of countries where foreign criminals can be swiftly returned, and if they want to appeal, they can do so safely from their home country,' said UK foreign secretary David Lammy.
According to the home office, the new approach will reduce the burden on British taxpayers, as offenders from these countries previously remained in the UK long after completing their prison sentences.
Around 5,200 foreign nationals have been deported since July 2024 — a 14 per cent rise over the previous year.
Meanwhile, official data shows foreign offenders make up about 12 per cent of the UK's prison population, with annual prison costs averaging GBP 54,000 per inmate.

The technology security initiative (TSI), signed last year, would lead to increased collaboration in areas including telecom security which would unlock investment across emerging technologies, critical minerals, AI, biotech advanced materials and semiconductors, he stated. 'We believe that this agreement will have a significant impact on our economies and will support job creation, technology transfer, and innovation. With its potential to double bilateral trade by 2030, this agreement is expected to have a lasting impact on both economies,' said Prashant Gokhale, president, BCIC.

Rajnath thanks Modi for Metro expansion

Appreciating the cabinet decision, Singh termed the East-West corridor extension of Lucknow Metro's Phase 1-B as a boon for the daily commuters who face congestion in the old city area. Centre clears mega hydro project in Arunachal
Guwahati: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday approved an investment of over Rs 8,000 crore for the construction of the Tato-II Hydro Electric Project (HEP) in Shi Yomi district of Arunachal Pradesh. The project, with an installed capacity of 700 MW (4 x 175 MW), is expected to generate over 2,700 million units (MU) of energy annually. The project is slated for completion within 72 months and will be implemented through a joint venture company between the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd. (NEEPCO) and the Arunachal Pradesh govt. To support the development, the centre will provide Rs 458.79 crore as budgetary support for enabling infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and transmission lines. Additionally, Rs 436.13 crore will be extended as central financial assistance towards the equity share of the state government. Local Benefits and Infrastructure Boost The state will receive 12% free power from the project and an additional 1% contribution towards the Local Area Development Fund (LADF).
